Two and a half hours plus of just one person and a guitar and a sincere true honest genuine display that I was lucky enough to be a part of. In-fucking-credible. I was speechless. Can't remember everything but here goes. Patty opens, it's a short set, she was good, can't stop to dwell, Jewel's performance awaits. She comes out and reads two of the best poems I have ever heard, the imagery and wording floors me, the one about Infatuation was so true and real and relate-to-able that I was like just wow, anyway, then she starts singing. We start with Don't and 1,000 Miles and that is a god indication of where the night would go, two tear-jerkers back to back. Then Angel Needs a Ride, a personal favorite, good story telling, again most of the stories throughout the night I can't remember, but they were all honest and genuine, especially the little jokes where Jewel would bring up something weird that she does and no one responds and then she goes, well I don't either. Best story(funny) of the night was the Dolores apology/reference to Sinead and Alannis. Best serious stories come later. Then you get songs like My Fish Family, His Pleasure is My Pain, Louisa and her Blue Guitar( really good), Studies in Love 12, Tough Girl, Fragile Flame, Cold Song, All the Animals, Tiny Love Spaces(also awesome), and a couple of other songs like that-all acoustic, just Jewel, pouring her heart out for us in tragic yet comically intersperdsed bliss. She did Face of Love with her mom Lenedra and it was incredible, one of the absolute highest points. Then, 'Nedra sings a lullabye called Little Bird, a cute Disney-esque tail that woos the audience but in the last line of the song the poor bird dies, more evidence of things to come and of the show on a whole. I'll explain momentarily. Band came out for Fading Away, Fragile Heart, Satelite, and Carnivore(raucous applause, floored everybody, damn it rocked out!), but Jewel digressed, just as it seemed like she was really going to tear into the band stuff and try to rip the roof off the place she settle down for more solo quiet stuff that ended with songs like Moon Over Austin and Innocence Maintained. At this point the concert is almost two hours old and I'm guessing she's gonna end soon, at this point she has played well over twenty songs and only one off the album-truly staying true to the obscure songs that she doesn't get to play elsewhere-she knows this is a hardcore audience. No WWSYS on the horizon, prob'ly no Chime Bells either I' thinkin'. The encores however is when this show went from exceptional to truly and amazingly great(a word that I unlike most people almost never use) and it was great. Nikos was incredible, so real and honest, the PS I love you, your sister Jewel lines at the end seemed to bring the biggest silence over the room of the night, afterward there was a noticeable two second pause as everyone just sat there in shock and amazmement before applauding. Then came the heroin story that preceeds Amen, which has always been one of her best songs live and at Jewelstock it was even better than usual, she confined herself as much as she could until she got to the lines about Where are my angels, Wheres my golden one into the lines about children being beaten and born and it was as if she was pleading with god during those lines, gritting her teeth and trying to comprehend such injustices. Then she finishes with the Halleluja and she looks completely drained, says goodbye and leaves. She has ended shows with this song before but not unless she has played something more positive before hand, WWSYS, Chime Bells etc. so part of me thinks the show is over but soon I realize it is not and that a second encore will ensue. She comes back for You're So Small and then Sometimes it be That Way, and I'm thinking OK, now she's gonna finally break out stuff like I'm Sensitive, RaceCar Driver, God's Gift to Women, Rocker Girl, or Foolish Games to set the audience into a frenzy, but I look at my watch and realize it's so late and begin thinking that she's really done now and that there's only one song left, she is talking to people in the middle of the audience about Race Car Driver and I figure that that will wrap the show, then some guy called out for Jessica and that was what did it for her, she began thinking, put her head down as if rifling through her songbook in her head, and I know what she's gonna end with. Deep Water, has to be, this is the song that is really all of Jewel's songs rolled into one, it's her mantra song, her message, who she is, her statement, it's so obvious. Our standard of living somehow got stuck on survive, sacrifice, fighting through it all to succeed and do what we love, through the abstraction of society and the imposed cruelty of the world. This is the song that will contradict all the depressing stuff and solemn solo acoustic songs we have been hearing all night, after all is said and done, all the previous songs are the deep water that society tries to drown us in. This is gonna be the show ender. Wrong. She ends withe her most downbeat, Nihilistic, violent song in the entire repetoire, a song that people remember as being so good yet so dark and harshly realistic when they first hear it that they are shocked. And I was shocked to hear it here ending the set. It was amazing, she took us all in her hand throughout the entire show and led us here, giving us just a little hope and light and positivity in Sometimes it be That Way that the effect of it being followed by this awesome rendition of Nicotine Love is that much more magnified and affecting. After two and a half hours good does not triumph over evil. This is a story of a woman warped by her experiences, not one who overcomes them but succumbs. Jewel closed her fist over the audience an squeezed and we felt it. I knew that the houselights were coming up, there would be no more encores, no more songs. This is how it ends, not a silver lining, a mysterious cloud-I was blown away. I didn't hang around after the show for an autograph or a picture, being there was enough, this was not a positive experience, not optimism but realism. If I ever do meet Jewel(I've spoken to her from afar in congratulatory tones or needy ones like direct song requests, but I've never been within an arms' length. If I ever am lucky enough to meet this incredibly deep and real and honest and beautiful person I want it to be on an interpersonal level, not as a begging obsessive fan as part of a line of other people just like, metaphorically drooling over her. I am not putting down those of you who stuck around for a glimpse of her, I'm just saying it's not my style. Hopefully she doesn't become popular and her next album, though I'm sure it will be even more radio-friendly than Pieces of You(which was basically not at all except for WWSYS, not that it was a sell out song or anything), does not sell with really big numbers, because this is how I will remember Jewel, this is the way should be seen, the venue and audience respect will never be like that again if gets big and famous. I want to see her like this again. Seeing her in small bars and clubs is close but the audience is not quite as good-too many drunks and people who are there for reasons other than Jewel. But a different Jewel comes out for those shows, like the one I saw at the Tradewinds that was also incredible, but lacked the emotional raw power of Jewelstock. I am seeing her open for Neil Young at MSG on the 19th and am not going to see her, would be there just for Neil anyway, but know that he performance there will seem lackluster in comparison to small venues, her intimacy and real-ness will be dwarfed by the size of the building and the inattentiveness of an audience that doens't really care(remember the HFS-tival, she doesn't like being disrespected and we the true fans suffer because she isn't going to go all out if she knows the majority of people in the building aren't listening). I guess that's about all, she was again, awesome, moving, and impressive. If you know of songs I forgot to mention, please post them, if you have anything to respond to, reply to this post to the digest as well. Again thanks to Akira and Mike and 'Nedra and Hiranya and of course Miss Jewel herself, I experienced something unforgettable. Later, Sean Hooks "That thunder in your heart at night When you're kneeling in the dark It says you're never gonna leave her But there's this angel in her eyes that tells such desperate lies And all you wanna do is believe her And tonight you'll try just one more time To leave it all behind and to break on through Oh she can take you but if she wants to break you She's gonna find out that ain't so easy to do And no matter where you sleep tonight or how far you run Oh, she's the one" - -Bruce Springsteen Well, watching Jewel from the dark, I felt the thunder in my heart, she was an angel, I wanted to believer her, but she did break me, broke us all really, and no matter where we sleep or where we are she made an impression on us. And god knows that to us, the true fans, she will always be-the one and only-Jewel. ------------------------------ From: Hiranya@aol.com Date: Sun, 21 Jul 1996 16:37:58 -0400 Subject: Re: another JS mini-report -she mentioned getting on-line through a friend a couple times and checking in on us..said her favorite was the cigarette discussion ..."It's a lollipop!!!" Hi everyone. Skinny Pete, here. Just wanted to post a few things since many people have been talking about the official video of Jewelstock. Me and my crew (Jason Krol, Rob Ashegh, and Dave Kollupy - all are either not list members or lurkers I'm not saying which is which) used 3 cameras, BOTH nights, totalling 12 video tapes, combining over 14 hours of footage. For those of you that were there know that the first night we had camera 2 in the center of the theater in the balcony (some really great shots), but even better I got the ok from Lenedra on Friday to get up in front of the stage so I really got some incredible shots for the second show (extreme close up during yodeling and talking on Racecar driver comes to mind - plus a cool shot of the Harris brothers being goofy during Friday's show AND a GREAT shot of her dropping her pick, I just happened to be zoomed in on her fingers on the guitar - couldn't have been rehearsed better). So, Jewel said on Friday that she watched one of the tapes of Thursday nights show and really liked it. She said she wanted to take a look at the other tapes after the Friday night show and that Lenedra will call me or e-mail me about what they want done next. Lenedra told me that Jewel was very enthusiastic about the video (did I spell enthusiastic rite?) We still have to lay down the audio and edit the show but it looks like we MAY have two final shows edited instead of one combined tape. But I can't really say anything until I here from Lenedra about what she wants done. I didn't even want to post this note to get people's hopes up but I thought I should say something about it since most people didn't even know I was doing this and I didn't want to keep people in the dark. When I hear something I'll let you know. By the way, if anyone brought a camcorder along for the trip and got some cool footage of all us Angels having the time of our live, please let me know I'd like to use some of that footage for the final product. On another note, in case anyone was wondering Jewel was incredible (but I we all knew that). She was very friendly and went out of her way to say hi and introduce herself to me and my crew (as if we had no idea who she was ;-) . We were having trouble with audio so while she was on stage rehearsing, I shooted out to her and asked if we could just do another sound check to see if we were getting an audio feed into the cameras, she yelled out "sure" grabbed the mic and jokingly babbled something completely incoherent into the microphone, it was adorable. But anyway, I'll post something to the list once I know what's going on, I could go on and on about stories but I won't (Akira's cigar that I REALLY wanted, Mike's strange obsession with 1 potato 2 potato, my crew refusing to go out and get shampoo for me on Friday morning forcing me to use 4 gallons of gel which didn't work at all, John the sound man and me in a bitter argument about audio cables, me kicking Lisa Schiller's ass at Ms Pacman, an unknown girl who yelled out "is THAT SkinnyPete?" and then snapped a couple pictures of me before taking off (still don't know who you were.), me and my crew almost getting thrown out of a 24hour grocery store for being loud and obnoxious, ME GETTING A SPEEDING TICKET IN KINGSTON (I was going with the flow of traffic, just ask Lisa), and my personal favorite - me scaring away my maid at the hotel when she called my room and I answered "HOMICIDE! Det. Skinny Pete speaking" - she never came to our door the whole time.) Wow, I guess I just DID go on and on, nevermind. Later. - Skinny Pete P.S. I love you. Your sister, Jewel. P.P.S. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions about the video. Thanks for a good time everyone. ;-) ------------------------------ From: Ddhaoc@aol.com Date: Sun, 21 Jul 1996 17:19:29 -0400 Subject: Post-JewelStock Thoughts #2 ***Desperate Angels coming down from JewelStock-induced emotional peaks wrote: >I am listening to yet another boot. Braintree is about an hour from me, and I promise I'd find a way to scan the picture in and get it on the net...really...--Rachel< "Fade Away" (the KMart bathroom song) is a KILLER. It should be released as a single right after "Carnivore" and "Satelite!" It lets Jewel lose the guitar and put heart and soul into her vocals, and has a great hook to it. Guys, I don't think there is a KMart in Braintree. A call to directory assistance confirms this. There is a KMart "job development" listing for Braintree, but NO retail store! The closest ones are Dorchester or Brockton. But towns around here run into each other, so chalk this one up to a local KMart and a good dose of "poetic license"! ***Liz needs a week of camping, cause she wrote: >Maybe by then I will have a bat that says "Everyday Angels" and whack anyone who talks when our lovely Jewel is belting her heart out.< Another confirmation by yours truly! Jewel specifically requested that all EveryDay Angels come to her Neil Young dates and carry bats that say "EveryDay Angels." We should supposedly hit anyone who talks during her set with them. I understand the importance of supporting Jewel, but I have a few problems with this: 1) First, bats can't talk. This means we all have to learn ventriloquism. Okay, THAT makes sense. 2) Bats carry rabies, and will make annoying screeching sounds during Jewel's set. This is potentially even worse than the jerks talking. Now, if we shove the bats up the jerks' *sses, it would muffle the bats AND distract the jerks (that's what it would do to ME, anyway). 3) The press will OVERREACT again, and say negative things about Jewel, calling her that "batty little yodel-honey from Alaska" and such. How about if we just carry clubs and sticks and leave the bats in the bat cave? Maybe Jewel record for us the Apocolypse Now theme song (you know, "Death from Above") as we swoop down on the jabbering fools? Wow! A version with T-bone on bass and Jewel scat-singing...cool. It's got my vote. Unless specifically requested by list group petition, I'll post my memoirs of JS in a day or so. Fiction ain't easy to write, you know. A true democratic spirit, if you ask me! >My mom loved the concert, by the way. For those who don't know, it was her first time seeing OR HEARING Jewel. We were both blown away by Patty - her cover of "Crazy" was awesome.< Tell your Mom she should bring you along to the next concert as well! Incidentally, I heard Jewel is playing Farm Aid. If Willie Nelson is there, she should move heaven and earth to duet with him on "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground." DID YOU GET THAT HIRANYA? (From the Honeysuckle Rose movie soundtrack.) >...as soon as I passed the mountain, there was THE MOST BEAUTIFUL rainbow I've ever seen. It looked like it was only about 10 feet away and I could see it from end to end. I pulled over and took a few pictures but I doubt they will show the true splendor. What a perfect way to end JewelStock! Dennis - I'll send you the pic's as soon as they're developed.< Please do. I saw a similar rainbow in every face at JewelStock! - -- Dennis (where have my Angels gone?) Harris ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #384 ***************************
