I hope you guys and gals don't chastise me for this, but I must admit that I haven't listened to Jewel for about 2 weeks now. Just yesterday I went to pop in Rare Angels and didn't even hear the first note before I quickly changed my mind and turned it off. I've been purposely limiting my Jewel intake recently; I don't want to be sick of her before the show. I expect that my Jewel-free mind will make her performance extra special... like listening to her for the first time all over again. (I suppose that it would also have a little something to do with the fact that many Jewel songs -- especially 'Near You Always' -- remind me of my recently broken heart. *sigh* Yes, pity me.) Great post, but I am not a Jewelstockaholic. I can handle it. I've always been able to handle it. I've never felt out of control about Jewelstock or the Alaska State Fair cancellation ( we were this close"->" to buying our tickets, for four to Alaska) and I am not bitter. I hold no malice to the lucky angels who get to see her. I do not have an addictive personality nor am I obsessive. Jewel is not all I live for. I spend hours reading these posts because it relaxes me. It is a way for me to escape the stress of everyday. Not that I need to escape. I listen to Jewel and follow the list because I like to. I don't need to turn my computer on everyday and read these posts I just do. I don't get up at 2:00 in the morning to see if there are any new posts every night. Only occasionally. Do I need help? ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 23:12:32 -0400 Subject: 89X Alaska Report Hi Liz, Nikos & all, I did some digging about those Jewel-slagging comments you heard on 89X. It was on "the Dish", a music news feature heard at 6pm with DJs Cristina and Vince. Cristina reported on the Alaska press release we all read, essentially paraphrasing it by saying "some people in Alaska think she's a 'bitch' for cancelling". Vince apparently provided a counterpoint and they went back & forth. That's the way that feature usually goes. Cristina told me no, SHE wasn't calling Jewel a bitch, and kind of laughed at the response. She pointed out sometimes people only hear half of what is being said on the radio. I didn't hear it, so I can't comment further. For what it's worth, I know Vince is a big Jewel supporter. He came to 89X from San Diego where he worked with Mike Halloran, the Music Director who first put Jewel on San Diego's 91X before POY was even released. Mike and Vince are good friends, and as a matter I've heard Vince on the air a few times talking about a trip he's taking next month to Alaska, where he's staying at the Jewel family-owned Bed & Breakfast. So guys, I think the segment you heard was a little dry wit that you just didn't pick up on. 89X is actually very Jewel-sensitive.
