I wanted to let everyone know that she is currently touring with October Project as their opening act. She was not advertised for the show that I saw a few weeks back in Minneapolis and I'm assuming that she's with them for the whole tour. I got that impression anyway. I must admit I wasn't real impressed (Sorry Alan, we usually agree!). As far as people doing the same type of thing, I much prefer Patty Griffin or Jonatha Brooke and the Story. Jane Kelly doesn't have a lot of energy on stage and none of her lyrics blew me away either. I'm sure that part of it was the contrast with October Project who were amazing. They do the 10,000 Maniacs/Innocence Mission sort of thing; they really rocked the place that night. If the October Project tour comes to your town (in San Francisco on 10/9, by the way), check them out. I would be interested in other peoples' feedback on Jane Kelly Williams. Alan and I usually have pretty similar tastes and I'm wondering if I missed something. If I did, please let me know! By the way, anyone know when Patty Griffin's CD is due to be released on A&M? I hear it's amazing. For those of you who don't think you know who Patty Griffin is, she's that amazing voice on Ellis Paul's CDs (e.g., Conversation With A Ghost). She also had a cut on the Legacy II CD (I Write the Book) and is part of the Boston s/s crowd. Peace, Scott Russell ScottRuss@aol.com scott@sma-inc.com Somerville Theatre - Ellis Paul & Friends - October 7th. 1995=20 Ellis Paul celebrated the re-release of his cd, "Stories" on the Philo/Rounder label by doing a big, hometown show at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, Mass. Opening for Ellis was new A&M recording artist Patty Griffin, who has often done backup vocals for Ellis on both of his recordings. Appearing onstage wearing jeans painted with 60's mod-style flowers, and a pretty yet powerful bluesy voice, Patty immediately took hold of the audience of Ellis followers. Her standout number, the simply titled "Shells," spoke to the violence perpetrated on the innocent children of Bosnia. It's a moving song, and one that is hard to shake from memory.=20 Roberta Schwartz-- rschwartz@oeb.harvard.edu=20 Topic No. 6=20 Date: Sat, 18 Nov 1995 15:52:30 -0500 Sender: Cynthia Courtney ccourt@world.std.com Subject: Patty Griffin Scott Russell recently asked when Patty Griffin's CD on A&M was due to be released. I just saw Patty perform the other evening at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA, and she said it would be out in March, 1996, title is Living with Ghosts. To expand on Scott's description of Patty a bit...I have seen Patty twice in the past couple of months - - once opening for Ellis Paul at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA, and again a few nights ago at Passim. And I was completely blown away both times. This woman is a major, MAJOR talent. She's got it all - masterful songwriting skills (some of her lyrics are so poignant, they take your breath away), gorgeous voice (large range, all kinds of colors/emotions - anger, tenderness, "smokiness"), and consummate musicianship. It was thrilling to be sitting just a few yards away knowing that if there's any justice in the music biz, she's going to be big star soon (and then I'll be sitting half a mile away :-( ) I'm not sure she necessarily reminds me of anyone else - she's unique. (Bonnie Raitt a little bit perhaps? not really, just in the kind of bluesy/smoky style of some her songs...) Favorite songs (at least of the ones I've heard): Poor Man's House, Shells, (You) Change. Run to your record store in March when this CD comes out - you will not be disappointed. The usual disclaimers apply - I'm just a fan. Cindy Courtney ccourt@world.std.com Patty Griffin, Living With Ghosts, A&M.=20 Oftentimes, contemporary folk singers offer elaborately produced recordings of their work only to take their songs on the road with only a guitar, finding that the intimate focus on words, voice and melody penetrates the soul of the listener to a far greater degree. Patty Griffith has successfully captured that 'up close and personal' quality in the studio. With a voice that possesses some of the smoothness of Shawn Colvin and some of the alternative edginess of Alanis Morrisette, Patty Griffith confidently offers her personal best.=20 Singer/songwriter Patty Griffin also has a knack for writing songs that sound familiar. Her major label d=E9but, Living with Ghosts, was recorded solo in houses in Boston and Nashville, but it's not really a folk or country album. Rather, it's a stripped-down rock album without the rhythmic clutter, =E0 la Bruce Springsteen's recent The Ghost of Tom Joad. Though most of Griffin's songs are grabbers, at this point she's a more mature writer than singer. Sometimes she gets overly passionate, when understatement would better serve the stark, confessional imagery in her lyrics.=20 Curiously, Griffin is the youngest of seven children, a young divorc=E9e, and lived for a time in the South. Welch, on the other hand, is a California native with a past affinity for Camper Van Beethoven and the Pixies. Somehow, it seems they've switched pasts.=20 By Steven Stolder Robb and Fuzzy the purple bear=20 w/ 12' Godzilla & Thun-dar the little Kitty [aka Tricky] A cat has 32 muscles in each ear -- its a fact ------------------------------ From: Michael Szabo Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 00:36:03 -0400 Subject: Re: vball at Pinecrest,SPAM At 07:49 PM 7/14/96 -0700, you wrote: >Sinjin' on my team. On to the picture....I haven't heard anything from the powers that be, but I am going to go ahead with this. I will be sending it away before I leave to go to Jewelstock and it should be ready for me when I come back. At that time I will start sending out replies to people who have inquired about it. I will also include a "picture" of the photo with the e-mail. Again good luck getting to JS and can't wait to have fun......
