Jewel brought us here but it is all of the little things that we bring that make this list what it is. I misunderstood the idea of the news list thinking that it would fall under the heading of REC.Music.Jewel but if it is a list that deals only with jewel related appearances, album/single releases, & like minded things then I think if we could arrange it then that would help solve problems for some people. I know that I would subscribe to it as well continue with this list. ps how does this sound if you don't like a post of mine then dont waste everyone else's time by replying to the list. Reply to me personall. Because if you waste time replying to a non jewel related post of mine than you are doing the same thing that you are accusing me of. pss everyone reading this that is going to jewel stock I wish you all a goodtime ________________ Email CStotes_WarpCon@juno.com ------------------------------ From: Stirfry101@aol.com Date: Sat, 13 Jul 1996 12:04:14 -0400 Subject: Me, bitter ? Once this is done, the page would need to be hacked into and the picture defaced. Sufficed to say most of them were traumatic (hmmm, maybe why they did not sell in the first place??) when I came across a rather funny one. The front of the card says: The 12th Step. Then there is this cartoon of a guy falling head first through the air next to a cartoon of a building with people watching him fall through their office windows. I was on the floor laughing, although the friend I was with didn't quite get it. I deemed this very appropriate to my current life sitsuation (*nothing* to do with Jewelstock of course, >:( ) so I bought the card, hung it on my bedroom wall and plan to stare at it all night this Thursday. And Friday too if I damn well please. If any of you on this list *really* love me (big ol' subtle hint to my girlfriend who is going) you will get Jewel to say hi to me and I'll be able to hear it on the tape that will be recorded. They would hit both lists, we're talking about filtering out the part that makes people unsubscribe, that's all. I mean we would have only about 15 posts this year so far on the other list if my memory is correct- when she had a magazine article, leno, late night, frisbee, etc.<< If there have only been 15 items so far this year, what's the point? And if news is that slow, someone will simply post non-news items to fill the void. Anyone who just wants the superficial, Reader's Digest version of the "world of Jewel" (frisbee, House of Style, Leno) might be better off listening to MTV news or some other "best of/passing mention" infotainment show. It seems people unsubscribe from this list due to the summer (college accounts), can't go to JewelStock induced depression and the cornball comments we try to pass off as humor. But if there are eight people in the world who prefer empty news digests, I hope they find each other. Myself, I learn more about Jewel through the eyes of fellow Angels. Was it WHFS? Were they speaking as if they truly meant it, or were they being quasi-fascetious (don't use words you cain't spell, Paul). Radio dj's, especially the HFS airstaph, are known brigands who say things because they are funny and not because they mean it. If you listen to the Radio Angels tape, you hear Aq and Rob Timm (or was it Bob Waugh) joking WITH Jewel about her tardiness at the studios and having trouble with traffic and just generally kidding around with her. Now they didn't call her a bitch, but they did rag on her a bit. And of course they do get a little 'meaner' when the artist is not with them face to face. I just wonder if they called her a bitch in a very cold and serious manner or in a kidding manner as I do to my close friends here at college (I also call them bastards). Is Ken Winchenback going to Jewelstock? because, for Karl Audette's information, Ken is from NH and he even has an email address with the same ending (nh.ultranet.com). I don't know, just a thought. Hey piglet and fuzzy, do you just want me to tape the Seattle show onto a blank and bring it to Jewelstock and you can give me money or another boot in exchange. You still haven't re-responded about the tree. And did all of my leaves get their copies? mIKEY the schoon wrote: Everyone is just way too uptight. TO BORROW FROM A GREAT PHILOSPHER, IF YOU STUCK A LUMP OF COAL UP ME BUM, YOU WOULD NOT GET A DIAMOND IN TWO WEEKS! Hee hee. Oh, and I don't have a personality to drain away. I am basically a personality parasite that leeches existing qualities from those around me. Right now I am absorbing the characteristics of my kitten who is sleeping on my lap. mIKEY also wrote: Well, my blowtorch has turned whisper, the flame slowly creeping back into it's canister. No one is in charge of this "community" we call a list, and I think separating any part of it would be like removing a limb. No News List and no chat list, pal. Just the LIST. Just Everyday Angels. me: if the flame crept back into the canister, wouldn't the cannister explode? kinda like a bullet going back into the barrel (or going into the barrel of another gun as that gun is being fired). And I agree that no one moderates the list (not even the great Wasilko 'cause he's got other lists to handle and that's a lot of mail. Am I right, Jeff?). But many people have opinions. I think we strayed from the idea that dave was looking at in the news list. When someone else mentioned the usenet group idea (which was not part and parcel to the news list idea) some people thought that the news list was the usenet group idea. I believe that what was wanted by dave and some others (not me, but I do encourage it for those who just want the news) was a thing that people could subscribe to if they wanted that would send out a bulletin or message of new news and updates regarding Jewel whenever that kinda info was ever announced. As I said before, I subscribe to the Heather Nova news list, partially because I don't want to have to deal with 40 more messages a day, and get irregular updates of tour info (still waiting for her to come back to the US), recording info, releases, and web page updates. While it is pretty cut and dry, the person who writes it up does inject a little humanity into it. I haven't gotten an update in quite a while since Heather is working a new stuff. This wouldn't mean splitting up the Everyday Angels into factions, it just provides an opportunity for those who can't handle or don't want to handle all the various posts (for whatever reason) that go through the list to get the essential Jewel info with a minimal expenditure of time and effort. And it would allow the not-so-die-hard fans to casually get updates without committing alot of time to email (I know that it takes me 3-4 hours to get through my email everyday. Then again, I am on three lists that generates around 100-150 messages a day total. And I am happy being on the News list for Heather since I am not the die hard fan.) great gravy this is a long post. about AESTHETE99's comments on finding something and being scared about it getting into the public's hands: I think I've written about this a couple times over time and so I'll spare you people the long version. But I know how you feel. But you can never own anything unless it is of and from you and you keep it locked away inside yourself, you know? I've felt the same way that you have about a lot of things, especially in music. And being a former collector of baseball cards and comic books (I consider myself a comic book reader now, not a collector), I can tell you that lots of collectors are looking for the next "hot" thing, the next fad, trying to discover the trend that will pay off in great dividends. They do this so that they can get something at a low price and gloat when it multiplies in value later and show how cool they are (kinda like stocks and bonds). I don't know why humans are like this. We are protective of what we find to be cool, we don't want to be seen as band-wagon jumpers, but often, when we do discover the new, we jump-start the bandwagon. I have been and sometimes am still this way and I hate myself for it. Maybe it's just an inferiority complex thing on my part. Maybe my dog ate my homework. ANyways, I think that Jewel is beyond the point of worrying about her being popular. She has been big for a couple months, as far as I can tell. But I am still ired by people who I feel are slow to catch on to her. And I am moving away from the worrying about keeping a group as a best kept secret now. I think that part of it is because I'm in charge of booking acts here at college and I have to worry about attracting as many college students as possible so I realize that not as many people actually like the same stuff that anyone else, let alone me, likes. Another reason is that I am moving away from music that carries the stigma of being "alternative" and the whole idea of "we don't want to be popular but we still want to be popular" which I think encourages the fans to become overly protective of the music. The music I listen to, hell, I'd be happy if lots of people liked and appreciated it. Then I could book the acts I want here with a clear conscience instead of considering them and then wondering if I'd be the only student in the room to watch them. That's why I'm happy to be on the ecto list (Happy Rhodes) and the fte list (Sarah McLachlan) because the people nurture each other to appreciate good music in the area that I like (women vocalists) and everybody wants to share their new buys and finds. And a lot of the artists I like are liked by the people on those lists, so I can have a common bond. ANd if you think that it's bad with the current "alternative" or "modern" rock that might as well be called top 40, the indie scene is even worse. But that's aanother story for another time (remember the Neverending Story? Falkor was awesome). HOLY FARGIN SHITE! PATTY GRIFFIN! Cool. I have not heard her album, but she falls under my category of music that I like and this is most excellent. Just got Mike's post about this. Neato mosquito. Yay and all that other stuff. WHopppeeeeeeeeee. And I think that in every post I write, I shall say: Hey Newbies, read the flaming FAQ before you do anything! SO I close this long-ass post with: Paul "what was I thinking?"
