I have a tent. Fits three very comfortably, five kinda squishly. It's actually a rather large tent. Very nice. I won't be using it (I'm sleeping in my car) but I will be lugging it around since I'm taking it home. So Liz, if you want, you can use it for Thursday night. You know, I had this longass message all ready and raring to go around 7:30 pm est, and it up and disappeared. I thought that I sent it off, but it hasn't appeared. And it wasn't the one about "I don't know how long this will be." If it really doesn't appear, here is a summation. And it was a very good, coherent message too. Shucks. First:I was wondering what station you, Liz MEFAN22, heard the dj's ragging on Jewel because if it was WHFS, then I might understand. Are you sure that they weren't being quasi-fascetious? If you listen to Radio Angels, Aq and Rob (or Bob) joke her about her tardiness (the interview took place a little less than a year before the HFStival incident, so no connection, but you see how jokey the guys are). Second:Piglet and Fuzzy. Do you want me to record the Seattle show onto a blank and bring it to woodstock where you can either trade or pay me for the blank? You never re-responded about it. And did all of my other leaves for the Seattle tree get the tapes? Third: Yay about Patty Griffin! Fourth: About AESTHETE99's post about holding onto Jewel and being afraid of people latching on: Basically I understand (dammit, this was the meat and potatoes of my post and it was well thought out and intelligent and now it's gone and I can't remember it all), and sometimes feel the same way and hate myself for it. I pointed out about how it is similar to collectibles such as comic books (i don't collect em anymore. I read em) in that people try to spot trends and get in on them before they become popular, thus allowing them to boast when others see how "informed" and cool they are and how much money they have made (kinda like stocks and bonds). In both areas, collectibles and music, some people try to avoid jumping on the bandwagon because it shows that they are not cool (yeah sure), but when they attempt to break new ground, they jumpstart the bandwagon. I know that I used to be one of them "I'm cool cause I heard of them before they became big and they're so cool and now everybody listens to them and that sucks" people and sometimes I still am, but I'm moving away from that. Partly because my tastes are slightly shifting away from the "alternative" market that might as well be called top 40. I also book shows here, and I actually worry that the shows I want to put on won't attract enough students, so I'd love to have more people listen to someof them so I don't feel guitly if I do book them and guilty if I don't. And I am on two other lists (Happy Rhodes' ecto and Sarah Mc's fte) that deal with and nurture the form of music I like (female vocalists) from which I am turned on to many other artists. The people on the lists love to share their recent finds, purchases, concerts beyond just the main artists. This is getting long. Newbies: Read the flaming FAQ before you post anything. Finally (I'm pretty sure I had more to say in the lost post, but I can't remember for the life of me, and this post is long enough. Imagine, the other one was twice the size of this): I think people mixed up the ideas of the news list and the newsgroup. As James said and I believe dave wanted, the news list would just be a thing that people subscribe to that was sent out whenver new news concerning Jewel such as recording, releases, concert date announcements, media appearances, was made available. It would not be a whole nother list or a usenet newsgroup, and it wouldn't split this list into factions. It would be there for people who can't or don't want to deal with the large volume of mail we generate and for those who are not die-hard fans of Jewel but are still interested in the news of her. Oh yeah, I wanted to say something about Jeff is the majordomo of the list but he doesn't moderate it. He doesn't weed out posts because he has some other mailing lists to handle, too. Crap. I had so much good stuff written, and now it's all gone. I hate it when that happens. Paul "email vortex" Kim ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Fri, 12 Jul 1996 23:56:05 -0400 Subject: Patty Griffin Hi everyone, I'm so happy Jewel has invited Patty Griffin to open the show on Thursday. Patty is a newly-signed artist who I hope gets the same kind of breaks and success that Jewel has seen. I think she has a lot of the same qualities that have made me such a fan of Jewel - honest, heartfelt songwriting that paints pictures, a fabulous voice and wonderfully passionate expression in her music. When I first heard her CD a few weeks ago, I thought how much Jewel fans would probably like it, so I'm really excited that she'll actually have a chance to play for all of us at the Thursday show. I think she'll set a great mood for what's sure to be a magical night. There doesn't seem to be much about Patty on the net yet, as a couple of people have already pointed out. Here's a review I found of the CD, which is called Living With Ghosts. I think this is from a Boston newspaper- - --- In a virtually unprecedented move -- one that is usually reserved for superstars like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen -- the record company is releasing what is basically Griffin's guitar-and-vocal demo, with no overdubs or accompaniment. A listen to an advance copy shows why: Griffin's naked, emotional songwriting, richly melodic fingerpicking and raw, passionate vocals need no elaboration. Although it sounds nothing like him, the overall effect is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Some might compare Griffin to flavor-of-the-month Alanis Morissette, but this former waitress is no manufactured "angry young woman." She's the real thing. ttyl, - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK danstark@mnsi.net Windsor, Ontario, Canada - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: Bondflash@aol.com Date: Sat, 13 Jul 1996 00:03:07 -0400 Subject: Foolish games, a question about Smashing Pumpkins guess what!! I was shopping with my mom today and as we were walking around the store, I heard foolish games playing in the store!!! I dunno if they were actually playing a radio station or their own in-store music (somehow, I don't think it was commercial radio because they played a debbie gibson song after foolish games :)) My mom looked at me funny cuz of how excited I was.. It is nice hearing a jewel song on the radio besides WWSYS!! :) so anyway, I thought I'd tell you guys :) oh, I have a question... has anyone heard anything about Smashing pumpkins on the radio today? My mom thought she heard the DJ say something about a SP backup musician being dead of a drug overdose and the drummer being arrested :( I haven't heard anything myself tho, but I was really upset cuz I like SP alot and I saw them in concert (for the 1st time) just a few days ago (july 9th)... it's scary isn't it? There is news like this too often- good musicians dying because of drugs..I am so glad Jewel is drug free... :( see ya, Lauren ------------------------------ From: plus@seark.net (plus) Date: Fri, 12 Jul 1996 23:14:31 -0500 Subject: Re: Foolish games, a question about Smashing Pumpkins >oh, I have a question... has anyone heard anything about Smashing pumpkins on >the radio today? I am wondering if her performance will also be on the official recording? Also, would anyone who owns a majority of Jewel's soundtrack songs (The Craft, I Shot Andy Warhol, Phenomenon, the surfer tribute, etc.) be willing to make a compilation copy for me? I will trade live shows, list compilations, whatever. I am a starving student in need of more Jewel!
