Hello Everyday Angels, My name is Robert (aka ROCKER). I have been subscribing to this list since April and I figured that it's about time that I introduced myself to everyone. I have been hooked on JEWEL ever since I saw her on VH1's DUETS last year. I had originally intended to watch the show because I liked MELISSA ETHERIDGE. I was completely blown away by JEWEL's performance of FOOLISH GAMES that I ended up playing the song again and again and again that night. I'll bet I replayed it at least 25 times. After about the 25th time I had to here more JEWEL so I got on the phone and dialed 1-800 MUSIC NOW to see if they had JEWEL's cd in their inventory. Sure enough they did, so I listened to the three selections of which they only play about ten seconds of and was convinced that I just had to have the POY cd. BTW I also called the MUSIC NOW number about twenty-five times that night, which was about when my fingers decided that they were not going to push anymore buttons. The next day I went and bought the CD at BEST BUY for $7.99. I went home and ripped open the cd and played it about a thousand times. I really felt guilty for paying such a low price for such a magnificent piece of work that I would have paid at least five times as much for. I live in the northern Alabama area, therefore I'm centrally located to a few metropolitan cities which is where I saw JEWEL. I saw her in Nashville back in January and I recently saw her in Atlanta. I was blown away by both her shows. I hope to be making the trek to JEWELSTOCK as I'm still waiting to here from AKIRA telling me that my confirmation has been confirmed. I RSVP'd for me and a guest. So far I can't find anyone to go with. I'll be making the trek to JS in my convertible. Anyone still need a ride that wants to ride with the ROCKER as we rock and roll on down the highway? I'll probably be travelling thru Chattanooga, Knoxville, Roanoke, Harrisburg and NYC. I haven't made any accomodations yet, so I was wondering if anyone had any extra room available. If you do have room or want to catch a ride with me, Email me and let me know. I hope this wasn't too lengthy and I hope to see you guys soon at JS. ------------------------------ From: Crunch Date: Tue, 09 Jul 1996 21:26:12 -0400 Subject: JEWELSTOCK: ANY MORE CAMPERS ?? Yesterday we talked about how different people deal with the death of a child, so I brought up the movie The Crossing Guard when we got to how the death of a child can often cause a weak marriage to break up and the effects it can have on adults. So today I brought in the song. The class was so quiet during the song and right after. Then we got into this big discussion of how Jewel captures the feelings of the father in both words and vocal expression, this was the version off of Radio Angels (or Rare?) got into a long discusion about the lyrics and how she performeds them especially at the end when it sounds like a stylized scream. Then a small group of yound women in the front got into a discusion about Jewel, two had heard her before and kept comenting about her beautiful voice, the others were instant fans. I had listened to the lyrics before but hearing it in that really quiet room with others I got into another level with the song. Especially the fact that the song is saying it needs a body to love that he needs a "house" or an "altar" to love. The way Jewel sings "I lost my favorite word -- Emily" just eats at me. She captures Jack Nicholson's character so well in the song, it still amazes me. sorry about the length all, just thought it was interesting and we used to analize songs here.
