Suddenly it sounds like we need to clear our posts with you. Because I read all the posts, including yours, I have have gotten to learn a little about all of you. From reading your posts I can tell you are a nice person and you often bring fun and humor to the list. But this doesn't sound like you. We are all participants of this great big thing called the Internet. It has done as much for freedom and democracy as our own Bill of Rights. Now you come along and try and erect a Berlin Wall. I think you mean well and want this list to survive. I am on 4 other music lists and 5 tech lists. Some lists I enjoy more than others. Yhere are lists that I have left because they infringed on my rights by having to many rules. The Jewel list is my favorite. The people on this list have the most diverse personalities. You all have such a broad range of interests and are not just a bunch of me too's. Sure the list can be long and time consuming. It may contain some poorly written posts like mine. Some of the posts may be way off the subject. So what. You never know who you may turn off if everyone has to worry if there post is exactly on the mark. You and I are both on the same side, we just have different ideas on how to improve the list. The discussion we are currently having about an all news list and newsgroups is OK, but I don't think they are the answers. May I offer one suggestion. We all could make better use of the subject line. As an example, just announced concert dates, TV appearances and other time sensitive events may stand out if they are marked URGENT in the subject line. REVIEW, BOOTLEGS, TAPE TREE, etc., you get the idea. What do you think? Lets try to attract more people and all work to improve the list and not to chase people away. Also a special thanks to Stephen Tze who supplied me with the JAFord DAT soon to be treed (with the Providence Dylan/Jewel duet as an extra track that I found through a private source). Surprisingly, many proffessionally recorded Jewel shows have also surfaced. Many on DAT and quite a few soundboard directs are among them. The archives is literally growing daily(over 100 shows & growing). I'll continue to supply Dan with the best to tree on the list. If you've yet to contact me with a show that you've recorded, please do so. Please keep these tapes FREE and please NO CD manufacturing. Free circulation of live recordings is a truly wonderful thing. The upcoming Woodstock tapes will bring us all much closer, but it will also be a temptation to some. Respecting this is crucial to it's continuation. In an unrelated matter, Greg Willms posted earlier today: <> I agree with Greg. If it was an unamplified acoustic situation, it would be a pleasant addition while we're hangin out. I'd be willing to bring a very simple setup to possibly record some of this, too. She was also on VH1's House Blend this morning in a segment called "Hi my name is Jewel," she yodeled a little bit. I was lucky enough to catch both of them. I did have a couple of questions. First, does anyone know if Jewel is going to be opening for N. Young in Pittsburgh or in Cleveland? Second, I'm going to be leaving the country for three weeks starting the day before Jewelstock, so obviously I won't be going, but I was wondering if I would still be able to get a copy of the concert when I get back some time in the middle of August? Finally, I just wanted to comment about the recycling issue that was mentioned a little while ago. I saw Seinfeld live last month and I'd say about half of his material was from his TV shows. About 60% of the dancers were either anorexic or bulemic. And I often blamed it on their boyfriends. So I wrote this about that. I didn't agree with that, by the way." YOU'RE SO SMALL by Jewel Kilcher Gonna walk down the street and seduce every man I meet because I'm having a bad day. I am not size six. My legs are not skinny as sticks and dammit, someone's got to pay. (That's the power of a woman, ohhhh) I feel unattractive. I'm gonna see if it's true. I'm going to break a heart or maybe two. I'm gonna put on a sexy red thing Gonna run every ??? (sounds like lake, or late, or wait) I'm gonna pull some strings Cause my strength is in my power over you. (the power of a woman) But I'm afraid that I can't satisfy myself And that my happiness depends on someone else. I feel weak, so you're gonna take the fall. You're so small, you're so small, you're so small. You're so small, you're so small, you're so small. You're so small, I feel fat, you're so small. You're so small, I don't feel anything, cuz you're so small. ************************** The rhythm is really important for this song (but then I'd probably say the same if I transcribed any of the others). First, why the yes: - Despite our unwavering adoration, Jewel is not what you could truthfully consider a "household name." (I think she should be, but "if wishes were horses..." :) Perhaps a newsgroup would turn on some people out there who haven't heard of her, or who haven't heard much by her, and get them interested. In short, perhaps it would create new fans. - This list is wonderful, BUT (yes, there is a BUT...), it is fairly private, meaning it is sort of hard to find without knowing *exactly* what your looking for. - The fact that a newsgroup exists does not mean the list will suddenly die, and it does not mean that everybody on the list has to suddenly start posting there, or even reading it. I see no reason why they cannot be two entirely separate entities. Now, why the no: - Newsgroups can & will attract the lowest common denominator... there will be, invariably, idiots and morons who will post crap. Some newsgroups attract more than others... there's no saying whether or not a Jewel newsgroup would attract idiots. - In a newsgroup, your bound to get the occasional person posting a message telling "everybody" to "join the list." (I saw this happen in the Dave Matthews newsgroup, and the subsequent havoc this wreaked on the list... I believe the list name was minarets... I have since unsubscribed for several reasons, of which, this was one reason.) The list gets inundated for a while by a bunch of fools posting meaningless crap to the list, and all the serious regular folks get pissed, and go hide or hibernate or something. - A newsgroup, from what I've seen, is more likely to get a snotty, holier-than-thou attitude about the artist. Instead of welcoming new fans to the group, people tend to go, "Oh, well, you're not a 'real' fan (what that means, I don't think I'll ever know) because you just started liking . Go away or we will look down our noses at you some more." This attitude has always irked me (as if the newsgroup readers who have been reading the group the longest somehow "own" the rights to be a fan of a particular artist), and I think it would be a great shame to see that attitude take over Jewel's fans. So, there you have it... a (hopefully) coherent & articulate argument which says, "it don't matter to me." :) FWIW, I would subscribe to a Jewel newsgroup if one was created, and I honestly don't think that the list would suffer much (if at all) from the creation of such a newsgroup. - ---------- Kevin Pease kestrel@WPI.EDU ------------------------------ From: Piglet Date: Mon, 08 Jul 1996 22:06:55 +0600 Subject: Emily does anyone see anykind of problem with me using the song and lyrics of Emily in my Sociology of Death class?
