JewelStock here I come!!!!! I have a sighting to report... I was standing at Mr. G's Ice Cream Barn today and who do I see ordering ice cream? You guessed it...Miss Kilcher herself...ok maybe not but it sure did look like her. I have been sitting around for the past couple of hours listening to POY and MOM, and watching all of the Crossroads appearances even the Vail one. I have listened to my fav song about 10 times in a row. (Racecar Driver) I have a question...is anyone else going through this sudden burst of obsession? That is a stupid question considering the fact that there have been many Jewel spottings across the globe in the last few days. How does she get from one place to another so quickly anyway. I guess she must be riding on her magic frisbee. Geez now she is on VH1 Duets. I guess it is just a Jewel world. I do have a serious question. Why don't they ever play the IWMFO vid anymore. Luckily I have it on tape.(even though I don't really care for the "pop" sound) That urked me that they didn't playit on the A-Z thingy just as much as it urked me that they barely played Melissa. On another note. I was able to see Jewel perform live at the Paradise in Boston in May and I was absolutely amazed. i'd never seen her perform anywhere before. The addition of the band was really neat. From glimpsing through the masses of messages since then, I'll agree that the fans that kept yelling out "YODEL!!" were really annoying. I was up in the balcony and noticed the extremely large quantities of empty beer bottles strewn around. I'm pretty sure this had something to do with it. She seemed pretty ticked off by them too. I'd never heard the marijuana story either. My brother and some friends just stood there laughing... She's a great story teller. No. Everything I want to read about Jewel is here on the list, why would I want to double my effort by having it all duplicated on a newsgroup? Plus, newsgroups get spammed regularly with junk mail advertisements and flame wars. They seem to attract people with too much time on their hands and only a fleeting interest in the newsgroup's actual topic. What sets the list apart from that newsgroup junk is the fact most people here are interested enough in Jewel that they made a real effort to find the listserv and subscribe. As for a news-only version of the list, I find it's the extra chatter that has helped build the character of this list. But it's also true there are a lot of posts lacking content that take time to go through, especially for people on the digest format. I subscribe to the loose mail form, and have become pretty good at looking at headers and deleting the threads I don't care about before proceeding (but Karl, I do read your posts!). With the growth in Jewel's popularity and the size of the list, a news-only version would certainly let people who want the content but don't have time for the frivolous stuff stay on here. So if someone wants to go to all the work to set it up and maintain it, then FWIW I'd say go for it. ttyl, Dan - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK danstark@mnsi.net Windsor, Ontario, Canada - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: Steven Tze Date: Mon, 8 Jul 1996 01:44:58 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Jewel newsgroup....NO!NO!NO! Someone suggested that we try and get a newsgroup going for Jewel. As of now, I'd like to voice a strong 'no'. If there had been a newsgroup, I don't think Jewelstock would have been possible. There would have been too many people knowing about the event and too many people that are not REALLY interested in her music would try and cash-in on this free Jewelstock experience. Unfortunately, I can't go, but I'm glad fans that seriously enjoy her music get to go. Fans are on this list because they have taken the effort to find the web sites, gotten word of mouth, etc. At least for now, let's just keep this mailing list. It serves the purpose of informing a close-knit group of fans..... And I was impressed that they actually seem to be playing up the intellegence factor, although I must say that this mag. made Oasis sound brilliant... Despite that, the article was only a page but really cute. The basic picture painted was one of a precocious (sp?) little girl who read philosophy and went around singing to escape. Now US really only does MAINstream artists so maybe this is a sign... An article in Rolling Stone does not mean you're cemented mainstream but an article in US means "Strong Enough" is going to be your next single release. Thought of the day: If the majority of Americans believe in the theory of evolution, as studies prove they do, how can they be so egotistical and believe that they are the final intellegent being? I have found that most newsgroups end up being filled with a bunch of crap no one really wants to see. I.E. Get rich quick scams, phone sex advertisements, FLAMES, and other shit we don't get here. Yeah, we've seen a few minor flame wars, but they have all ended in a day or two and were generally two or three people flaming back and forth. A newsgroup has the potential of being a flame war among hundreds of people. Akira - (and Hiranya and listmembers) I am writing with utmost disappointment to inform you that I will be unable to attend Jewelstock. I have debated this in my head for the past couple of weeks, and it looks as if Jewel cannot compete with sailing! I am an avid sailboat racer here in Chicago, and unfortunately, the Chicago-Mackinac race (4 days, 350 miles) is the Saturday after Jewelstock. I have competed in this race for the past 4 years, and even though I love Jewel's music (and am slightly enamored of her :-), I feel that I cannot possibly attend the concert and make the race. I would, however, like to ask you a favor. Since Jewel has graciously agreed to do two shows, the second for the benefit of the Bearsville Theatre, I would like to send a donation to the theater in Jewel's name. That way, I feel I can be there in spirit, if not in body. If you could somehow get a hold of an address for the Bearsville Theatre management group, I would be indebted.
