We all know Jewel is in the studio working on a new album, any suggestions on what the album name should be? Also, what songs will you be institutionalized if they fail to appear on her new album? Personally, I'll be anti-stoked if "Carnivore" doesn't make the cut, I'd also like to see "Marital Carnival" and "Deep Water". Also, that song about "would you like to catch a cold with me?" would be a good addition too. As for album name, sorry buy I drove from Del Mar to LA last night, got minimal sleep, worked 13 hours today so my brain is fried and I can't come up with a decent suggestion...looking forward to hearing yours though! Finally, three more comments on the Del Mar show: 1. Instead of bashing Buchanan or Dole, Jewel just said something to the affect of, "The world would be a better place because many of our politicians dropped off the face of the earth." 2. Am I the only one there that was reminded of a cheerleader while Jewel was performing? She's the only one I know who can rock out on her guitar and rip some awesome vocals while standing on one foot! I was impressed! 3. I first went to the big clock and looked around. With a few of the posted descriptions I figured it would be easy, regardless of the tens of thousand of people at this massive fair. Look for telltale tee-shirts, I told my family. Even if we find one person it will be easy from that point on. I did find Gerrit. He was the first person in line for general admission. Great guy. I'm sorry I chewed your ear off but I was really wound up. This was to be my first jewel concert. I have been in the music industry for over 20 years. Going to see new artists was part of my work. Since changing careers to computers, concert going hasn't been as frequent. This was certainly the most exited I have been about seeing someone in years. This is not a review, just my story of how I felt seeing Jewel for the first time. For me a good concert is much more then just what I hear. After giving up looking for other list humans, we headed to the grandstand area. The security guard told us the gates would open at 6:00. It was at this time we ran into Gerrit. The guard was amazed that Gerrit and I were strangers and only knew each other from the net. She asked all kinds of internet questions and was fun to talk to. She also said that the gate wouldn't open until after her sound check. That was great news and I proceeded to find a spot to hear her. There was that beautiful voice and only one more door between me and the concert area. The guard held the door open for just a little bit and the sound poured out into this hall filled with displays of needlepoint and quilts. Our seats were on the fourth level first row. If it were horseracing season, these box seats would have been great. With my binoculars I scanned the crowd below and found Gerrit front and center. I was tempted to go down to the floor because it was not filling up very fast. Alanis played last week and her show sold out months ago. I stood my ground , sure that very soon the place would be filled. I'm glad I stayed there. I was sitting on top of the world. To the east 10 miles, I could see Black Mountain. On a hillside just beyond the Fairgrounds, hot air balloons kept on appearing one after another. To the west was the beach and the most beautiful sunset. In front of me was this huge racetrack. In the center was a huge Ferris-wheel covered with neon lights. Another midway was just to my left with an equally spectacular Ferris-wheel and all the other rides with everyone screaming and having a good time. I could see the Ford Probe that Jewel arrived in. No Limo for this down to earth angel. A VW van parked just in front of the Ford served as a reminder of her struggle to fame. The stage was decorated as if it were part of the garden exhibit, covered with palms and bushes and a white trellis ready for a wedding party. Jewel came out wearing a lemon yellow short skirt and white blouse with short white boots. She took my breath away. She is more beautiful than I imagined. I started to mumble silly things to my wife. Please somebody slap me. Snap out of it Igor. Grow up Igor. Her first song was POY. It was as if she could read my mind. It's as if she was saying, OK I'm beautiful, yea I got a great voice, but I came here to to say something and I'm not wasting any time to let you know what I'm about. She set the tone of the show immediatly. What a brilliant and daring song to open with. But the way she did it was like a tutor and we were the students. She did everything only a great artist can do in concert. She took this huge out door concert and turned it into an intimate coffee house show. She played material not on her CD and sang many songs very different from the recorded versions. She made me realize I was in the presents of greatness. I am looking forward to many more Jewel shows. The only fault of the show was it was less than an hour long. I will add this show to my list of great moments in music. The Del Mar Fair show was two days ago, and I haven't quite read all the posts since I left on Friday, but I did a search for "Del Mar" and read thru those. ;) First things first I enjoyed the fair, but got bored after about 3 hours and $40. I got a cool Cat-In-The-Hat Hat..but it was blue.. no red. :( Anyway, I was napping in front of the stage where Jewel was to be playing when the security idiots started tyelling at everyone to leave. At first I just respected their judgement and left.. hung around on the outskirts of the area. For the next hour and a half they proceeded to yell at everyone who kept walking thru before they finally got people guarding all the entrances. In any case, After that I found where the line was the start and with nothing better to do plopped myself down on the ground about 4ish to play solitaire. After about almost an hour Igor came over and was talking to the security guard about the concert before inquiring me if I was on the list (at first not noticing my shirt and pants, ahahha). In any case, we talked for quite a while and I must add that even tho he did talk my ear off, it was great.. I didn't mind at all. =) While talking to Igor, Brandon found me and we started talking...We just stood in line and talked for the remaining part of the hour, I showed a few people my 26+ tape collection of Jewel bootlegs.. ;P before we were allowed in. As soon as we made it in we rushed to the front and got front row center. Perfect. We just sat back far enough on the asphalt to see Jewel on stage ('cept fer her ankles and below). While we were waiting we talked to those around us (Jamie & Deadra) before Sinjin made his way over as we interupted him to introduce ourselves. Enough already.. on to the concert.. We ended up standing up as soon as she came out after blowing off the "Miss San Diego" thing or whatever that announcing person was 45 min before Jewel came on (getting our hopes up and then taking off) In any case.. Jewel started off with Pieces of You as usual (usually starts with that or Behind The Wall) and continued on playing a pretty good set including Carnivore, Satellite (which she SAID she never played before.. LIAR! eheh.. she played it at Java Joe's on the 9th ;) eheh), Near You Always, and of course many others.. Once she hit WWSYS I got depressed cuz I know that she usually has that as the 2nd to last song on the set. As predicted she played Chime Bells directly after that. To my delight she played an encoure, and (as I predicted again, eheH) sung Amen. To my extreme surprise, she actually came out AGAIN! and she played two more songs by request.. my memory is shaky, but I believe she played I'm Sensitive and then Rocker Girl. The whole time Brandon was shouting out "Flower" and had even drawn a wonderful little banner (ok..only on 8 1/2 x 11" paper, but hey) which I attemped to get her to read. In any case, she FINALLY heard once when he requested it in the encoures, but she sighed whistfully, sounding disappointed, explaining that she doesn't think she remembers that song well enuf. So we gotta get her the lyrics!! =) If I had time (had to meet my car 30 min later), I would have tried to stick around and give her my extra copy of Rare Angels.. but oh well. Lets get her the Lyrics for Flower! =) If ANYONE finds ANY cheap (~$300 or below) round trip flights from the west cost, PLEASE let me know.. I would LOVE to go to JewelStock. This is the only time of the year that I'm NOT in New York.. perty sad. In any case, the concert was wonderful, she wasn't as tanned as when I saw her at Shoreline, but she wore the same type of outfit. She was beautiful as always and seemed to have a new habit of trying to stand on one foot while jamming on her guitar.. :> This time we didn't even have a chance to get a picture of her flipping anyone off tho.. ;P (THen again, no one gave her any real reason to). Anyway.. I ramble much and I should be getting some sleep before work tommorrow morning. G'night to all! =) If anyone ELSE taped the show, let me know.. cuz I'd be interested if it's good quality. :) (I taped it on Brandon's tape player.. so he still has it tho, eheh) I'm still being kind with copying tapes.. check out my list at http://www.endor.org Right now I'm working on four sets of tapes (from 2-8 each), so if I'm copying tapes fer you, I didn't do ANY of them all weekend, so I probly won't have 'em out for a few more days. Some comments on the Del Mar Fair show: My friend and I had wandered around the fair from about 12:00 noon.. we had seen everything there was to see, done everything there was to do, so we went to find our seats in the grandstand. Although it was high (4th balcony), we were virtually in the very center..Jewel's mic stand was lined up perfectly with my seat. heh. :) Anyway, this was about 3 hours before the show. We were eventually kicked out because we didn't have any badges. ("We don't need no stinking badges, we have tickets" I thought to myself.) The security dude said it was cool if we chilled on the second balcony, so we proceeded down there and sat for quite a number of hours. We eventually got kicked out of the middle of the grandstand for the soundcheck..we just chilled off to the side and listened to the whole Soundcheck. I was a bit worried when i didn't see big blue. Anyway, after the soundcheck we went to grab some food for before the show. We wanted to get some shaved ice cones, so we had to go to the infield (the middle of the track). This is where it gets cool.. on the way to the infield, just before we got to the tunnel, I saw a blonde haired beauty wearing the same clothes that jewel had for the soundcheck.. "funny," I thought to myself, "that looks like jewel." By the time I realized that it WAS jewel walking past me, it was too late. DAMN. :) Anyway, she was walking with a big smile on her face, arms locked with another lady.. my guess would be that she was heading towards the rides...(She told us durring the show about the ride that flipps you around). I thought it was cool that Jewel, despite having all of this success, is still able to walk around like a normal human being without being mobbed, doing all the things she likes,.. Anyway, I was a little dissapointed with the actual show. I knew going into it that it would in no way compare to her coffehouse gigs I had seen. There's no way that a distant stadium (or grandtand in this case) show can compare to a closer personal experience such of that of a coffeehouse. Anyway, I was a little mad because everyone in the boxes around me were talking.. no respect. This all changed with carnivore (my fav song), however, when everyone shut the hell up after hearing jewel's immense voice. she just blew everyone to hell with that song..it was great. I missed big blue, and I missed nicotine love. :( The set was short, and I know why.. Del Mar has a sound ordincance which calls for the end of "noise" at 9:00.. I remember this, because when I saw soundgarden at the fairgrounds (not durring the fair) a few years ago, they got busted for playing well past 11:00.. Durring the show, I noticed a blue van...my friend and I theorized that it was hers, so following the show we went down there to wait for her... our theory never got tested, because some big, buff, samoan security guard kicked us out of the area. :( Anyway, I got some pictures of the van, so that's cool.. One thing, though.. the license plate on the van at the show was different than the plate seen on the van in the picture in people magazine..but the curtains were the same..so was it her van? I read in an earlier post that someone said "it was." Wierd. Anyway, overall it was cool. One more thing: After seeing Jewel three times in the past 3 weeks, I wonder if anyone else has noticed that she "recycles" her stories and comments. I heard the dylan story at all 3 shows, and they were nearly identical, almost rehearsed. The same goes for the "I flare my nostrils" story, "San Diego is the best place ON earth," "Take it up one half step like a good whitney houston song," etc.. has anyone else noticed this "recycling" of comments that she uses? May the force be with you and stuff. Whoops, I forgot to cc: that to the list. This is an excellent point. If some time is put into the web pages, they could be sufficiently deceitful that nobody not on the list would get any use out of them. For example, pick a demographic that does not usually browse the web, let's say Maytag repairmen, and make the site about a Maytag Repairman's retreat. Add sufficient pictures of Maytag appliances, and a few links to other appliance sites on the net, and a good descriptive url for the web indexers to find, like http://your.site.here/~washerman/maytag/events/retreat.html and voila! Nobody is going to be out looking for washer/dryer repairman retreats except possibly competitors, and heck, if someone shows up looking for appliance-repair types, they should probably be allowed to see Jewel to get cheered up anyway. ------------------------------ From: Brian Mendonca Date: Mon, 01 Jul 1996 08:43:45 -0400 Subject: Re: Ani& Jewel -Reply Give Tracy Bonham's whole album a listen before writing her off -- it's pretty good.
