I was very dependent on the date. I have to take about a week off of work so I can get there and back. Not to mention that the only other obligation I have is that I'm the best man in my friend's wedding on the 26th of July which, thankfully, doesn't conflict. Also, the carpool list looks more like an "I need a ride list." I would be very disappointed if I was sitting at home on my butt, while there was an empty seat left by someone who couldn't get a ride. I am generally not one to complain, but I think these are valid concerns. On another note. Just when I had started think that I was never going to eat the street in my motorcycle riding exploits, I fell off. I was coming home from work about 10:30 last night. I had completed about 9 1/2 miles of the 10 mile journey. I came around the second to last corner before home, when I saw about five feet in front of me a UFO. That is: Unidentified Furry Object. My first impression was that it was an opossum, but the more I think about it, I'm leaning toward raccoon. It must have been sitting about two feet tall. Anyway, to make a long story short, too much front brake with too much lean angle is a bad thing. The next thing I knew, I was crawling out from under my poor motorcycle cursing small woodland creatures. Fortunately, I was only doing about 20 MPH. I'm sportin' a couple of holes in my hands, some road rash on my arm, and a sore wrist. I'm sure that I've had worse falls while riding a bicycle as a kid. Only superficial damage to my motorcycle. A few scratches and a dent in the tank from my knee. Doesn't anyone here believe that MTV, VH1 and other music oriented companies might possibly monitor some of these listserves? Especially some of the more up and coming young artists, which is a category that Jewel fits into quite nicely. I just see it as very possible that MTV and/or VH1 might already know about this concert. I doubt they would actually mention it on the air before the concert takes place. After all, we would make sure they received a lot of flak for such a blatant act of idiocy. I rather think, if they know about it, they would keep it to themselves and maybe try and get a small crew in to possibly film a little of the event. If they did, they would be the only ones covering it. Well, that's just how I feel. Yeah, we shouldn't tell anyone outside of the list about the concert, but don't be surprised if MTV doesn't already know about it. They have e-mail too, you know. Let's say MTV has someone spending all their time reading mail from music-related mailing lists. How many such lists could one person handle even if the idea were only to scan for tidbits? True, but I was thinking more along the lines of an automatic reader. A program (or set of programs) that read each mail and scan for key words such as "concert" or "new song" or something like that. Then each message with these select key words or phrases are condensed into a fairly short subset. I'm not quite sure what that means, but it goes on to say that she sings around a melody. And THAT was a very cogent observation, something I've probably realized myself ;), but wasn't able to articulate. It could come from here enchantment with Ella Fitzgerald, probably the best female jazz singer since Billie Holiday. And maybe that is why her songs seem to mesh so pleasantly with my sense of music. I was exposed to all types of music at an early age and jazz has always been my favorite. Jewel, as in jazz, teases her melodies in many songs. Sometimes like Ella, she indicates where the melody is by the notes she is actualluy singing. Other times she'll speak the words with just enough inflection, like Billie. From my background this all seems so natural to me that I never really thought of it before. Listening to Jewel's music feels comfortable. It didn't have Woodstock in the database, but I did get perfect, detailed directions from Toronto to Albany (which, I understand is the closest "big city"). I was quite impressed with the accuracy of the directions, so this might be helpful for some of you. I think the CD-ROM has more cities then the demo, so it might have Woodstock, but I don't think it is worth buying just for this.
