Enjoy! My life has been distinctly Jewel-less for the past few weeks. I saw and recorded her Leno appearance, but that's pretty much been IT sans this list. I saw the last thirty seconds of last Thursday's Conan the Comedian, just long enough to see that Duncan Sheik's sideburns haven't changed significantly since May 3. OK, even though I saw that Charlie Brown movie where he goes to the spelling bee and futzes the name of his own dog, I never did figure out the "i before e except after c" deal, so someone please correct me permanently: is it "Sheik" or "Shiek?" Is it "beagle" or "beagel?" In the absence of the sun, inside the absence of fear, and trapped within the absence of fresh Kilcher, I've sampled some new music. Since Beck's "Odelay" is garnering generally universal good buzz, I picked it up and it is rather ... Beck-y. But I like Beck so that's, as Stuart Smalley would say, OK. I also nabbed Everything But the Girl's new album; kind of like Sade backed by a less looney Aphex Twin. Like that one too. OH YES! NEW METALLICA! Anyone want to know what the cover of "Load" REALLY is? And speaking of Sade, she's changed her name to "George Michael" and has just released an album called "Older." I have not been devotedly perusing the digests for the past two weeks so I can only respond to the one general trend I've noticed: the personal introductions. So let me weigh in: I am an eighty-two year old Lithuanian tree surgeon enrolled in the Witness Protection Program (after ratting on the Greek Mafia's participation in the illegal banana import business). I measure 4'9", 238 lbs., have Crimson Glow-dyed hair, and am currently working toward the world record for longest toenails. My favorite food is the leek. Although my new identity requires me to profess my adoration for Miss Kilcher, my true favorite musician, or musicians, rather, are the Baklavian Accordian Quintet. My favorite film is "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol," my favorite actor is Pat Hingle and my absolute favorite actress is Miss Patty Duke. I am, of course, lying my ass off, but to tell the truth would be blasphemy to the enigma that is me. So, I'll let whatever drops out my fingers and onto the keyboard speak for me. THAT, I'm sure, may be all you'll want to know. My college mail room is going to be slower than a Basset hound on prozac in forwarding my magazines to me this summer, so I may NEVER see the US magazine with Miss Kilcher in it. I hope she doesn't ask us to burn that one like she did with Allure. Let's grasp at even more conversational straws, shall we? I restrung my guitar (I don't think it's officially my father's anymore) and bought a case for it, but I still suck. The girl at the music store flirted with me and is the first person I've ever encountered who actually noticed my lazy eye (in medical terms: "amblyopia," which contrary to popular belief is not the fear of frogs). She said she was blind in her right eye so she tends to notice such things. At least she didn't ask me if I had osteocondritus, at which point I think I'd run as quickly as my perverted knees would let me to the next music store. The comic strip "Non Sequitir" has introduced Homer, Alaska, to the rest of the United States. Wiley didn't mention Jewel but it's still good PR. Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern broke up. Damn. I would've married either one of them. I guess I can start obsessing over Dern again now. Naaaah. Still no Jewel for me this July, but I've got "Weird Al" Yankovic this Thursday and "Les Miserables" in August. And I mustn't forget my personal cultural event of the year: "Independence Day." I'm a sucker for fiction where humanity is nearly extinguished. Heart of gold have I! MmmmMMMMMmmmm! Yes! OK, so Yoda doesn't transfer well to type. I'm excited. I hope that definite concert date is decided soon, because I will have to buy a very expensive plane ticket to get there, but I want to go! I'm a charge nurse (RN) at a local hospital, and my schedule for that week needs to be arranged real soon, as well as those pesky plane tickets... Jewel is such a wonderful person for doing this...and everything else she does. I may have to make some more handmade ceramics for her...she already has two of my teacups... PHOTOS.....there, got your attention...I took some great ones of Jewel at the first date of her tour with the band in S.F. I would love to take some at a concert where photos are actually allowed, and be the official photo person for this. I am finishing two more degrees: a B.S. in Fine Art, and in Photography right now, and could get some great photos for web pages, and actual printable photos. I sent something to Hiranya before, but her computer problem may be why I was left hanging.... I have a very nice camera, quiet, and lots of photography knowledge. I just shot my first paying photo job, and am entering and winning some photo competitions. (there, I know everyone like's to know if someone has any qualifications) I have no ties to any media...Just a big Jewel fan who's making photography his life and would love to photograph Jewelstock!! Before we get too many complaints about the dates narrowed down to for JewelStock (July 17th or 18th), these were chosen due to a VERY narrow window given to us (the organizers) by Lenedra last night. The 16th is still a possibility (a Tuesday) but highly unlikely. I would have to say that the 17th or 18th are quite near certain to be THE final possibilities. To all of you who have EMAILed me already on whatever since last night, I will respond to you individually TONIGHT, I gotta go to work now. ******* Also remember, it IS my intent to use my other main address (ducksoup@spectra.net) as soon as they are online again, so any EMAILs to me specifically, please send to one of them and CC to the other.********** More info to be posted as we recieve it Mike ------------------------------ From: Aaron Matthew Suever Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 03:02:21 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Neile (was Re: Jewelstock) Oh, I forgot to mention before that Neile said she'd be back sometime in August. So this yahoo says, "Wahoo!" Anyway, on a serious note, now that this thing is starting to firm up, I have a concern. Some listers have left for a while, be it summer vacation or whatever. I know the subject was already mentioned in the early planning stages, and I agree that it would be difficult tracking people down to tell them about it, but I think we should try to do something. Remember Neile Graham? She's off at a writing workshop now. Can you imagine if she missed hearing about this? Well, I didn't want to let that happen, so I emailed her (btw, she says to tell everyone hi). Luckily she had it covered already, with a few people keeping her informed of the most important list stuff. I know we have a lot of people planning on coming already, but if anyone's in contact with an old lister who's off for a while, you might want to let them know about it if you haven't already. I don't think we need to do anything more than that. Aaron ------------------------------ From: mickster@li.net Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 08:19:29 +0000 Subject: Where will JewelStock be held? I just want to clarify something I sadi in an earlier post that may slightly conflict with Akira's post. The July 17 & 18th dates are indeed TENTATIVE. Things can change. Lenedra plans on finding more today and maybe tomorrow and get back to me and Akira. We will then go to Woodstock (Saturday likely) to hopefully land a venue and THEN confirm a date. Lenedra did give us a REVISED window of dates that is much smaller than Hiranya's post of July 10 thru 30.
