I was on WNEW for a while until they went back (once again) to Classic Rock format, but before they did, Jewel did an in-studio interview and mini-concert, which is how I first heard her; coincidentally I had just bought the SPEW CD (for 88 cents!) and of a sudden I was smitten with this finely-spoken powerful voice. POY turned up used the following week, for $10, which is more than I usually pay for CD's but was well worth it. WNEW dropped her (they do that, for some odd demographic reason, with lots of artists, although they were solidly behind Patti Rothberg), and when they dumped the new music format I moved on... To Z100, a huge commercial operation dabbling in New Music, with a tiny, tiny playlist. Every two hours you will hear, over and over, identical cuts by Verve Pipe, Primitive Radio Gods, Blues Traveler, Alanis, No Doubt, Oasis, a few others, and--Jewel. Unfortunately, they only play WWSYS, although they do that about once an hour. She has a number of promo spots with them ("Hi, this is Jewel, you're hanging on Z100") and they covered the frisbee event endlessly--and this is a station (disturbing, but so often true of rock stations) that runs no news at all, not even music news, and certainly nothing of national/international import. Hell, back when I was a kid we listened to the radio to find out what was going *on* and all that. Anyway. Numerous requests for something other than WWSYS have gotten me nowhere. Today's news from Z100 (and I don't expect it to be accurate): Jewel will be selling autographed frisbees at her upcoming concert dates. Just for whomever might be interested. Oh, yeah: 35. Ivy grad. Poet/writer with a day job in a law firm. Lots of travel. Hair has ranged from butt-length (early college) to skin to mohawk (last summer) and is now in a ponytail most days--it grows fast, blessed be. It's brown and has been dyed black often, bleached blond three times, and once had a big blond stripe with the sides done black. Sort of the Pepe le Peu look. Native New Yorker. Lots of musical consumption and I've played guitar many years, never well (own a gorgeous '74 Les Paul Custom but no amp, and an acoustic that needs neck work). Have acted semi-pro in theatre for about 12 years, currently on hiatus from that mess. Looking forward to serious music and perhaps serious theatre again when I move to New Mexico in the course of this coming year. Did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, Seattle tape leaves email me direct, it's a pain in the butt to reply to the digest in my setup. I'm still missing three of you. I can assure you that it is NOT legal to distribute copies of copyrighted works for profit. Think of it this way -- would it be legal to buy Pieces of You, then copy it onto your own CDs and distribute it? Clearly not. I would add that it is not just tracks 3, 12, and 13, but also the STL and PBGAB tracks that, according to the letter of the law, cannot be copied and distributed since they are all copyrighted works on previously-released albums. However, to draw this out to the extreme, it is also not legal, technically, to tape and distribute concerts of copyrighted works being performed by the artist, so it probably isn't legal to put ANY songs on the proposed CD. Nor is it legal, technically, to make or trade tapes of concerts. As far as I'm concerned, unless we hear otherwise from Hiranya or another person in Jewel's camp, you need to make a personal decision: do I think I'm costing Jewel money by buying this CD? I know I'm never going to find a copy of STL or PBGAB anywhere and I will definitely buy all of her future albums and pay for future concerts, so I feel confident that I will ultimately pay her in full for the pleasure I get from her music even if I buy this non-profit, non-record-company-sanctioned CD. If you REALLY feel bad about buying this CD, buy it and send her a check for a few dollars, which is equivalent to the royalties she would make from the sale of a single CD of her music that her record company put out. Please note that this is not a legal opinion. It is MY opinion based upon whatever rough knowledge of copyright law I've picked up at my job. All of that said, I've already put my order in for one of the CDs. - --Brian ------------------------------ From: Katie McCurry Date: Thu, 20 Jun 1996 10:34:00 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: custom cd track list/ordering I agree- Somebody could get in some serious Sh*t. :) Besides, Most people already have at least a copy of those songs. If I make 500 copies of someone's album and give them away for free in Times Square at high noon, I'm still violating copyright laws, because I'm depriving the artist of revenues that they could have otherwise earned from the sale of the album. Ironically enough, one of my friends told me last night that his boss wouldn't make him a copy of this "Sounds of Nature" CD because it was a violation of copyright laws.
