I remember taping M&M a little after second semester started and after her show in Northampton. Also, was Jewel really on Modern Rock Live, the nation's only alternative rock call in show? I don't remember if she was, but Alan's list has her in August of 1995 doing the show. Jewel seems to not only repeat lines at the end of her songs, she tends to use the same words and phrases a lot in different songs. As I have pointed out before, she has an angel fetish, a love of the word fragile, and also a love of the word "barbed-wire." Paul Kim bahbah oomahmow mow bah bah oomow mow ------------------------------ From: Steve Melisi Date: 18 Jun 1996 16:54:03 -0500 Subject: this email is rated NC-17 Non-Jewel related material coming: The MPAA came up with the NC-17 to take the place of X which was a rating any movie would get if it had what the MPAA considered too much sex and/or violence. For example, Midnight Cowboy was considered too much sex for its day and received an X rating. I think Last Tango in Paris was the same way. The fact is very few movie houses would run an X rated movie, no matter its inherent merit. So, many moviemakers just cut their films to obtain the R and let it go. Henry and June was the first to not do that and that was when NC-17 was slapped onto it instead of the X, becauseit was felt a new rating was needed since X often signalled porn in people's minds rather than mature adult themes. It didnt matter because most movie houses still wont run NC-17 films. That is why you will see some films unrated, which circumvents the issue. Other films like Natural Born Killers originally had an NC-17 rating for its violence but cuts were made. That is generally the case these days. There was a film called Color of Night with Bruce Willis giving the world full frontal nudity but that was given NC-17 until they cut his parts out (so to speak). There is a brilliant but deeply disturbing film from I believe Belgium called Man Bites Dog which has an NC-17 for violence. Showgirls had the explicit sex. There was hope it would really elevate the worth of an NC-17 film, being produced and released by a big studio. Alas, it sucked dishwater. - -steve ------------------------------ From: ALalas@aol.com Date: Tue, 18 Jun 1996 18:08:06 -0400 Subject: re: many replies >Where in tarnation did the saying "nuff said" come from? Guten Tag, Has anyone else out there been getting tired of all of these "clever" puns (y'know, plays on words meant to arouse mirth from deep within the human spirit) that seem to be cropping up in the media. The printed media are by far and away the greatest offenders in this regard. I think this is because it is easier to say something completely idiotic like: "Jewel: A Real diamond in the rough" or "Jewel: a 24 karat diamond of hope" (get it, the "Hope" diamond--I'm NOT making these up) in a paper or magazine, where you don't actually have to look people in the face. I don't know, perhaps I'm the only one that is annoyed by simpletons.... Personally, I will be keeping a frisbee ready, just in case anymore of these trite morsels are uttered within earshot of myself. P.S. I think I'll start calling her "Silmaril" (a good Elven name)--I'd like to see someone make a pun about that. Sorry, unless you read Tolkien, I'm afraid you'll be clueless. Ta-ta. I can only tdo vidoes, adio tapes, and cd's right now) from work. I would typically do it after hours. I plan on making a set of CDs with the best recording of each which I have of each song which has not been released. I know this is a major task, but I'm sure this will be inexpensive considering I just have to pay for the blank CDs. I hear the blank CD's run $5-8 at Fry's Electronics (I have to check to find out an actual price). I would not have any problem making copies for people, but I will not have this job by the end of August (going back to College), so this will be short lived. I see these guys saying you'll do CD's for $15-$30..that's sick. Why don't we just go for $10 including shipping? (priority mail - 2day) I will be working on making a list of songs and the best recording I have of each one and trying to get better for each one.. but that will come later. :) Also.. if anyone, especially those who I have traded with, wants tape labels, I finally found a good way to make them. I have all my tapes labeled with the set lists and a nice format. Just let me know and e-mail me set lists of your tape(s) and I'll pay the 32 cents to send you some labels. :) Jewel played like 4-5 new songs (to me anyway) at Java Joe's.. check out my set list on my page. I just made a list of the highest quality records I have of each song. The "EXCELLENT+" means from CD.. so highest possible. These are rough estimates of quality, so anything in the same category I have to comapre to others of the same song in the category to decide on the best one. Anyway, if you have a better quality copy, or something on DAT, PLEASE let me know. I have plenty to trade (for most opeople anyway..) and would like to get better copies of each song for these CD's. My plan is, once I get permission from those deemed worthy (Hiryana, Dan (from his compilations), etc), I would like to make a few CDs with as many songs possible on 'em which are NOT released commercially (and will not be). This would keep them in the best condition possible, and make it much easier to make copies of Jewel stuff for fans. It looks like it would cost <$10 including shipping for each CD, but I'll have to verify this once it gets under way. Any comments? They did however copyright the G, PG, and R ratings (and later the PG-3 rating). This allowed people to who didn't waste time and money getting a film rated to bestow the X rating on it themselves. The porn industry then began implimenting this rating themselves. The XXX rating doesn't mean anything it was just a way of trying to trick stupid consumers into thinking that the XXX movie was even more explicit than one with the X rating. The NC-17 rating has nothing to do with sex (supposedly) it is supposed to be used for movies that are adult themed and shouldn't be seen by children. There has been a push to start putting the NC-17 rating on movies with graphic violence or drug use. So far when movies get NC-17 ratings they are generally re-edited to get to R simply because it means a larger audience and more money. Other movies such as Showgirls instead use the NC-17 rating as a selling point since the film had little or no redeeming value. Some directors refuse to cut their films to statify these standards and simply let it go with the NC-17 rating (Kids comes to mind in this category). One final note that only proves the stupidity of the film industry. The NC-17 rating has also not been copyrighted which means any one can put it on their film. So, it will soon be replaced by the A (for Adult) rating which will supposedly also be used on many of the borderline R films (Leaving Los Vegas would probably get an A rating when the new rules are set). BTW, I have no idea why I know all this stuff. pjk - -- "Proper treatment will cure a cold in seven days, but left to itself a cold will hang on for about a week" - Henry G. Desperate, he pounded on the door of the nearest building, a small, tidy chalet. The door creaked open to reveal a bearded, aging, salt-of-the-earth farmer, who bid him enter. Inside, before a crackling fire, stood the farmer's wife and exquisitely beautiful young daughter. After the introductions, the farmer leaned over and whispered to the salesman, "You can spend the night, but don't touch my daughter!" The next morning the farmer awoke to find the salesman gone. He then noticed that his daughter's bedroom door stood ajar. Odd! He peeked in on her, and there she lay, nude atop disheveled bedsheets, moaning in semi-conscious ecstasy, her lips smeared with something wet, her thighs caked with-- Instantly, the farmer bounded out the front door, shotgun in hand, headed for the barn and his swiftest steed. But the horse was gone - taken, obviously, by the salesman, who had left behind his old, swaybacked gelding. Cursing, the farmer saddled it up and coaxed it into a canter. The chase was on! Presently, the farmer spied the salesman at the crest of the next hill. The salesman, hearing the cursing and neighing behind him, spurred his chestnut into a gallop. Up hill and down dale they chased, but the result was foregone: the salesman pulled further and further ahead. Finally the farmer reigned in and shouted, "Damn you to hell, you coward! How dare you sleep with my daughter!" The salesman drew up, turned, and shouted back in a singsong voice, "AND YOUR OLD LADY, TOO!!" And that's how yodeling got started. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #286 ***************************
