It was also the 2nd time I got to see Lenedra and Jewel perform together (very, very lullaby performed solo by Jewel's mom). It was a long day full of waiting but all in all very much worth it. About 6 of the first 7 songs were all new including her solo versions of Carnivore, Marital Carnival, a cool new one called Innocence Maintained (with Jewel's usually humorous lyrics) and some of the requests she played were Angel Needs A Ride and I'm Sensitive. Some of the great classics were 1000 Miles Away, She Cries, SIBTW, Tiny Love Spaces, Morning Song, Fragile Flame and WWSYS. She came back to do a 3 song encore of Race Car Driver, Nikos, and Amen. She played from 10:05 to almost 12a and seemed very much at ease in front of the 300 people or so packed into the place. She explained she was tired of the yodeling and was excited that Dylan like her song Sometimes It Be That Way and was excited about touring with Neil Young in August. For those on the list who were there, I was one of the crew (eating licorice and playing chess with a blond and brunette) about 3 rows back sittin on the floor. Hi, I wanted all fans of Jewel to read this letter I sent to a local radio station. If you would like any other info or a review of what she did do, just e-mail me. At any rate, with this bullshit that happened, all fan's of Jewel should be aware of what happen in San Diego. I worte to a local radio station...... Hi Dave, This is a quick account of the event's of tonight. Please forgive any spelling mistakes.... Tonight is the ninth of June, monday. I just came home form Jewel show at Java Joes, and I have to let you know about this bull$hat that occured. You will excuse my "french"...I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. I arrived at 3:30 in the afternoon because I knew Java Joes was small and I wanted a good seat. I sat patiently for three hours untill 6:30. At approx. 6:30, I was let in and bought my ticket. I sat in a chair on the left side of the stage, baked up against the pool table, no more then ten feet away form the stage. The show would not start for approx. three more hours, untill 9:30. I made small talk with people around me and found out the show was just as sold out the day before. I also found out she played for approx. two hours. I was really excited at the thought of seeing such a strong and powerful artist in such a small intimate setting, for a complete two hour show. Time marched on, and the room became extremely full. Full to the point, where the people around me commented on the fact "how could they be letting anyone else in??". Full to the point of no walking room, I mean people's backs aginst my legs on the chair. Full to the point, of a wall of people standing in the back in front of the door. Full to the point, of people doubling and tripling sitting on the pool tables. Jewel arrived at approx. 10:00 and started the show with little fanfare. She was "on" so to speak form the first note. She started to pick up steam and energy as the show progressed. Everyone could tell this was going to be a great show. Then it happened. It was diguised as something small and Jewel was the first to see. At approx 10:40 Jewel's assistant handed her a note. She read it to herself and continued playing. At approx 10:50 she was handed another note, and then became invloved in a conversation with the manager of Java Joes. At that point she stated there was some kind of problem, one which she said she could not talk about, and the show would have to end then. She was going to do one more song and that was it. The crowd was stunned! Nothing, no warning. So she started to sing and within her song, she cleaverly told us that the fire marshell was outside and he was the reason we had to cut the show short. "We were overcrowded" she said. I couldn't believe this....Everyone was mad! She finished and the crowd started to become a little unruley. There was demands for our money back, etc. Jewel saved the day by taking the concert outside for the next hour. It's something she offered to do on her own intitive. It was mart and brave. So where did all this leave me. Well I am mad. I want your listener's to know a few things. I want your radio station which reccomends this establishment to know a few things. That Java Joes did NOT offer any refund, or free show, or any form a compensation for this. Not even a we're "sorry". I also would like to get some answers. Maybe you guys could help? Shouldn't Java Joes know exactly how many people they can have in there bulding? Shouldn't Java Joes have done something to calm the people and restore faith in there establishment? Further, I want to know where the Fire Department get's off grandstanding in the middle of the show. I realize they have a job to do; however, a few things strike me as odd. Java Joes had just as many people the night before, why didn't they stop it then?? Why let the show go on a complete hour before shutting it down?? They could have been inside and shut the show down when it first started. Better yet they could have WARNED Java Joes to not let any more people in. Isn't the real job of the public servants to help us. The best help, would have been to control the situation by watching the people before the fact. Not by, allowing it to occur then taking action. The only good thing I can say about this is that Jewel acted like an angel. She calmed the whole crowd, and got them to move outside. She diffused the situation and turned it to a good thing. She is an asset to her profession and is a real human. She should be comended for her quick intelligent handeling of the situation. I will happily go see her again, just not at Java Joes. So what to do?!? Perhaps, your great radio station could check into this? Obtain an apology, maybe get our money back.....I don't know. I think the only thing that would satisfy me would be a written or verball apology from Java Joes. That's all I can think of. Thank you for allowing me to spew off a little of my anger. I am writing a letter to the Reader, to the newspaper, to the other two alternative radio stations, etc. I am going to letas many people in San Diego know about this as possible. I just hope you can do something for me and the rest of your listener's who attended the show. Dave if this is to hot for you to handle could you see it get's to whoever can rattle some cages....thank you! At any rate, with this bullshit that happened, all fan's of > Jewel should be aware of what happen in San Diego. yes, it was bullshit that the show was stopped, but i think that the acoustic parking lot set made up for it all. how many people can say that they sat right next to jewel at an acoustic performance like that? i think that the whole experience just adds to her enchantment. as far as not breaking up the june 9th show.. there weren't as many people then. they had the chairs set up in the middle, about half way back from the stage.. they could pile more people in the 10th by leaving the whole middle open for sitting.. and that's exactly what happened. joe's just a greedy bastard. I noticed a lot of people looking in the coffeehouse from the windows and doors, and i think that that's where the problem arose .. i stayed after when the cops went in to talk to joe, and they said they were fining him for "congestion." Good. And on jewel's final song that night she improved "there's a fire marshal outside. go home, asshole. fuck you." So was it a fire hazard or just "congestion?" Who knows. But being one who attended both shows, i can say that the parking lot experience makes the june 10th show stand out. embrace it for its uniqueness. - -- js. mailto:jsnod@owl.csusm.edu http://www.csusm.edu/public/guests/fm/ "There must be something else, there must be something good... (Petition for putting it on the next CD deleted) While I like this song too (it's actually my recording on Rare Angels), I'm not sure I like the idea of petitioning Jewel to put it on the next CD. In fact, I'm sure that would be quite ineffective, since I think Jewel is artisic enough to put what she believes is her best on her next album. And that's actually what I would like to hear from the CD anyway. We already have a pretty good copy of Jessica on tape, and Jewel has already released it in revised form as Emily so I think it's unlikely she'll be putting out the Jessica version. If she received enough _individual_ letters from fans asking for the song, rather than a form-letter type petition, I think it would probably have more of an impact though, as I think it would seem more honest. And since there are lots of fans of the song here on the list, maybe she'd consider doing it for us at "Jewelstock".
