Introduction ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ddhaoc@aol.com Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 23:10:27 -0400 Subject: Suggestion post 1 of 3 Hi Angels, this is the first in a series of three posts: We have to prioritize these list group efforts, or many of them will fail or come out half-*ss. Quality first, quantity second, guys. If you want A LOT of average, go to McDonald's. As Jewel fans, we expect -- and appreciate -- exceptional quality. We need organization within the Jewel "fan list." It appears we have many competent, hard working individuals maintaining this list, various web pages, tape trees, a potential fanzine, etc, but as we grow we will have nasty episodes (ie, the past week) if we don't centralize control. Voting is nice, voting is fair, but voting by committee results in confusion, frustration and usually mediocre results (like state and federal government). A fan club to coordinate these efforts is something to think about (Neile?). First, a disclaimer: I have NO interest or experience in establishing a fan club, I am strictly a "behind-the-scenes" type of guy. I suspect some activity is occuring with this, we just need to be kept informed so we don't end up pulling on opposite ends of the same rope! Starting a fan club isn't feasible before JewelStock. Let's also hold off on committing to large quantities of "list group" tees and such until we have a plan in place. By all means, do a special JewelStock tee now, organize the concert, and lay the foundation for a fan club "steering committee." Here's my proposal for a rough short-term schedule: 1) All summer - Run tape trees in rapid succession and spread Jewel Fever 2) June - develop JewelStock plans (with current volunteer coordinators) Include an event tee shirt - go with it pjk, just touch base with people who have done it professionally before (please see my next post) 3) July - have a blast at JewelStock (WHERE and WHEN Jewel says) Hold a pre-event meeting for *all of us* the same day to socialize and discuss some sort of organization 4) August - If its ready, launch the organization and produce the generic list tees (pjk and his advisory staff) for the upcoming album release and tour *** Anyone can do a tee shirt, it's a free country. Just keep in mind Jewel is a commercial commodity for Atlantic and bootleg merchandise with copyrighted elements is illegal. I believe the blessing given by Jewel's group was for the list group, not each individual member! *** Please bear with my sudden surge of posts, Dennis ddhaoc@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Ddhaoc@aol.com Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 23:11:40 -0400 Subject: Tee Suggestions post 2 of 3 Hi Angels, this is the second in a series of three posts: About tee-shirt design and production: As per the "Ito-rule," my qualifications for these suggestions are: * I have made a professional living doing hands-on commercial art, design and illustration since 1978. * For over seven years I managed one of the largest screenprint/embroidery art prep departments on the East coast (24 designers/production artists). As a group we produced excellent artwork, but during this time, we also had many unhappy customers who pig-headedly would not listen to our warnings that their design ideas would not work the way they thought they would. We also had many disappointments when beautifully designed and prepared artwork was botched by less-than-capable screenprinters. The suggestions: 1) A good printer is hard to find. If you find one, pay him more than the "other" printer. 2) Make the artwork as EASY to print as possible. You reduce the possibility of disaster and make whatever printer you do select much better at their craft. 3) Don't do complex color separations, underprint layers, multiple trapped colors or print light ink on a dark fabric. Coverage may not be consistent, fabric colors may leach and discolor the ink, and registration might be a problem. 4) Whatever shirt style you choose, it's better to pay for a quality basic tee-shirt than an inferior quality shirt of a preferred style. 5) Order larger sizes than you think you need. Groups usually end up with extra smalls and mediums. Oversize shirts can be worn by all, smaller shirts go in the closet. 6) Print a small 3"x4" front left chest image and a full size back image. You don't want people staring at you head-on to study a front-printed design, and the design may or may not lie very flattering on the women's shirts. 7) Kill the wraparound ideas. They look great on paper, and usually misprint on the shirt. Successful wraps are expensive, and are either printed on flats of fabric before assembly or require an oversize screen and press (as well as separate sets of screens for small and XXL sizes). 8) Don't cover the shirt with ink. It not only usually looks bad, but plastic-base inks will also stick to you when you sweat or get wet (like at a summer concert). Use negative space as part of the design. (If you don't know what negative space is, please don't do the artwork.) Negative space (aka, NO INK) wears well (!) and is very comfortable to the body and the eye. 9) The design is everything. Fine tune it, print it decent, and it will work. Keep it simple and eliminate every color possible. Above all, DON'T RUSH THE DESIGN PROCESS! All this said (and maybe repeated at that), I'm happy to assist anyone producing the final art with clarification of these suggestions or hands-on effort. Pjk's JewelStock Angel design would work great, just simplify the color breaks and vary the line widths for interest. Please bear with my sudden surge of posts, Dennis ddhaoc@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Ddhaoc@aol.com Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 23:14:30 -0400 Subject: JewelStock Suggestions post 3 of 3 Hi Angels, this is the last of a series of three posts: About JewelStock: The way I understand it, Jewel wants to reward dedicated fans (EveryDay Angels) on the list for their past support, hence JewelStock. Limiting the number of attendees isn't greedy, just smart and in keeping with her offer. If Jewel's career continues at this rate, this will be the last SMALL venue many of us will ever have a chance at. (Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it. Do you want compete for a good spot on the floor with not only this lovable, obsessed bunch of Jewel Nutz, but with the kind of fair-weather concert-goers many lament over in their posts?) Suggestions: 1) Decide how big a crowd we want before it gets TOO big. I'd say 900, 1200 tops. Based on the current list of 450, that would allow a guest each, with exceptions for Jewel "fan families" (yeah, you Greg!). 2) Make a list of current list members (500?). Call it the "A" list. As members sign up over the next month, place them on a "B" list. 3) If the response is overwhelming, require pre-payment and RSVP by all "A" list people. Odds are most cannot make it, so the "B" list will probably all be able to be accomodated as well. Even more likely, the list distinction will only serve as an insurance policy against a flood of last-minute subscribers who only want to crash what amounts to a private party! (And yes, I'd enjoy a show with as few as 100 of us there. Who wouldn't?) 4) If we have a venue choice, get a private hall for the entire day and nix the alcohol. (Honest guys, I like a good microbrew as much as anyone.) I doubt Jewel's voice improves through audience drinking, and Hiranya indicated Jewel prefers a drug- and alcohol-free event, right? 5) I say get the hall for the entire day so we can meet before the performance, hang out and talk. It might also give us a good opportunity to hammer out organization and project issues. Who knows, Jewel might feel up to hanging out for a while as well! Besides, many of us are doing heavy-duty cross-country travel, so let's make the most of it. 6) If Lenedra (sp?) selects the location, we may not be able to do #4 and #5. In that case, * nevermind *... 7) We hopefully get a phenomenal digital boot of the show, which we tree massively and get it in the hands of every list member who wants one. 8) A final suggestion: if you take responsibility for a part of JewelStock, don't try to run other things as well. Spread the responsibility around, and it will give you time to do your part well and enjoy the event with everyone else. Many thanks to all busting their butts on this, and thanks to Jewel and her inner circle for recognizing our committment to her rising star. See ya'll there! Attention Jewel Mailing list type folks! Did that work? Just wanted to see...Anyway...I just got through reading the thread on Jewel and smoking and I'm wicked happy! See...there are so few (dare I use the word) popular artists on the music scene who will admit to not smoking. In particular I'm talking about weed. With bands like Hole, Green Day, Cyprus Hill and others who have been connected to drug use and abuse dominating the charts these days, it's wonderfully refeshing to hear that *everyone* in "the biz" is not stoned off their mellons twenty-four hours a day. In my humble way, I just wanted to commend Jewel for not travelling that route that many people in the music industry are easily, and in some cases, tragically, lead down. I now have another reason to respect Jewel. Oh..and I heard she writes pretty good songs too.....KIDDING!! Aint; she the greatest? Oh well...I'll step down from the soapbox and let someone else get up here and flame me to the ends of the earth. Thanks for listening. And remember, it's just my opinion....respect it and I'll respect yours. Lee Hendrick) Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 22:02:35 -0700 Subject: Introduction Hey all, I just wanted to drop a quick note of introduction as a new subscriber of the Jewel mailing list; wouldn't want to be accused of being a lurker ;) I've been a fan for a while, but just now joined the list. After having been a part of it for only a few hours I can tell already that it is one of the most active I've ever joined, and full of people who truly care about Jewel and her music; it's a real pleasure to be here. I was lucky enough to catch her show last night at Java Joe's and, as always, was blown away. She said she had been surfing earlier in the day, and it looked like her nose got a bit sunburned, a nice welcome back to sunny San Diego as she appears to have had an incredably hectic schedule this past spring. It was good to keep track of her succeses and see her recieve the national recognition she deserves, but I've missed seeing her live since her last show in town with the Rugburns this winter. Unfortunately, this will probably be the smallest, most intimate venue we'll get to see her in for a long time, as I'm sure her popularty will only continue to grow. Well, I look forward to being a part of the list. Later, Lee _______________________________________________________________________ W.
