After reading several posts of people saying Jewel looked as if she would rather get hit in the head by a frisbee than yodel (ok, maybe not *that* bad) I re-watched my tape (respects to those who's VCR/TV went out) and I didn't get that impression at all. Jewel did show a slight hesitancy to yodel, but I attributed that to being nervous about the size of the crowd and their possible reaction to it. But after she had yodeled, I saw a smile on her face and it appeared like she even enjoyed doing it. Also, does anyone know if Jewel's guitar strap has any special significance? It looks like it may have been made in Alaska, perhaps by someone close to her? Finally, did anyone else notice Jay twirling a BLUE SHARPIE after Jewel's performance! I live in San Diego, and after her performance on Leno last night, KNSD channel 39 did a short story about Jewel. They showed some file footage of one of her concerts while they talked about "the home town girl" getting hit by the frisbee. It's nice to see that her name is getting alot of exposure, even if it had to be because some lame brain hit her with a frisbee. On another subject, can anyone tell me how to get on the tape tree ( or trees, i thought someone mentioned that their were 2 trees going) ? For what it's worth, i'm in favor of a regular t-shirt, not a ringer. I really like the idea of a photo of Jewel on the front, and the Jewel list address on the back, and preferably with a pocket on it. I mean, we all know it took a long time for Jewel to start catching on in the popular press, but some of the numbers her Atlantic A&R guy was mentioning were really scary. When I bought PoY, a few weeks after its release, her sales were a few hundred a week nationwide, and they hoped to see it sell 50,000 over its lifetime. Sales dropped steadily due to lack of exposure and airplay; WWSYS video was made on the cheap but didn't seem to be netting any additional attention. They even admitted that pulling WWSYS and substituting YWMFM with its higher-budget video was an error; apparently it went nowhere on the play lists, and Atlantic were considering dropping their attention and sending her back into the studio for a follow-up album. What happened? Talk show appearances, relentless touring, and a lot of people like us dragging their friends to shows and forcing them to buy the album. PoY's sales have been steadily upward since summer '95, and Atlantic continually revised their sales estimates higher until it became obvious that they had a delayed smash hit. But it was a near thing; if the poor girl hadn't toured herself half to death last summer, the album would have likely become a cutout and we would still be watching her at coffeehouses, moaning about how no one appreciates true talent. Instead of debating whether her new-found fame will ruin the concert experience :) The article is a fascinating look inside the record company process for one artist, and is well worth scrutinizing. There are some other tidbits too; she characterized her Peter Murphy support tour as a mistake on Atlantic's part, and was quoted as saying that she wanted to kill herself after every show. My first exposure to Jewel live was at the Peter Murphy show here in Indy last August, and she was astonishing! She won the goth crowd over handily, and when I talked to her after the show she was upbeat and appreciative of my compliments. Didn't seem morose or suicidal at all :) Seriously, my daughter and some of her friends are about as goth as you get locally, and they all appreciate Jewel's work; some more, some less, but that's to be expected. Her band is in fact covering two Jewel tunes at their upcoming premiere concert; 'nuff said. - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | Greg@gdunn.indy.navy.mil | knowledge is not wisdom; | | GregDunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | GregDunn@aol.com | Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: The AutoCAD Guy Date: Thu, 6 Jun 1996 11:06:36 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Jewel in Atlanta Okay, I finally got my pictures from the Cotton Club show back. As for the ringers, I don't particularly like them, but if that is what we vote for I will go with it. Only problem is the printer I am using doesn't keep shirts like that in stock. So someone is going to have to find a place wee can get a large quantity of them wholesale. I would guess that they will also add some price to the cost of the shirt. One last note on colors. It is easier (and thus cheaper) to print on lighter colored shirts. The printer showed me a nice light-tan, grey, blue and green all of which are looked very good. I am going to try to replicate them as best as I can in photoshop and put them at James's web page so you can get a good vote on the colors.
