All I knew before that was PoY, and although that album is part of Jewel, it is not equivalent to her. To scientificize it, Jewel = PoY + lots of other cool stuff As for me, I was thrilled to find out about these new facets of Jewel (yeah, I know it's a horribly un-original metaphor, but I *like* it :). The first time I listened to PoY (ran out and bought it after hearing WWSYS), I felt emotionally drained and was reluctant to put it in again for awhile. It was just SO sensitive. I mean, this was sort of like Capello and duff's Jewel road trip experience. I'm sure they enjoyed it immensely, but I bet they're not up for a repeat performance quite yet. Earlier, Sabra wrote: > Perhaps I am > wrong, but after seeing Jewel live and hearing her vulgarity, I became a > bit jaded about her as a person and had to turn to her work to believe > she was actually as "sensitive" as she claimed. I don't think it reflects negatively on me. For better or worse, Jewel is NOT Amy Grant. She's incredibly sweet and occasionally vulgar too. It never ceases to amaze me how she can be both, and I think that paradox fascinates me far more than a just a sweet little Jewel would. Unfortunately, what pleases me will not please everyone, and some people are bound to be disappointed. So Jewel has a choice: does she play only a part of herself to fulfill this wonderful persona that has been created, or does she choose to be all of herself, a real person with human flaws (whether these truly exist are debatable ;) I don't know what she'll choose, but with more exposure she'll have to choose something. Maybe she can find some sort of compromise, I don't know. But if not, I hope she picks the second option, because acting 24 hours a day, 365 days a year would surely be hell. It's hard enough to just be yourself. Maybe in the future though she could subtitle her albums as "Sensitive Album #2", or "Rude Album #3",... and fans would listen to the ones that filled their own personal needs. I, for one, will be the very poor, but very proud, owner of all of them (I can't wait for "Blues #12" and "A Tribute To Ella Fitzgerald" :). This also meant some of the more casual (and often ruder) fans leave after they get their songs, leaving the more serious (and hopefully more respectful) fans to enjoy the meat of the performance. Maybe Jewel has reached the stage where this is an option she should seriously consider. I know Jewel has said that the yodelling is a hard act to follow, but I seriously believe she can do it. The song she's been opening shows with, Tracy Chapman's "Behind the Wall" is an excellent candidate for a second song, although it's quite a change of pace. Three reasons I think this is a good idea: 1) Cutting the song from the show is not going to stop people from yelling at her to yodel. Starting with it will (although they might start hollering for WWSYS instead... but I don't think this is as likely) 2) As I previously mentioned, some of these rude people might leave early (maybe not right after the yodel, but they're less likely to stay until the end). 3) It's such a great and fun song and it really showcases her vocal ability. It would be a shame to cut out from her show. Steve - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Ito, | "Life is pain, Highness. Saying f--- you isn't as shocking as it used to be. I personally think f--- you (or other vulgarities) conveys a message that can't quite be said with "non-vulgar" words. Thus, I disagree when you say it is ten times more illuminating to get around base insults. Why must we immediately conclude that a message isn't worth as much if it uses four-letter words? Four-letter words have become part of our language, and they convey an emotion or attitude that we can't quite get across with "civil" words. Like you, I don't believe my words are gospel. I like to throw ideas out for discussion. I hope you don't take this personally. ed ------------------------------ From: jeffw (Jeff Wasilko) Date: Sat, 1 Jun 96 21:12:57 EDT Subject: Administrivia (smoe.org) As I mentioned earlier, the smoe.org domain is moving to a new internet provider.
