Jewel is so tired of people rudely hollering "Yodel" during even the softest ballads that shes going to start cutting it from the show. Hiranya ------------------------------ From: David Mocko Date: Sat, 1 Jun 1996 23:12:29 -0400 Subject: Jewel at WHFS in DC Just got back from the WHFS concert at RKF Stadium in Washington DC. Overall, I enjoyed the concert, but I will only comment about the Jewel "portion" of the concert. I got to RFK at 11:30 am, I looked in the program for the expected time for Jewel to take the stage. She wasn't listed at all, but I wasn't too worried because she was listed on the HFS web page as a performer, and it was mentioned on this list many times. I searched for the HFS booth to find exactly what time and which stage she would perform, so I would be sure to not miss it. At the booth, I asked two HFS workers at the same time. One said "she's not scheduled", the other said "3:45 special guest on the main stage" - they said this at the same time. I thanked the one guy for the slip, I got the impression they weren't supposed to give away the "surprise" in advance. Right after Everclear finished at 3:30, I snuck my way up toward the front of the stage. Many people were leaving for a break, so I got as close as 15 feet to the left of the center of the stage, only 3 people back. As we waited, more people crowded around, nearly everyone seemed to be under the impression that Cracker would be out soon (they weren't scheduled until 4:20). A few people started crowd-surfing. I saw Jewel peek out behind the black curtain, so I knew she was gonna be next. 5 minutes later, "Big Blue" came out, and it was quickly tuned. Jewel walked out to decent applause, commenting that she couldn't believe she was playing to that many people. She strummed her guitar a couple times, then sang "Behind the Wall". It held most people's attention in my area. She next began to sing "Pieces of You". People quickly lost interest, and few even began chanting for Cracker. Two lines into the third verse of PoY, a frisbee thrown out of the crowd hit Jewel moderately hard in the left forearm and chest as she sang. She seemed to take a second to decide what to do, then stopped, unplugged her guitar, and walked right off the stage. I was in such shock, I can't remember if she said anything, she probably muttered a quick "goodbye". She waited on the side of the stage long enough for her guitar to be packed away, then she was gone. I was a little disappointed no one from the radio station at least tried to admonish the guilty person, or at least publicly apologize to Jewel. I'm not upset at all she left, I feel bad that some genius hit her (ESPECIALLY during such a sensitive song). I want to apologize to her on behalf of DC area fans. When Cracker first came out 20 minutes later, Dave Lowery (the lead singer) said "to the person who threw that frisbee, who will save YOUR soul?" That being said, it probably wasn't a good idea for her to be out there in the first place. Especially up front, everyone was there to mosh and throw things at the bands. I suppose she should have been at the second stage, where a higher percentage of the people there would have been interested in hearing her sing. It didn't help that she followed a rockin band, and that the "surprise" aspect of her performance led everyone to get psyched up for Cracker (another rockin band). As for the performance, Jewel only had one guitar up on stage with her, I don't know how many more songs (if any) she would have sang. There was a keyboard and drum set also on stage, but it turned out to be set up for Cracker's performance. Finally, it took some cojones for Jewel to start her set with the songs she did. I'm sorry the crowd didn't behave for her. I'm not that upset I didn't get to hear her sing more, I saw her knockout performance at the 9:30 Club only 3 weeks ago, I was just upset that SHE got upset. I got a couple pictures of her singing. Once I can scan them, I'll share them with whoever wants them. Jewel played the WHFS radio festival saturday afternoon and her scheduled time slot got messed up. She was scheduled to play between Everclear and Cracker. She had a 50 minute slot. She came on as scheduled and played "Behind The Wall" which sounded really good, then she played 2/3 of the song "Pieces Of You". That's it. That's the set. They took her off stage 2/3 of the way through POY. I was extremely stunned. They did it all, I believe, just to give Cracker a longer set, which they got. That was it. She sang POY until half way through the faggot verse. I really was counting on hearing her play that 50 min set. I don't know what elseto say except that to top it all off, there were 60,000 talking over her playing. I've never been so frustrated in my life. I'm sorry if anyone else went and felt the disapointment that I felt. The set: Behind The Wall Pieces of You extremely saddend, Eric ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #235 ***************************
