Well, i live a few hours away in Richmond,VA. Just maybe i will be able to get some money for a ticket and some gas. And maybe i won't have to work at my new job. But i'll need info on the show, like where, when, how much, where to get tickets, and whatever else. Anyone who can help i'd really appreciate it. Thanks all! Well, i'm new here, to the whole Jewel thing. I don't even have PoY (ducking) so i was hoping to see her on the internet w/ that concert thing. No such luck, i missed it. So, i just checked out the web site to see what i could find anyhow. No video, stay tuned for rebroadcast, but you need an ISPN connection?!? hmmm, i've just got 28.8 bps... So i checked out the audio. First i had to upgrade my Real Audio to 2.0, and now i'm listening to something barely audible. And this song i just heard defiantly isn't Jewel. Now i hear something like 30's or 40's country. Not bad, i do like that stuff (i like all types of music), but what about Jewel??? now, what??? (sorry, i'm writing as listening) what is this, before show music?!? WOW, cool!! i just skipped about 1 1/2 hrs into it and the sound is better and it's that Ducan guy and Jewel. Too bad i don't have the time to listen to it all. :~( and, man, do i wish i could get some video at the moment!!!! Ok, i'll waste time writing to listen a bit. Hope you don't mind... :~) I've seen Jewel a few times on VH-1 (ah, man, hold on, more muck music, gotta fast forward...) Ahhh, ok, Sinjin, i get your listing, thanks!!! Now, then. I've heard one full jewel song in the past as well as bits here and there. Whenever i saw her i was like, 'wow man, she is really cool. i like her style, her voice, and of course her looks!' ;) , well, hey! ya'll want to know where to get her album? i haven't looked in stores around here, i don't shop at the secular music stores. I did recently join CDHQ, a cd music club, and as soon as i pay what i owe, i'm gonna get two more free cd's, one of which i'll choose as PoY. Yep, that's right. i ferget whether it's listed as 10 or 15 something. So ya'll can check there. if anyone's interested, i can write the exact price and address of the place later. Just say so... Man, i guess i'll have to find an excuse to get on the computer for a long time later, so i can listen to the concert. :~) Ya'll take care, and i hope you didn't mind the ramblings of a jewel appreciater wanting to hear more. BTW, when i first joined the list, i requested info about the innerchange and angel days tapes. Well, do to a puter prob, all the info got deleted, so i don't have it, nor who to ask for it, so if you see this, please be so kind as to send to me again. Thanks. I'm going to try it myself sometime in the near future. For those wondering how to download the .ram from Atlantic Record's Digital Arena, I think I may have stumbled on to the answer. While setting up to first listen to Jewel's concert I was practicing on Tori Amos' concert. Since I didn't have Real Audio yet (and I had eliminated .ram as a choice for all other audio programs) I got a prompt asking me what I want to do with it, so I chose save to my hard drive. Now I didn't record the whole concert, so I don't know if this works, but what I suggest is you disable Real Audio and try this for yourself (might take a chunk of memory though!). I'll let you know my results in a few days. As for the annoying lady who shows up to every Jewel concert drunk and constantly yells at her, I don't think we should be agitated with her, I think we should embrace her as our leader. She is the first true Jewel Groupie, doing what we all wish we could, following our beloved minstrel around the country on tour. All should pay due respect to the dedication and love of the annoying drunk lady, as she is an inspiration to Jewel fans across the globe. :) Finally, what's this I hear about the Del Mar Festival on June 29th, is Jewel going to be there??? /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ \ ***This is a test of*** / / J -THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SINJIN- R \ \ E U / / W "Besides, what would I say L \ \ E if I had you online..." A bit of a typing delay. All in all its a good review, there are a few research problems, that any music journalist should have been able to smooth out. Some errors: Blue Eye Liner = Rocker Girl Never Advertise Your Pink Fleshy Heart to a Carnivore = Carnivore or (Never Trust Your Pink Fleshy Heart to a) Carnivore Carnivore and Cleverness is a Disease were not named on the spot. The line from _Sometimes_It_Be_That_Way_ (not identified by our erstwhile reporter) should have probably been something like "And I'm sorry that Jesus died for my sins/And I swear to God it won't happen again." And he missed the pantomine and modern dance thing Jewel was doing after the lights were out and that people were lighting the OH with lighters and if the lights hadn't come back on I think she would have just kept plugging away anyway. :-) Did I miss anything? Well with out further adieu: :-) - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Toronto Sun Wednesday May 15, 1996 Jewel sparkles in Opera House Concert by Kieran Grant (Toronto Sun) You know a performer loves an audience when she's taking requests after just two songs. Not that the crowd of Jewel experts at the Opera House Monday had an problems asking. It seemed amazing that so many fans could be so familiar with the striking 21-year-old Alaskan folksinger's largely new repertoire of songs - -- calling out for their favourite obscurities and cheering each number. Fact is, they hadn't forgotten the songs from Jewel's "residency tour," which brought her to town five times last year. "I wish I could take you guys on the road with me," she said sounding entirely sincere. She was equally disarming when she made fun of her own good looks after the house lighting system shut down briefly. "My face is just a distraction," she deadpanned. "Let's see how good this sounds in the dark." She needn't have been so shy or cynical about her credentials. With her well-established fanbase on her side, Jewel moved gracefully through a set that included an a capella opener and an upbeat pop interlude she performed with her new quintet. It was only the band's sixth show together, and it showed, with Jewel sometimes playing down her multifaceted voice so as not to compete with the drums, bass and organ. Things got better on tracks like _Blue_Eye_Liner_ and _Race_Car_Driver_, and out-and-out rockers that featured Jewel on electric guitar. On her acoustic songs, Jewel compensated for her unremarkable -- but capable -- guitar work with soaring vocals. Full and warbling, breathy and girlish, piercing and near-operatic, throaty and bluesy -- Jewel hit all the notes. This was best exemplified on last year's semi-hit, _Who_Will_Save_You_Soul_ -- from her debut and so far only album, _Pieces_of_You_ -- which she played as an encore. The singer's almost undetectable rage simmering far below her friendly exterior added drama to dark somes like _Pieces_of_You_ and brighter tunes _Boy_Needs_A_Bike, _Never_Advertise_Your_Pink_Fleshy_Heart_To_A_Carnivore_, and _Cleverness_Is_A_Disease_, the latter two so new that Jewel named them on the sport. The show was also a refresher course in Jewel's fine turns of phrase - -- i.e., "Jesus died for my sins/Sorry, it won't happen again." Hey, any time. - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Oh, I missed the headline, yet another "Jewel Sparkles", "Jewel's a Gem" cliches. *sigh* :-) Happy Tuesday! James. P.S. On a related note it was really nice to finally meet Steve Ito (who seems to know pretty much everyone in the downtown area) at Tori last night. :-) Thanks, again! ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ From: Dean Date: Tue, 28 May 96 15:58:59 EST Subject: Re: Downloading RealAudio file On Tue, 28 May 1996 13:44:48 -0600 (MDT) you said: > >I havn't tried it on a PC yet, but I tried on the unix system here and >got nothing. Compare it to an exerpt from the half-witted sleazoid at The NY Daily News: .....Jewel hasn't yet found her own voice; in the course of a set, she echoed Rickie Lee Jones, Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Enya, Tammy Wynette, Stevie Nicks and Anita O'Day.... One is that you take your .WAV or .AIFF or whatever file you have in digital information and convert it into a .RAM file and just make that available for download. The other way is you can transmit the file "real time" over a network stream. When you send the file as a network stream, all that is sent to the browser is essentially a "shortcut" telling RealAudio where to download the real file from. Since your browser never sees the data, you can't download a "network stream" to your hard drive. Well, in theory you could do it, but I doubt it could be done with just a browser and the RealAudio player. I had no idea how to describe it. I said that it is sort of alternative but not really (I really have no idea what to call it) She asked me if she could borrow it and I reluctantly agreed. I told my sister what I think of her this weekend. Actually all I said was, "listen to the words on the third song very closely." Jewel said the rest for me. It's a Sunday afternoon in San Diego, and Jewel Kilcher, clad in a Western-style fringed suede jacket, has persuaded several stone-faced Mormons to let us into the garden of their temple, normally off-limits to all except those in good standing with the church. "My dad was a Mormon," she tells them, conveniently omitting the part about his excommunication. Despite this childhood fall from grace, Kilcher's haunting debut album, Pieces of You, reflects an intense yet secular spirituality. Cut from a tradition that includes Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, Kilcher is a young, nomadic sensitive with a social conscience and a guitar. Amid such tender odes as "You Were Meant for Me," she drops maudlin delicacies like "Adrian," the ballad of a brain-dead adolescent, and the title track's tirade against bigotry__"Do you hate him / 'Cause he's pieces of you?" On "Who Will Save Your Soul," Kilcher may have nicked Edie Brickell's chord progression, but her critique of ersatz salvation proves religion is more than the smile on a dog to her. Kilcher's only 21, but she's spent most of her years gigging and touring. After moving from Utah to Alaska, her parents soon began incorporating Kilcher into their nightclub act, a mix of yodeling, skits, and Alaskan-history films. At seven, Kilcher began her own yodeling career in earnest. Later, in Hawaii for a year of high school, Kilcher got heckled every day by members of the school's native majority until she unveiled her Alpine gift. "After a while, I couldn't eat lunch because I had to yodel so much. I started going, 'Hit me! I'm starving!' " After Hawaii, Kilcher moved back to Anchorage, then to Seward, Alaska. She abandoned classical vocal training and learned to play guitar so that she could street-sing her way across the country, eventually landing with her mother in San Diego. After years of scrawling poetry in her journal, everything converged, and she wrote her first song. Just three years later, she's denying rumors that Sean Penn, director of the "You Were Meant for Me" video, has captured her wild heart. Kilcher's performance style has taken a big old swerve toward country these days. She sounds less like her LP's mature folksinger and more like the snaggletoothed rural lass who enchants Mormons. "If you'd seen an earlier show, you'd say I was rock," Kilcher beams, bucking her image like a bronco. "People think I'm some kind of hippie. I don't even recycle." - -by James Hannaham Mike Connell ------------------------------ From: Truna@aol.com Date: Tue, 28 May 1996 22:02:21 -0400 Subject: carnivore words can somebody send me the word to carnivore? ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #225 ***************************
