Two albums, _Time for Mercy_ and a newish one called _Living Under June_, one single off it is called "Insensitive" but I think there's a newer one than that. Her music does nothing for me, personally. There are some other comments about her music on The Ectophiles Guide to Good Music. I haven't mentioned this here yet because we're still just working on the As Bs and Cs, but the Ectophiles' Guide is a collection of comments and reviews from the Ecto mailing list. It's a massive task and it's taking us a long time to put it together and not even the Jewel entry is ready yet, but if you want to take a look at what is ready, check out the genres listings--everyone on those lists has an extant page, with the exception of a couple of listings on the Goddesses list. Let's face it although the federalies story (and stories like that) are great, she must tell them 1,000 times a month. With all the touring she does. I mean it's new for some fans but she has to hear it every day, after all she's the one telling the story. This holds true for the Yodeling thing. It must be hard for her because Chime Bells is such a great show ender but to play it every day on year long tours has to get borring for her. But the response she gets is huge ( I for one love Chime Bells no matter how many times she plays it). This leaves her in a tough spot. I'm sure she wants to have a geat show ending song and still be able to get away from Chime Bells for awhile. I don't know if any of you guys are Too Much Joy fans but I am and it's the same case with them (no they don't yodel) they have a song called Theme Song. A TMJ show would not be the same with out a Theme Song ending but they get bored of it from time to time. Poor Jewel, Maybe Jewel could do Theme Song and TMJ could do Chime Bells (that would be kinda weird) Oh well enough of my babeling L8r-Gaspar ------------------------------ From: Anthony Amato Date: Tue, 21 May 1996 23:52:49 GMT Subject: RE: Save The Linoleum & Phyllis Barnaby Gets a Bra Yesterday I posted a message that said I found a place that had Save The Linoleum, unfortunately when I went there today it was gone. I saw the WWSYS video for the first time today (I don't watch MTV much, but I been flipping to to for the last few weeks hoping to catch this video). It was (unfortunately) on during the MTV Yack garbage. I was interested in what MTV viewers (mostly 13-19year olds) had to say about my favorite artist. The comments ranged from her looks to complaints that she was boring and some one writing lay Marilyn Manson (who popularity I take a sign of the apocalypse). Anyway this reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend after I had to drag him to the concert at the Paradise. He felt (although he was blown away by her live performance) that she did not have the makings of a mega-star. He had some good points WWSYS is probably the only song on POY with crossover ability in Boston it is played on Top40, Alternative, Modern Rock, and Adult Contemporary. Many people think of her as a folk artist (I've seen POY in the folk section of some stores), this may keep her out of the main stream. I don't think that her music in general has a wide appeal (it's to good). If she released Love Me Just Leave Me Alone with the full band (which rocked Saturday Night) I could see it being another big hit. However, all in all as evidenced by much of the crowd reaction (people talking during quiet songs, yelling until she yodels) I think popular music is not ready for an artist with the heart and soul of Jewel. It is kind of a double-edged sword for Jewel fans. I would love to see her become a huge superstar, but at the same time I would hate for her shows to become more crowded with obnoxious people who don't get it. Oh, well this post is getting long and you're probably getting bored reading it. So goodbye for now. pjk ps. Has does anyone in the Boston area know of a store which may have Jewel bootlegs. NEVER BUY BOOTLEGS!! NEVER EVER!! Bootlegs are meant to be traded, and the tape tress that are set up on this list are great for that purpose. Buying bootlegs is absolutely taboo..if you check out some of the recent posts on alt.music.dave-matthews, you'll see that people have been chewing out a company that has been advertising bootleg CD's of DMB. It is the musicians and the record companies that lose money when bootlegs are sold and bought. Since no money trades hands in trades, the only thing happening is free advertising (as Dave puts it). Background: DMB has always allowed taping, and people have (literally) hundreds upon hundreds of hours of boots of theirs. They used to allow patching off of the soundboard, which was kick ass, because you could get crispy tapes. Some guy started to press the soundboard recordings on to CD and sell them. Red Light Managment got very huffy puffy and said no more tapers. Dave literally pleaded with them to at least allow audience recordings, and they agreed. But, since there are no more SBD patches, the quality is in the B range, whereas SBD's were A's. Check on alt.music.bootlegs for lists, and go to http://www.tapetracker.com and look in the Trader Index for other bands. Most people are willing to help out newbies. If we do it via subscription, we may have to make it password protected where each subscriber gets a name and password, but hey, I think it would be for the better. We could even offer it cheaper if they go that route rather than us trying to print up the fanzine and mail it to them. In any case, I agree that we should definitely have a printer copy also because of the abundant amount of fans who don't have internet access at all, much less a computer with nice graphics and Netscape w/Acrobat Reader. As I stated before, I am more than willing to convert ANY document format (whatever the fanzine gets produced in) into Acrobat PDF format for such purposes. I myself tend to steer clear of conversations speculating about whether someone (anyone) is gay or not because I truly feel that unless they make it clear that they want people to know, it's none of my business. But even more than that, and maybe this is a dangerous thing to say on a fan-based mailing list, but when people start talking about non-musical aspects of Jewel's life, it seems to me they are treading the fine line between fandom and creepdom. The thing is, with famous people, it's really easy to get a false sense of intimacy about them, but we're really strangers to Jewel when it comes down to it. I mean, I met Jewel several times on her residency tour... it was hard *not* to meet her then... and the second time and every time after that she remembered me. But I'm not friends with Jewel, I can't even call myself an acquaintance. Maybe not a total stranger, but still if Jewel knew that I was speculating about her sex life, don't you think she would find it a teeny weeny bit creepy? I know I would! Speculation about sexual orientation, her sex life, and even tame things like what she was like in high school, who her current boyfriend is, what she likes to eat for breakfast, what hotel she stays at when she's in town, her exact height... well... while I think it is somewhat natural to be curious about these things when you are a big fan of an artist, these are the things that could really creep out an artist. I believe someone posed a similar question to Neile recently, I can't remember if it was here or on ecto. If a group of people got together to talk about Neile's book, and conversation started to turn to non-literary things like Neile's sexual orientation or whatever, wouldn't she find it quite creepy? (an interesting aside, Neile, for the longest time on ecto, I thought you were *male*... I'm so sorry!) I can't remember Neile's response, I'll have to let her respond to this one herself. I mean, most of these things are trivial, trivial things that you normally would be interested about only with your close friends. So what's the fascination with famous people? Most of these things have nothing to do with Jewel's music. Her sexual orientation and so on could have an impact, so it's a gray area there, but certainly sexual orientation is an INTENSELY personal thing, and unless someone is free and open about it, there really is no need for people to probe into it and speculate about it. I'm not saying that if you are one of the people who is wondering about Jewel's sexuality, that it automatically makes you a creep, it doesn't. But it certainly does lead in the direction to obsession, and the fine line between a big fan and a creep... In the end, when I post about stuff, I ask the question to myself... if Jewel knew I was posting this, what would she think? And if the word CREEP CREEP CREEP pops into my head, the delete button gets a minor workout. :-) Of course, this is just my opinion, it's my view on where to draw the line, for their certainly is a continuum of fandom, from mild interest to stalking-level interest, and where I draw the line for myself is different from a lot of other people. And indeed that line is just for myself. If other people cross that line a bit, I don't think they are creepy or anything. If they cross it a lot, well, that's different. Well, as usual, I've written a lot more on the topic than I intended. So I'll end of here, but the take-home message is that I don't think it's unreasonable to hold ourselves up to the standards of whether they would pass the "Jewel non-creepiness test." If Jewel might find it creepy, maybe we shouldn't be discussing it. I'm open to contrary opinions.
