By the time the show started there were about 400 people. The concert started about 25 minutes late, but Jewel seemed in good spirits. She asked what people wanted, and went right into Near You Always. She then told the story about washing her hair at Denny's and the two old women, and played a wonderful rendition of Deep Water. She told a story about opening for Dylan. He came down and asked her about Sometimes it be that Way, and she couldn't remember the words. Then she sang it and remembered all the words. Next she played Don't, and finished up with Who Will Save Your Soul. She then went to the back of the alcove she was performing in, sat down and seemed to be crying. This was as everyone was getting in line for autographs. She signed autographs for about ten minutes, and on her way out I was able to get her a gift. I learned later that night at the Paradise that someone had comitted suicide at the hotel where she was staying, which might explain her being shaken up. Hope to post a Paradise review/setlist soon. I simply was stating that she does have a song that MAY be concieved as being homosexual in conatation... similar to the belt thing. Good question: what in the h*ll is the significance behind a rainbow belt? Perhaps that just means she likes rainbows, eh? Or that she's a cheerful person. But what I really wanted to comment on is this: too many people make the mistaken implication that if you DARE wonder if a person is gay, it means you're a homophobe, or racist. Me, sure, I'm curious if Jewel is gay or not, but I'm also curious if she colors her hair, what kind of van she drives, what city she calls home, who her favorite novelist is, etc. It's TRIVIA, people! Just because you want to know something about one of your favorite artist, it doesn't mean you have ulterior motives for wanting to know! Get over it! If being homophobic is "wrong", then it's just as wrong to imply that someone is such just because they ask questions. Personally, I'm convinced Jewel is not homosexual. BI perhaps, but certainly not homosexual. All the devout lesbians that I know of have picked up masculine characteristics that give them away, and Jewel has none of these. Sure, there might be a whole slew of lesbians who don't have these characteristics, but I doubt it, IMO. Remember The Morning Song? I think she used the words "Boy, it's you they (her hands) love to hold..." For the record, I'm not a homophobe. Hell, I think Melissa E. is a stone fox! Instead of planning for a hand-to-hand > passed paper publication, let's use electronic distribution. While I think it's a really good idea to have the fanzine electronically available, I don't think it's the important part of the idea right now. The main reason is that for recognition purposes (by her record label, the press, etc.) it's important to have a print version readily available, and subscriptions are the only way to raise money for the necessary production costs. Going the paper route is important to Jewel's career--it's one thing for her to have a lot of computer-based fans, but there are many, many non-computerized music lovers out there who also want information about Jewel. Additionally, it's important that a fanzine be registered with the National Association of Fan Clubs--it will give Jewel a little added clout. If the magazine is only available electronically (or people can only find out about it that way) it really limits who has access. Even if non-computer fans find out about an electronic zine they're unlikely to have easy access to get a printed copy. Additionally, another electronic zine will be duplicating info that's already available electronically, through the well-developed Jewel home pages and through the mailing list archives. I can't see that an electronic zine would add all that much to this. Greg Dunn has produced a zine before and knows what's involved. He seems to be ready to take on doing the old-fashioned kind of fan magazine. I had already offered him my full support for whatever that's worth (I'm only a fan myself, though I do a lot of writing/editing/publishing experience). I would like to see us arrange some kind of cooperation between real life paper publishing in addition to what we already have and can produce electronically. It can only help to reach other Jewel fans who don't have the capabilities we do. Besides, I'm a book/magazine lover--I'd really like to have paper versions of things instead of my only access to them being squinting at a computer screen. I think expanding and communicating and reaching the largest fan base we can is what's important here. I kind of consider myself the godmother of this idea since I've been putting it forward. I'd really like to see us all fall behind the concept and help produce it. We have loads of talent here as we've already seen. Let's use put it to work to help Jewel and her fans everywhere. - --Neile ------------------------------ From: ANGEL GALINANES <75271.2740@CompuServe.COM> Date: 21 May 96 17:44:41 EDT Subject: I need un petit of help Hello , my fellow angels: I ordered the Radio Angels thing , and they told me some time ago that they had sent it back , but still it hasn't arrived . We get that classic of all Internet subjects: "Is 'Insert Name Here' Gay?" I don't CARE how sincere the question was when it was asked; this thing has become one of the young medium's least endearing cliches. And what do we care? I know a lot of us have met Miss Kilcher or had "the opportunity to" (grrr...), but once you get concerned over which direction Jewel's nether regions gravitate toward, you instantly get the word OBSESSIVE tattooed across your forehead, IN REVERSE, so you can see it for yourself in the mirror when you wake up each morning. The sexual orientation of Jewel Kilcher is of absolute zero concern to EVERYONE until you have an incontrovertible opportunity to ask her out. And trust me: not a single one of us will hold that position in Miss Kilcher's life. Kill the question, ignore all such questions in the future, and simply remove all interest from the subject. If anyone EVER asks Jewel this question, I hope she slaps that person across the face and storms out of the room. It's too bad I'm a Puritan Atheist; I'd make a great preacher. Albeit the kind people want to assassinate, but a great preacher nonetheless. OK, what else is going on? YODELING! Stop whenever you want, Miss Kilcher! The yodeling is cute and all, and "Chime Bells" is a beautiful song, but a lot of us can sense your discomfort when the time for "That Damn Song" approaches, and that makes the concert a less enjoyable experience for us as well. If you conclude the concert without "Chime Bells" and you hear a few boos as you walk backstage for the last time, those boos are coming from people whom you should not want as fans. There I go talking to thin air again. Of course, if she DOES stop, I won't be able to headbang anymore. Nevermind. Yodel-eh-HEE-tee! What else ... 1. The fanzine. I'll contribute, though I'm not sure just how good an idea it would be to have Carter Content in something like that. 2. "Jessica." Haven't heard the song. Wanna hear it. Sure, put it on the next album. 3. "House of Style." Missed it. It'll only be repeated 347 times. 4. I'm coming along with "I'm Sensitive." Now I sound like a guitarist with three fingers instead of one with two. 5. James Judd's photo page. Jesus, that's a LOT of pictures! Good job! 6. I listened to Jewel's half of the Digital Concert again, with better quality this time. Now that I've heard them a couple of times, I can say I love "Carnivore," "Marital Carnival," and "Fragile Flame." And I want to know who blows the whistle for "M.C." That's so cute! 7. The Return of Brett. He's cooled off. Good for him. I've renamed my car from "Christine" to "Lazarus." I drove it back to Santa Cruz and it was chipper as could be. Any bets on the next component to blow up? I guess we'll have to ask Hiranya the favor of letting Jewel know we all wish her a happy birthday, since I don't recall anyone collecting birthday wishes for this week's shows. So, since I'm gonna plunge back into college life for a few more days, I'll fire this off while I can, once again to thin air: *****-----*****-----*****-----***** Twenty-two is one of those numbers with no real meaning at all. You earned the privilege to drive six years before, the right to vote two years after that, and the right to legally plaster yourself just one year ago. Half of the important landmarks have already been passed; all you have to look forward to now is 25, when you can get a rental car without being charged that damn "Youthful Inexperience" fee. Your twenty-second birthday, however, may be a little weightier. You will celebrate May 23rd far from home, in the midst of a tour where your name towers over all others, grappling onto that arrow you fired years ago as it tears you from obscurity into fame. That's a bit to think about over cake and ice cream. Any advice I could offer on handling this massive quake in your life would not only be worthless, but frighteningly detrimental.
