I did bring a tape recorder but I pressed >"play" instead of "record" and missed everything before god's gift. >Words cannot exlpain how disappointed I was when I pressed play and >nothing came on. I must be brain dead. If anyone captured the whole I know exactly how you feel, Gerald! In fact a thread like this happened last summer, when Neile saw an amazing Jewel show and realized afterwards that her tape didn't work. This was also the one where Jewel publically endorsed Neile's book of poetry, so it was a double whammy for Neile (I won't point out Neile's mistake, but it was a typical example of one of the multitude of things that can go wrong)... and the very first Jewel show I ever saw, I taped... er... *tried* to tape... I realized after the show that the recorder was on "pause" the entire show. I was no taping newbie, either, I'd taped a considerable number of shows before that of other artists, I'd even made that particular mistake before! I was bummed because that Jewel tape would have been my only Jewel recording at that point, since her CD hadn't been released yet. Luckily, in those days she was doing her residency tours, where she played 4 weekly shows in each city; it was her first of 4 weekly shows in Toronto, so I was able to tape two shows in the next 3 weeks, one of which was the amazing show where she performed "Jessica" live. I almost got picked to be the guy who held Jewel's notebook for her as she sang (she asked the guy sitting beside me)... I remember feeling totally relieved she didn't pick me, because I'm sure one of the many record company types who were at that show would have noticed my microphone! >> 1) If you get frisked, you'll get it taken away... All that good money >> wasted... =( >There is only one sure way I know to get past the security. Put the >recorder where the sun don't shine. I know, its a hassle and >uncomfortable but when you get home, you can relive the your concert >experience again and again. I think its worth it. I've been frisked many times and they've never found my recorder. I used to frequent the bootleg newsgroup though and generally the story seems to be that they confiscate the recorder but you can get it back after the show, sans tape, if you recorded part of the show. At shows like Jewel's, they SELDOM frisk people, usually it's only at stadium-type shows that that happens. If you are afraid of that though, one trick that's worked with a lot of success for me is to stuff at the bottom of an overflowing backpack. Usually they take one look at the bulging thing, one look at the huge line behind me, and just ask... "got any alcohol or a camera in there?" (curiously, they don't often ask about recorders), they might shake it to see if it sloshes, but then just wave me through. *TWICE* they asked me to open it and show me what was inside, so I opened it and made a big show of moving around all the crap on the top, knowing full well the recorder was buried deep at the bottom. >the microcassete recorders. Then there are $200-400 tape recorders. >These are really bulky and need a separate microphone. Finally, there are You WANT one with a separate microphone. You can get cheap ones with remote mics, too. In Toronto you can get normal-size walkmans with remote stereo mics for between $50 - $300 Canadian, or about $30 - $225 US. Actually it doesn't matter if it's mono or stereo, most shows are mixed mono anyway. The reason you want a remote mic is that for any concert for optimal sound quality you want a direct, unobstructed line-of-sight between your mic and the nearest speaker. You could hold up your walkman with its built-in mic, but that's not exactly discreet! :-) My Aiwa gives decent results and you can pick up the kind I've got for $100 Canadian these days. The reason it handles loud sounds without much distortion is that there is an automatic sound levels circuit built into it. This has its advantages and drawbacks. One of the drawbacks is, when people cheer around you between songs, the levels drop way down, and you can't hear anything for about a second while the levels go back up. This is annoying for more quiet performers like Jewel, Sarah, Tori, etc. Even more annoying is if there is a loud part in a song followed by a quiet part. The quiet part will be inaudible for a second after the loud part. On the other hand it's nice not to be deafened by cheering around you when you're listening to your tapes. 10.5 hours to Jewel! To Dan, James M., and anyone else going to see Jewel today, as I said I'll be wearing my black sweatshirt (btw it's my "taping" shirt... it's good to wear black when you're recording a show, because then your mic, the wires, and so on, are virtually invisible against your clothes in a dark show.). It has a crest on the front that says "Boca Authentic." I'll be going to the Hard Rock Cafe beforehand if anyone wants to meet. Kim: I'm sorry I'm not done your tapes yet... the holdup was partly the fact that I've had a ton of exams to mark in the last couple of weeks, and partly due to the fact that I couldn't find a couple of my Jewel tapes! However, I have since found them and will dub them soon. Pls send me both your new e-mail address and snail-mail address. But she continues to amaze me. The Minneapolis show was absolutely fantastic. One of the most solid performances I've seen, with a great selection of songs. I thought the new band was a great addition, and really enjoyed how she split the show between solo acoustic, and full band numbers. I particularly liked the "country" version of The Morning Song. A lot of fun--especially for in concert--though I think the acoustic version is probably better for the album. I was particularly, particularly pleased that she played both Nicotine Love and His Pleasure is My Pain--two of my favorites. I'd given up hope of her playing any of her poem songs in concert anymore. The new songs (Cruise Control, Martial Carnival and Carnivore) were all great too. It was very strange to be seeing her in such a crowded venue outside of San Diego. The crowd was going wild. As much as I love seeing her in small intimate venues, I think those days are over. Jewel is going to be huge. So, I was thinking. I hate to see her get to the stage where she has to play stadiums, or wear herself out doing huge tours playing multiple nights at smaller clubs. But we all want to see her preform at least on a weekly basis, and hear all those new songs we know she can write. The solution? This may sound crazy, but I think it would work--maybe not right away, but when she does become a huge star (which means next week I guess). I think she should have her own weekly television show. She could have guests each week from all over the music world--all different types of music too, not just the latest cool alternative band. That way we could see her do duets with all kinds of people--B.B. King, Lena Horne, Chris Isaak, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Sting, The Rugburns, Tori Amos, P.J. Harvey, etc, etc. I think she has the kind of talent and personality that would make other performers love to play with her (although she can outsing almost everyone, she has a great ability to do backup singing in a way that makes the others sound even better than they normally do). In this way she could experiment with different styles, and she could perform a new solo song each week. There hasn't been a really great variety show in a long time--mainly because there hasn't been anyone with enough talent to host it. So what do you think? Anyone know any TV execs I could propose this to? Ok, maybe I'm crazy, but I think someone ought to seriously consider this! As good as your tapes may have come out, they would have come out better with a better recorder. The most important thing is the microphone (well, location and levels are important, too). I've had calendars with helicopters, jets, dogs, swimsuit models, and landscapes, and May always seems to get saddled with what, in my opinion, is the wimpiest helicopter, the least aerodynamic jet, the ugliest dog, the most garish swimsuit, and the most barren landscape. I believe I always wanted to be born in July or October. 4. Tomorrow: George Michael (finally!) and a new Jewel product. Problem is I'll need a ride to the record store.
