Kept seeing mysterious references to this Jewel person on the rust list last week, saw that Ben Keith produced her album, then discovered Friday pm she was playing First Avenue in Mpls that night, decided to go. Going to First Avenue turned out to be a little like setting out on a surgical strike: having decided at 7 PM to see an 8 PM show we raced through very heavy traffic downtown, scored a free street parking space just two blocks away, bought $10 tickets at the door, found the place (to our surprise) packed, and within minutes Jewel was on. We were... lucky. The woman could sing! It was like Cyndy Lauper meeting Emmylou Harris in Gyneth Paltrow's body, only with the lungs of an opera singer. She didn't even stop to take breaths. Also had guts: sang her first song a cappella. Also had lyrics: zero inhibitions, but charming as hell. Packed house, much fan adulation (great audience rapport), three encores. Best song (evidently unreleased?): Let's Go Back to Bed. She seemed to have as much fun as anyone in the crowd. Good show. Have to go buy the album now... ------------------------------ From: "James H. Judd" Date: Sun, 12 May 1996 21:17:17 -0500 Subject: evil thought > the high end recorders like DAT and Minidisc. You'll get fantastic sound > out of them but they'll cost you $600-800. Plus, you also need a plug in > micropohone. Hee hee, i just had an evil thought- i could buy a DAT and take it back after the concert to end all concerts, Jewel in Atlanta.... nah, couldn't do that. Although it's a thought..... is that ethical? Would jewel understand? I don't think i could do it- but why not? Help me, i'm losing my mind! :) James _________________________________________________________________________ juddjam@eng.auburn.edu http://www.eng.auburn.edu/~juddjam Computer Science Grad Student Network Services Web/Lab Guy ------------------------------ From: Truna@aol.com Date: Sun, 12 May 1996 22:44:45 -0400 Subject: Re: Birthday In a message dated 96-05-11 11:03:47 EDT, you write: >May 23rd. It's on Pieces of You, but it sounds very different when she doesn't have the band. I liked the version with the band, but I still think it works better as a solo acoustic number. A few more comments on the show: They didn't have any of the cowgirl shirts. All they had were t-shirts and hats with the word "Jewel" written on them. I was kind of disappointed, but I saved some money. I didn't get a copy of the show. I've thought about taping shows before, but I've never gotten any equipment to do it. Does Jewel every play "Need a Piece of Your Love Machine" anymore? I think that one could work well with a band. Also- I think that Jewel had the right idea in not putting Chime Bells on her CD. It would have been far to easy for people to just think of her as that yodelling chick, lending her more flash-in-the-pan success instead of longer lasting support. That's all I can remember at the moment. Still a great show. - -Aaron Walker Email address: awalker@macalstr.edu Home Page: http://www.nebula.net/~lazlo/ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #192 ***************************
