Downtown by A. J. Benza Jewel pulls a real rock at benefit Maybe the Marlon Brando/Larry King interview didn't broadcast in her home state of Alaska. Or maybe the Daily Sitka Sentinel never landed on her family's porch that day. Maybe she just had a point to make. Whatever the reason, there was red-hot pop singer Jewel standing onstage at last week's Michael awards-billed as the Oscars of fashion-and belting out her song "Pieces of You," which speaks of bashing in the brains of "fags," and of "Jews" being tight and wearing funny hats. Bad move considering the fashion/retail crowd to whom she was singing. "It's a shame if anybody thinks I'm a homophobe," Jewel told me. "I think that song's all about the absence of fear and ignorance. Say the words and they lose the strength they've been given." The evening's entertainment consultant, Tracy Peck, was even more surprised by the crowd's anger. "Jeez, I was going to bring Joan Osborne tonight, but I was afraid of offending Catholics. You just can't win. I love Jewel's song, but it might not have been the most appropriate song to sing at this event." Jewel, who told me her relationship with Sean Penn ended when he made a beeline back to Robin Wright, alluded to knowing her song choice might sour the Kosher wine at every table. "Well...I kinda couldn't resist getting a reaction." I understand Sean's affection toward her. Girls like Jewel are easy to fall in love with. It's defending their actions that's tough. " >Jewel: This is a funny thing to me...Whoever thinks I have a >solo acoustic album must be on crack cocaine! Hey! That didn't stop ME from noticing the variety on "PoY!" Anyway, I like the band. Perhaps what people are complaining about is the new interpretations of a few songs. The most notable changes I gleaned from the Bimbo's show affected "I'm Sensitive" and "Foolish Games." I thought the bongos and other accompaniment made "I'm Sensitive" a more complex and better song than the "PoY" version, and freeing Jewel from her guitar made the performance of "Foolish Games" far more sensuous than I had previously expected from Miss Kilcher. This is all moot; I already spilled my voluminous beans about new interpretations after the Letterman show. >About the Ethridge quality to her voice the first several >shows: Shes hoarse from the 4 days of constant rehearsals >with the band. It made her a little nervous. Did something bad happen on the bus from S.F. to L.A.? Everything seemed to go just fine in S.F., except for Jewel's momentary forgetfulness (and even then the band still got to play the song with her). >Big blue had just been repaired (she cracked the face of it during >that song where she bangs on it), there were some equipment problems. Does Ferrington give warranties on his products? I think I've fallen in love with "Big Blue," but if it's made out of balsa wood I'll reconsider my emotional attachment. I should have called it "Capacious Indigo" instead, then maybe I'd be less smitten. Has Jewel named the guitar yet, or will she wait a while to make sure the poor thing doesn't splinter into smithereens? Or does Miss Kilcher refrain from giving names to inanimate objects? I call my car (WAY unoriginally) "Christine" since I swear it wants to kill me. Then again, I identify with it, too (we're both white, German, and full of things that don't work properly). >Also, she just did a photo shoot Monday for Esquire magazine for >their '50 fabulous women' feature. Thank God she's not the Varga Girl. Then her album would go platinum in two days. So, Jewel is "fabulous" now, eh? Will the wonderful adjectives ever stop? Despite what the dorks at People say, Jewel should have earned another top-50 adjective. >Its a shopping-w-Jewel thing where the camera follows her >around while she shops with whomever they do that with. >Since its their 'Prom' edition and shes never been to a prom >she hopes it doesnt get silly. Bad Religion and Neil Young just played at the same time two blocks away from each other here in Santa Cruz tonight. I went to Bad Religion because Neil had to be sneaky with his tickets. Jewel won't cry when she gets the gold record, will she? I sure as hell would. OK, enough Hiranya fun. What have I done for you lately? Uh, nothing I guess. Kilcher Karma is still running my life, though the Ronald McDonald thing is making me uneasy. Blame Tom Proven for getting me on this damn McDonald's kick; he just HAD to unearth my Ronald fetish. Despite having no experience with the guitar, I attempted to learn "I'm Sensitive (Bongoless)" today. I actually got a simplified version down. Odd that I'd choose this song, considering the lyric that would render me starving should Jewel's theories catch on. Here's the announcement I placed on the apartment door: "Good news, friends! Now not only can you hear Carter screech his way through 'I'm Sensitive,' you can hear him completely ruin it on the guitar as well! Come one, come all!" Come on people, Jewel's on tour! She's out there right now singing her heart out for us, but from the lack of reviews I'm still afraid Ronald has her locked up in a McDonald's freezer somewhere in Nebraska alongside the Kangaroo Nuggets! We need reports! Other than from Hiranya! For all we know she could be Ronald McDonald in disguise! Oh God, for all I know *I* could be Ronald in disguise! AAAAAHHH!!! It's obvious whoever wrote this and/or feels the song is "bashing" gays or Jews hasn't listened to it. The song is actually bashing people who hate or at least come off as hating a specific group simply because that group isn't exactly like them. Remember the title of the song... "Pieces of You". Also remember the poignant lyrics "Do you hat him because he's pieces of you." This song isn't about hate at all, but about tolerance and those that have no tolerance. BTW: Since I'm neither gay nor Jewish, maybe my opinion means diddly here. :) Thanks, Dean Harris ------------------------------ From: Dean Date: Fri, 10 May 96 08:18:47 EST Subject: Re: Jewel cover songs? OK... most of you won't like this suggestion (I think). But anyway... we all know Jewel can sing any category of music she wants, she's just that damn good. So I was thinking I'd like to hear her sing a female version of Hank Williams' (not Jr) Hey Good Lookin'. Heck she has a great country sounding voice and I've never heard a female sing this song. OK, maybe I'm nuts. Actually, now that I think about it, Jewel could sing any song ever written and probably make it better than the original. How about Suicidal Tendencies' Institutionalized (sp). Maybe Lenny Kravits' Let Love Rule. Or yet another version of the old wedding favorite Rocky Top. Hell, I admit it. I'd buy any song that Jewel sang.
