This is my first post to the group after being on for a month or so. Anyways, i just saw jewel at the urban art bar show in Houston Texas, and all i can say is w0w. This was my first time seeing her live and i was much0 impressed...:) I got into her when i got the save the linoleum cd for 2 bucks at a cd show on a whim and then got PoY and got hooked. I have since video taped various performances like letterman, 120 mins etc till now and that was all the live performance i had to go on other then the few live tracks on save the linoleum. And after tonight, all I can say is they all pale in comparison. Ms. Kilcher came out and instantly had control of the room. She did a very short solo set..about 35-40 mins in all [the opener, a local band actually played longer but were also quite good] but was amazing for that period. She took the stage and within minutes had everyone laughing with her wit and charm. One example is right before performing Pieces of You at the beginning of the set, she said "this is a song i wrote about a girl who hates me. Paybacks are a motherfucker huh?" She then proceeeded to play and would occaisionally stop in the middle of a song to go off on a story or [to much applause] to tell certain audience members to "shut the fuck up" or "take your wine cooler and yakk somewhere else please lady". I dont remember what songs she performed in what order but here's the best i can recall [in no specific order] Pieces of You Nicotine Song [said this was very new] ?? Racecar Driver Who Will Save Your Soul Daddy Little Sister [was the only request she took] Angel Standing By Chimebells [or bell chimes? its 3 am and i am exhausted forgive me :)] There's 1 or 2 songs i am prob forgetting but i have class in 4 hours and have slept 8 hours in last 4 days so forgive me please. :) Anyways, jewel just plain kicked ass as she herself would say [hearing motherfucker come from her mouth still gives me goosebumps] and was the best 5 bucks on a concert i have ever spent i think. [if only i were 21+ i coulda got in for $1.07 since it was a radio promo show for 107.5 fm here..] One surprising note tho. After the show, the 3 friends i went with and i went for dinner. And after, on thew way home heard a song recorded from the show on the radio. needless to say we listened and enjoyed..the funny thing was, it was on 104.1 fm..which is a local station COMPETEING with 107.5 fm...which is the station that held the concert as a pa rt of their "weekly wednesday new music concert series". Odd, but hey, good music finds it's ways everywhere i suppose! Ok, enough rambling from a adrenaline filled guy after his first jewel show after waiting for 6 months to go to one. Take Care Everyone. Jewel's songs get through all of the scar tissue with the indicting "Who Will Save Your Soul", the discomfitting examinations of the title track ("They say he's a faggot, does it make you want to hurt him... are you afraid you're just like him. (sic)"), the Tori Amos-like intensity of "Foolish Heart" (sic). Some of the songs were recorded live at a coffeehouse, which adds an even more intimate patina. An auspicious debut from a true poet for a new generation! Recommended for those who enjoy the sharp blade of sadness and drink their coffee without sugar. Despite the couple of errors, a pretty good ltitle review. My answer came to me as I ejected my PoY tape from my car stereo and heard The Red Hot Chili Peppers on KLOS...I want to hear Jewel sing "Higher Ground" (which, by the way, the RHCP's re-recorded from a Stevie Wonder tune). Kinda reminds me of Tori's (not Spelling!) cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". On the 15th Jewel will tape for MTVs 'House of Style'. Its a shopping-w-Jewel thing where the camera follows her around while she shops with whomever they do that with. Since its their 'Prom' edition and shes never been to a prom she hopes it doesnt get silly. We had a MAJOR crash here and lost all kinds of Jewel stuff. My laptop is back up, but the main computers are still in the retrival clinic--doesnt look good. One of the big losses is ALL the newsletter stuff. So its back to the beginning probably.
