I was kinda surprised when I picked it up today and the saw the glam shot pic of her. It is the one that is surrounded by a brown frame on the top of one of the hompages. Well anyway, since she is coming to Cleveland I think they are promoting her a bit. So here goes the article for better or for worse: Studying got you down? Need a little pick me up? A little something to give you that kick in the ass you need to get out of bed every morning? Well I can't help you out too much there. But if you need some good mellow background tunes to study to, I think I have just the thing. Folk artist Jewel burst onto the scene late last year with her single "You Were Meant For Me." from her debut CD "Pieces of You." Her follow-up hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul?" has made an even stronger impact and has been getting steady radio play. Her sound has been described as neo-folksy and she's gotten lost of attention from the "alternative" scene. Whatever the sound she definetly has a strong folk sound. Jewel has a full, beautiful voice, though it borders on whiny sometimes. Only borders. Her lyrics are honest and edgy - definetly driven by a strong emotional side. Take, for example, her song "Daddy:" "you know sometimes I want to bash in your teeth, Daddy/ I'm gonna use your tongue as a stamp." It's a peppy little ditty for the kids. SHe's definitely an artist to keep an eye on. Another up an comer is Duncan Sheik His self-debut, "Duncan Sheik" (duh) makes a nice companion piece to Jewel. Sheik is more mellow and contemplative; a little on the somber side. There's a spiritual, intimate feel to his songs, with a hint of sadness. It's basicall a man, his acoustic guitar and his voice - and it works in a big, big way. After a while, the songs all start to blend together and sound the same. You just want to grab the guy and scream, "Snap out of it! Have a beer!" Then you listen to the lyrics and get wrapped up in it all over again. So if you're looking for good clean pop-fun, Jewel and Duncan Sheik won't satisfy you. I don't recommend either CD for the depressed. Either one could push you over the edge (literally) especially Sheik. But if you want beautiful, raw, honest sounds, keep you ears open and let the music flow. If you do want something poppy and fun play Sheiks CD on fast forward. It has a strong CHi-Chi's sound to it. You'll wnat to pull out the cha-cha's and do a little limbo. Enjoy -------- Well I never said it was a great article but I though you should know Barb Balogh the Entertainment editor gave POY a 4 out of 5 and Duncan Sheik a 3.5 out of 5 and if you want to bash her her email is bbalugh@phoenix.kent.edu Thanks to whomever read the whole thing. Well - it seems I've been published (in a way). That shot of Jewel with the surrounding frame is one of my creation. The image of Jewel of course comes from one of the promo photos by Michael Muller that appear on my web page, however the composition of the picture on the main page is mine - the frame is something I created in a graphics program I have. You'd think I'd get a free copy of the paper for the use of that wouldn't you? It's worth it if you're a "Jewel-ie". The article on Jewel is about half a page with a good picture of her laying in the back of her VW bus with her guitar. The article may have a little new info in it. 'People' made a mistake, though. Jewel's article wasn't includee in the 50 most beautiful section! It's the current edition of the 50 most beautiful people. BTW, Tori Amos was listed as one of those 50 this years. My bet is that by this time next year, after she gets bigger, Jewel will be there too. Love, Alice On Wed, 24 Apr 1996 Brian820@aol.com wrote: > > > Was Jewel ever in People magazine? Their Ocean By Tali Glikman I swam with the boys of the town I learned to jump and dive I ran and laughed and sang And they still remember my bathing suit And I played my guitar near the fire at night While the waves crashed deep and high I played my guitar till they slept on my shoulders And closed their eyes and sighed. We awoke in a dream where we swam Near the boowee and fish bit our toes playfully We danced underwater and talked, yes we talked And we played with the crabs dangerously And the boys looked at me awed I was someone, surprised I could laugh and be real and my hair was even a mess! I began to feed their images of girls putting lipstick on and having sex with them when they chose. I was someone to them, with a mind and a soul And a face of the ocean that does what it pleases. The boys lived on, and after that night, They loved girls more than ever. Iwas just a figment in there mind. So they didn't even love me, but inside I was their ocean. ------------------------------ From: CHAD FABER Date: Thu, 2 May 1996 18:08:52 -0400 (EDT) Subject: RE: internet concert on 5/16/96 To answer you question about the Jewel concert on 5/16/96: the concert is on 5/16/96 its a Thursday and it starts at 8:00pm EST.
