The very first time I heard Jewel, I pegged her for about my age (31), maybe a little older. For me though it was more her insight into the human condition. And on learning she was (at the time) a scant 20 years of age, I had trouble believing that someone so young could understand so much; have that much genuine wisdom. I think maybe the reason was that she began the song a lot slower than I'm used to, then when she sped up a little it sounded like she was rushing. Holy what an ending though! At first I thought she had made a mistake and made that note last a bit too long... but then she kept on going and my jaw hit the floor. Amazing. I've never seen Jewel play WWSYS like that before, I'm quite impressed and I can hardly wait for her show in Toronto. Wonder if the new take on the song was inspired by the new guitar? I keep hoping that she'll yodel at one of these shows though. I think it's about time Leno had her on his show again, don't you think? Dean typed: >I just thought I'd make a little observation. Someone mentioned it's because Jewel is a "solo" act, but that in itself doesn't work, because Jewel has played on late night TV with a band before (Conan's show), and because they have made "solo" artists play with bands before. For example, at the beginning of her Under the Pink tour, Tori Amos appeared on Letterman and played "Cornflake Girl" with Paul's band. I'm sure most of the people on this list know that at that time, Tori was about as "solo" as they come. But Paul & co. did a really good job, too, IMHO. The next time she appeared, she was an "emergency" fill-in for a guest who cancelled, and she was able to make the stipulation that she would come on the show, but only if she could play by herself (she played "Precious Things", if I remember correctly). So who knows? I wonder who decides these things, anyway? Steve P.S. I'm really starting to enjoy this list again, people! Ugh, that flame war a few weeks back was almost enough to make me quit the list... I just signed up on this crazy list last night, and already my mailbox is flooded. Anyway, I'm a student at Penn State, and Jewel gave a free concert here on Saturday. I could go on and on about how wonderful she is on stage, but you already know that. She played the whole show solo. Towards the end, she told the crowd she was playing Letterman on Monday, and had us vote on whether she should play solo or not. And as you saw, solo won! After the show, I hung around backstage and ended up getting my picture taken with her! Wow! I have an audio tape of the show--if anyone would like to trade for a tape of another concert, or can hook me up with one of her promo CDs, let me know. I'm seeing her again on May 22nd in Pittsburg at the Metropol--does anyone know if cameras and/or tape recorders are allowed inside? A few people here have mentioned that she seemed rushed and I remember looking at the clock and thinking 'Damn, Dave's gonna bump Jewel.' Dave does that quite a bit... bringing the musical act out at the very end of the show. It's got to be a little nerve racking when you're standing next to the curtain, ready to come out when some assistant producer type guy tells you, 'Hey, you only have 3 minutes 45 seconds to get thru your song.' Oh well, that's the way Dave's Big Show is run. And Dave is still the King of late night. :) Dean ------------------------------ From: "I'M NEVER ALONE, I'M ALONE ALL THE TIME" Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 15:05:27 CST Subject: [none] hello out there fellow jewel fans, i have just one question, i am looking at all these people's web sites with pictures of her and i was wondering where they got them, and does anyone have any that they would like to get rid of and one last thing is she coming to wisconsin at all????? sean www.geocities.com/Hollywood/2669 i'm never alone, i'm alone all the time ------------------------------ From: Sean Hooks Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 17:07:01 -0500 (EST) Subject: Jewel and Bruce Date: 23-Apr-1996 04:52pm EST From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: (201)-408-5581 TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Jewel and Bruce The comment that Jewel shares some traits with Bruce Springsteen is a very interesting one. Bruce is my favorite artist by far, I have many bootlegs including Roses and Broken Hearts which someone mentioned; and the comment that they share a certain kind of stage presence is right on the mark. That along with how they change their songs from how they sound on the album and vary their setlists a lot really jump out at me. It is these traits that have led many to call Springsteen the greatest live performer of all time(he also would do three and four hour shows, Jewel isn't at that level yet, her songs are too short and Springsteen is more about instrumentals then Jewel, though both place lyrics before beat in order of importance). It is what struck me most about Jewel seeing her for the first time, a couple weeks ago, her interaction with the audience. She genuinely tries to make a connection with people, something Springsteen does as well, citing the increasing amounts of distance and isolation in society. Jewel, in my opinion, prob'ly feels the same way and her honest, real, and caring personality manifests itself through this sort of heartfelt emotional response in dealing with an audience. She cares about her work(or art) and wants people to "get it." She doesn't just play a song and than pause and play another one, she lets you in on the secrets behind the songs, something that can only be obtained in the live setting. She and Bruce are also both rather liberal, Bruce was a known Reagan- basher in his shows(especially after Reagan and the other eighties republicana misinterpreted Born in the USA as a patriotic anthem instead of the bitter commentary about America's mistreatment of the Vietnam War and its veterans that the song was really about) and Jewel is becoming a known Dole and Buchanon hater. I think that is prob'ly where the similarites end. Pointing out their differences and comparing the two in that way is prbably pointless, seeing that their music is very difference. Their personas however, are very similar indeeed. Later, Sean Hooks "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true? I've never seen her live , anyway, but I thought she gave a great performance that will expand her audience even more than it already has. Her voice was beutiful and the lights and guitar added up to really lovely music atmosphere. What I am about to say does not in any way reflect my point of view toward Jewel or her music, today a friend of mine told me he watched the show and said " What a babe , I don't know about her cd and her music ,but I'd buy a poster any time". I was slightly angry and felt like smacking him , but one shouldn't resort to violence when another person offends you with an argument based on ignorance. I love Jewel , but evenmore than her beutiful physical attributes , I love her music. I should be mad with my friend , but he only presents aa teenage boy apreciation which is based more on hormones, and I also think that not only teenagers but a great majority of the male audience is gonna respond to her the same way my friend did. I think this is very sad cause it denotes the superficially physical world we are living in. I love Jewel and her music and I'm happy that she has found an audience of people , like you guys, that fully apreciates her passion. I thought her voice could have been a lot more powerful. I had a great time watching the rest of the show, because i knew she would be on later, but then i was disappointed when she did. It did seem a little weak, but when everyone was saying how great it was, i thought that maybe i just wasn't cut out to be a Jewel fan (she is outside my usual musical tastes, which tend to be a lot more alternative/harder). I have never heard her live, all i have heard is the released cd, so maybe i am just not used to it. All i had heard up until saturday was WWSYS from the video on mtv. When i got the album, the rest seemed so different i was devestated. But once i listened to it, i couldn't help but be awed. Even her letterman performance seemed much better the second time i watched it. I guess there is just no denying that she is an awesome artist with an unbelievably beautiful voice. She is (except for one occasion) 1000% better on stage. I was disappointed with the quality and choice of songs on her Atlantic CD. Atlantic started out trying to promote her using a young, cutesy-ish look, which belittles her true talent and insightful songs. I guess I tend to be a bit more critical of her, since I had many opportunities to hear her at the Innerchange and Wikiup Cafes in San Diego before she became nationally well-known. I get the feeling now that many times her concerts are governed by hidden influencers (ie. music industry people), which detracts from her appealing spontaneity and flow. It's interesting to see how the "industry" attempts to change music stars.
