Hey folks, Just finished watching Letterman. For those of you on the west coast, don't read this...you need to wait. It was nice to finally see her blue guitar. Are those supposed to be stars at the belly of the guitar? That thing is so beautifully rad! I loved how the blue wrapped around Jewel. The blue lights, the blue backdrop, the blue guitar, her blue shirt, her blue eyes! Lil' bluebell that Jewel! : ) My last thing...my mouth dropped when she held out "soul" at the end. No cracks or loss of key...reminded me for a moment of Ethridge when she sings "come" in "Come To My Window". Ok, that's it. Thanks for reading this. I feel like a Jewelhead now. I have to admit after hearing Mariah's songs 20 times a day, day after day, they become catchy, even tho' I wanted to puke the first time I heard. On the other hand, the FIRST time I heard Jewel, I looked (because it was on MTV, still don't hear her on the radio) to see who it was, & based on what I heard so far, I listened and I loved it. Mariah Carey does have a beautiful voice, but it's empty, just churning out those pop songs. Kathleen P.S. Jewel on Letterman was awesome!! I wish he'd saved time to chat with her a bit, though. Letterman behaved himself with Lunden and left Jewel with plenty of time to strut her stuff. By the way, David Letterman is the only other person I know of who will drink tabasco sauce straight. My breath will never be the same, but it sure entertains my friends. Now, try some Vietnamese fish sauce! Here we go: The song: "WWSYS." Jewel went solo. A brave choice, and one that worked out very well, as it always does. So I guess "Jewel With Band" will be held over as a surprise until the third. She sang the original lyrics to "WWSYS," and I never noticed until tonight that the version on the CD was not the same as that printed in the "POY" lyric sheet. Whooo-ee, did she pull off that note at the end! I thought her rendition of the song on the show was a little less risky than the CD and club performances, until that final note. Congratulations, Jewel, on pulling that off before an audience of millions. The guitar: "Big Blue." My guitar-playing friend said she liked the guitar a lot, but my dominant train of thought during the performance was: "Lord, that guitar is big." Guitar envy, I guess. The blue stage-lighting accentuated that guitar and Jewel's blouse very nicely, but it also fluxed her blond hair into silver a few times, which I found alternately hypnotic and disrupting. The skirt: Jesus Christ! I'm not sure I can summarize my reaction in any religiously non-denominational terms, but here's an attempt: "Jewel looked quite nice tonight." I haven't started crying yet, but I know it's coming. This marks the first time I've seen Miss Kilcher wear something other than pants (well, she typically wears a shirt and boots too, but you get the point). Whoops, I did see her in a dress on someone's on-line photo gallery, so I guess I just lied. Ahh, so what, I'm already booked for Hell anyway. Running theme of the night: Alaska. Probably the only thing dungeness crabs and Jewel have in common. Next stop: 120 Minutes. Then Bimbo's. I'm drinking an extra large quantity of water to prevent the growing threat that I'll spontaneously combust before that show. Bursting into flames during her performance may get her attention, but I'd rather hear the whole show first. Did anyone else notice that Jewel was allowed to play by herself? Usually on Dave's show, unless a band is bigger than life itself, Paul Schafer and the boys are playing with the musical act. It was quite nice to see that Jewel impressed them enough to be "allowed" to perform on her own... just Jewel and her Blue Guitar. And since I'm on an observation kick, Jewel looked smashing (what a nice 60's kinda word) in her skirt. What about the strange stance she took a few times, with her toes pointed in toward each other and her knees bent? I kinda liked it. :) Enough Brettesk comments on her looks. :) This was possibly the best performance I've seen of her doing WWSYS. It brought a hugh smile to my face when she held the note at the end. The amazing thing is I think she could have held it longer. I'm quite sure that someone was on the sides telling her to wrap it up. After all, when she was finished Dave didn't even have time to come out and shake her hand. He always does that after a musical act performs. I've ranted quite enough. We all know she's wonderful. You sure don't need me telling you that. I think it's obvious that that occurred since her shows, up until next week, have been solo performances, she's a solo artist. The Carson show used to be the same way. One of the ONLY acts I remember going totally solo on Carson was Dominique "The Singing Nun" (and boy oh boy am I showing my age now!!!) > i am sure that someone was on the sides telling her to wrap it up. I mean, it's great and all that she's attractive, but my goodness, it distracted me from her music. Did you see when she sat down at the end with Dave? Hmm. I haven't seen her in warm weather before- does she wear skirts/shorts alot? I guess i'm used to pants on her. Still a very nice performance. So how tall do you think her new guitar is? I'm betting 4 feet. ;) It sounds very nice, but doesn't it look a little large on her compared to her old one to anyone else besides me? I wonder if she got to decide what to wear last night, or if not, who did? (mom, show?) Well, aren't i the complainer today. Just feeling finicky, sorry.
