Any illegal activity referred to in the following rebuttal is, for the purposes of this conversation, completely fictional (that one goes to all you DEA and ATF agents out there). >OK Carter, from what I understand, being stoned is not the same as being >drunk, and actually as far as I'm concerned, pot does not stink any more >than cigarettes, cigars, cloves & especially pipes! They all smell pretty >bad... 1. Absosutely true: Being stoned is not the same as being drunk, including but not limited to the penalties involved in the activities. What I said was, "you can have just as much fun drunk as stoned" which, in my supplicatory opinion, is factual. Sorry if that sounds pejorative, but I really don't want to be remembered on this group as a dimwit or a contributor to the delinquency of minors. Actually I have MORE fun drunk, since I enjoy falling down a lot (there's a major difference: under the influence of the "species of flora," I couldn't even get up from the couch). Still, watching a friend try to hook up a VCR and a TV together while stoned will forever hold a place of honor in my Halls of Comedy. 2. The odiferousness of the paraphernalia in question I will admit is a matter of personal taste (or smell, in this case). I actually LOVE the smell of pipes, though pipes themselves taste pretty bad (having eaten a couple I consider myself an authority on such matters). Marijuana just smells to me like rotting African mammals. I grew up next to a cigar-smoking neighbor (man, that stench TRAVELS), so that Cancer Candy Bar doesn't make me gag, though it's by no means a favorite. I got a good impression of cloves from that yummy minty aftertaste they left on my lips, but I won't buy them just to have a lick. Finally, I think cigarettes smell good out of the carton, but after they meet the flame, forget it. I hope that clarifies my opinions on the issue, however ridiculous or uninformed they are. And as much fun as discussing my fictional criminal past has been, I'm ready to return to more innocent pastures. - --- Carter "Are Those Sirens I Hear?" I know, I know... we were just graced with her presence at Bogart's sometime in February. But I didn't know about her then. :) While I'm ranting, I've been trying to get some of my friends into Jewel. So far I'm not having much luck. I guess she's more for the highly intelectual crowd. :) Anyway, I have told them that she has a much beter voice and singing style than their current favorite female vocalist, Mariah Carrie (sp). They just laugh. I'm curious to know how many of you think that Mariah relies on the same thing over and over, this being her ability to hit a high note? I like some of Mariah's stuff, but I don't think she can hold a candle to Jewel in writing, performing and voice. And besides, she comes off as being highly arrogant, self appreciative and just plain uppity (i.e. stuck up). Deanster, (first of all I want to apoligize now for the length of this EMAIL, I can tell right now it's gonna be a long one). I am relatively new to the Jewel scene, but I agree that that Jewels' style and voice is better than Mariah (Who I still think is great). Jewel still needs some polish, but I think her potential is astonishing. In this business, many talented people don't fulfill their potential for many different reasons. If Jewel wishes to remain "who" she is now, and all the while not getting eaten up by the sharks in the business (who like to "change" you and your music to the way "they" see it going) she's gonna have to pretty much stay at the level of popularity that she is at now. If she does let the "sharks" get ahold of her, I just hope that she can stick to her guns, and do what SHE wants to do. If she can do that, I think her fame & popularity can and will SKYROCKET in the next year. She'll blow that Alanis Vinegrette (or what ever her name is) right out of the water. (I also think she can SKYROCKET if the sharks do take control, her voice is just too damn good, and if her career went the way the sharks want it, she'll still do great. I just hope she stays just the way she is) Jewel's voice simply amazes me. I like it the most like in "Angel Standing By". She reminds me of a young Nana Mouskouri (now I'm showing my age....pushing 40) when she sings like that. But I also very much love her voice(s) as in the VH1 Duets "Foolish Games". She used 3 or 4 different voices in that. The trouble is, the "Angel Standing By" kind of song/style/voice won't get much airplay on the "popular" radio stations. The "Who Will Save Your Soul" , "Foolish Games", "You Were Meant For Me" style songs whil get the airplay. (BTW, all I have to go on is her "Pieces of You" CD, but I've ordered 4 bootlegs from coffehouse days [can't wait], then I'm sure I'll really be hooked) Cybernetically yours, Mike C ------------------------------ From: "E.
