I am SO glad Jewel is finally coming back, but the big ol' Opera House is not exactly my favourite venue, ESPECIALLY for an artist like Jewel. And to think that her cancelled gig in Toronto a couple of months ago was going to be at the Horseshoe... Does this mean we will never again see Jewel in an intimate venue? And I'm not sure I'm prepared for Jewel with a band, either. I guess we'll see in a month. Thanks again for the timely info, Hiranya, and for reminding me why I'm on this list! Hi all, I have lots to say, & I'm a couple of days behind & haven't read today's messages, so here goes... First everyone was talking about Lauren Hutton's interview ..what channel is that show on, or is it syndicated? OK, with respect to Melissa Etheridge's Duets, I thought it was awesome. I like Etheridge, & her voice with Jewel's sounded great I thought. In fact, I thought the whole group harmonized great together. (Except Sophie B. Hawkins, whose voice nor musical style I do not like.) I just now got paid & can finally afford Jewel's CD - I can't wait!!! I have only heard "Who's gonna save your soul" & have to admit I loved it the first time I heard it, which does not happen to me often. She seems to be lyric-emphsis artist, & her voice really has personality." So many artists (male or female) seem to just be talented in one area - like lyrically, or their voice is great or they are strictly a performer. She seems to be all three, from what I've seen on TV & that one song (& video, of course). So maybe I really don't even have any room to be evaluating her talent, since I haven't been exposed to much... OK, miscellaneous stuff... thanks for the welcome, everyone. Good luck with your Jewel page Forrest. Thank you for the offer Ken - you will be receivin gmy 2 blank tapes soon, & I really appreciate it! She sings about smoking a cigarette in some of her songs, like Emily, which is probably why that person assumed she smoked. She's been known to tell a story of her and Steve Poltz being along for a ride with Mexican cops when they made a drug bust, and being given a pile of pot by the cops in the end. It could have been worse, imagine Jewel at the Warehouse! {Ick, shudder} Still the Opera House is really more suited for bands like Ned's Atomic Dustbin or something more rowdy. It may well have changed in the decade+ since I've been there, but the Paradise WAS a lovely club, relatively small, about the size of Wetlands here in NYC. Given how volatile the Boston club scene used to be, I find it hard to believe that it would be unchanged, but who knows--if you find out let me know; I had several wonderful nights there, most notably seeing REM after the (at the time) untitled first EP came out and Berlin. It used to be somewhere out by Boston College, on the Green Line, if memory serves. It was given to new acts on first tours and to local bands at the time. Perfect venue for an act like Jewel, I'd guess. It's a special Earthday concert that wjrr the local awesome station (101.1) is putting on. Originally they were supposed to close off a street and have it outside as they did last year (7 Mary Three, Letters to Cleo,...) but they didn't get the permit in time, so they moved it inside. There's about 5 or 6 other bands including Patti Rothberg (sp?), 3 pound thrill, dash rip rock, etc. Unfortunately they have yet to announce when tickets go on sale, but I'll post that info as soon as I know. The tickets, BTW, will be $5!!!!!! Taking in to account the other bands there, she'll probably (hopefully) be the first one on (doors open at 4 pm) and then go to a local coffee shop, keep your fingers crossed!!!! TDM speaks to fast, and Jewel was chewing gum and hopefully the errors are just mine. Jewel MuchWest Interview J = Jewel TDM = Terry David Mulligan TDM: Why did you get into the business? Isn't there a record company, isn't there a management company, aren't there people that really want you to be rich and famous and well known and have your music heard all over the world? J: Yes, I guess its not out of that drive. Its not... ...that's not () pushing us so much as... it's all of our dreams to be oding this. We want to do this every day the rest of our lives. And that's why, I mean, I'm not a big MTV-girl. I'm not a big hit kinda machine. I'm just out to tour the rest of my life and have an audience that'll stay loyal to my writing. I'm a songwriter, you know. TDM: Are you prepared to deal with the fact that you may become a hit machine? J: Its a hard thing to get used to. I mean, its a strange thing to go up ('round) the corner and see about yourself. Anonymity is something I prize. Silence is something I prize. SO its a definite sacrifice with the business. TDM: There's some songs that are really introspective and they speak a lot about you and [do] you look out there and wonder if those people are ready to listen to them? J: No, I mean, often times I think if you study your own hear, its the heart of everyone and its not that separate. We all have a fear of being without. We all want to be loved unconditionally. We want to know that we're basically good or decent. These things are kind of universal. I've played in front of Peter Murphy goth fans as well as in between the Ramones and Everclear as well as for Belly and Catherine Wheel, oh, Bob Dylan and crowd. So, you know I've been scared at first, but I realize that basically everyone is in the same boat. TDM: Is it a constant search then for you to find people... ...the songs to fit the audience. J: No. TDM: Do you let,...ah... this audience tonight your sharing with Edwin, obviously. Is it an easier gig for you to come in and play for people come come and see you specifically? J: Yeah. I can do more because you don't have as much of a roof over you. Sometimes its like selling cars when you're in front of someone else's crowd, cuz, you've got to hustle and woo 'em and hit 'em over the head. So, its a different kind of material. If its a crowd that will be quiet; if its really my crowd and they'll listen, and they come in with that kind of... ...silence, then I can just do a wide range of material from big bands stuff to all the (main/many) different kinds of stuff. And I have over 200 songs so there are sets you vary every night. TDM: Oh, yes. TDM: Are you comfortable with the visual? J: Yeah! I like visual a lot because I sing very visually. SO when I sing a ("badandootweee") its a shape I see when I sing it and it has a color tension to it. And so people don't ever get to see the movie in my head that I'm writing lyrics about. So when you do a video, they get to see it. I enjoy the medium a lot. TDM: What happened to the van by the way? Do you know? J: My friend has it. He's fixing it up. TDM: Cool!! J: Yeah, its kind of running again. TDM: Excellent! Excellent. J: Yeah. TDM: So (you) could be a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland... J: TDM: Have a good set tonight. J: Thanks a lot. TDM: Thanks. - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= If anyone has the rest of this please feel free to add it to this! This was the first time I saw the YWMFM video. Neat. I don't mind the newer version its not as sad. The original (YWMFM-classic?) hit home a bit too hard. Jewel is also the only performer other than Ofra Harnoy (cellist) that I've heard talk about music as colour shapes. Could be the classical training. Happy Monday!
