How do they react if they catch you? Looking to tape Jewel/Dylan. Most people use a Walkman-type recorder. Use a good quality tape. Walkmans are biased for normal, not high bias tape, but the machines don't have very good or flat frequency response to begin with, so I find a high-bias tape compensates for that and produces better results. Maxell XLII, TDK SA, Sony UX, etc. are good choices. Don't use metal-bias tape. Try to have an unobstructed path between you and the P.A. speaker, and point the microphone directly at a speaker, not necessarily the stage. The closer you are to the speaker, the better. I park myself directly in front of a speaker stack whenever possible, 6 feet away is great. At that distance you should aim the recorder high so it picks up the sound from the tweeters on top of the stack. Some recorders overload at such close range, but that's less of a problem with Jewel's acoustic style. All you can do is experiment. Use your best creativity to get the unit into the building. If they catch you at the door, you can try to tell them you hope to interview the artist after the show for your school newspaper or something. Once you're in, you probably won't have a problem, just be discrete. I got nabbed _once_, when a record rep spotted the LED Record light on my machine. I now cover that with a piece of electrical tape. Use new alkaline batteries if it's an important show. Make sure the tape is loaded in the right direction. Make sure your pause button is off when you start to record. Do a quick test before you go into the show. Wear a watch, and note the start time so you know when to flip the tape. Try to bring a 2nd tape in case the show runs long. These things all sound simplistic, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to screw one of them up. If you're shopping for an appropriate recorder, I like the quality of Aiwa. The Sonys I've seen overload easily. I've actually seen good results from a Radio Shack stereo unit. Radio Shack's stuff is inconsistent though, but they have a good return policy, so you can buy it and try it, and return it if it doesn't work out. If you're looking for pro quality, there are MiniDisc and DAT recorders on the market for $500+ that will give killer quality. Don't go for the microcassette machines, the quality sucks. An external mic is a nice option, but the built-in mic will usually do fine too. I use a stereo recorder. This isn't all that necessary since the sound at live shows is mixed in mono to begin with, but it can produce a better recording because the room reverberation and audience gets picked up in stereo, which recreates the scene a little better. Mic aiming becomes very critical if you're using a stereo recorder though. Hope that helps. If anyone wants to incorporate this into a FAQ, be my quest. I don't think anyone was offended.. you're here, you obviously like her.. and my message below isn't to say that "I'm right, and you're wrong", but just to contrast how she strikes me with what you posted.. your feelings are honest, and so are mine, so they must be 'right' in that sense.. just different.. Neile makes the salient point in her post, I think.. ultimately, it's JUST the music.. one advantage of instrumental music is that you skip much of the aggravation of 'meaning'... it's what the music makes you FEEL, that counts.. Hmmm.. kinda.. oh, not the part about understanding, but about what you said, a little. I don't think it's so much that she's not 'real and true' but just that her focus is different.. ok, like, Jewel is a paramedic, and Tori is surgeon... the surgeoon can't do much for you at the scene of the accident, and the paramedic can't help you on the table.. Just my take, from 'GEE', a whole 8 days of contrasting Jewel with Tori, but it seems to me that Jewel gives our souls 'emergency treatment'.. she splints and sutures us, helping us deal with the emotional garbage RIGHT NOW, by helping us see things a little differently.. Tori does that too, sometimes.. but Tori, being the surgeon, goes deeper.. she burrows down into our psyche, opening things up, getting to the root of WHY we feel what we feel, are what we are.. Jewel helps us look at ourselves and accept what we find.. Tori helps us look, and confront what we find.. both needed, but two entirely different things.. [granted, that's a real 'broad spectrum' analysis of their music.. based on albums, rather than songs.. POY makes me feel better, LE makes me understand better.. or something like that] jewel's music is like a banquet, everything layed out before us.. Tori's, more like a treasure hunt.. you'll find good things, but you'll have to look for them, work for them.. Tori's lyrics run 'deeper'.. I hesitate to put it that way, because it seems to imply that Tori's stuff is superiour.. perhaps, perhaps not.. Jewel and Tori are similar in that they both make you think.. but they make you think differently. the directions they guide are not the same.. ok.. maybe this.. Jewel is the friend who, when you're hurting, comes and puts her arms around you.. Tori's the friend who sits and talks, and listens, and helps you resolve things.. two different methods.. but both helpful, and needful.. I wouldn't want to give up one, to keep the other.. I love em both! "Brutally honest" doesn't necessarily equate with "good" (except perhaps in Tori's case! :D). Sometimes we don't need honesty so much as a tender hug.. Ultimately, though, Jewel is Jewel.. she does what she does, and each of us decides whether she fits in to our picture.. comparing her to Tori, is a bit like comparing Chopin with Mahler, or Pat Metheny with Miles Davis.. the genre might be similar, but the artists are unique to themselves.. and I think, not to judged from the perspective of another artist, but rather, does this persons art enrich me, and make my life a better place for me to be... Besides, she's young yet.. one album, after all.. and while I've not heard it, friends whose judgement I trust tell me that 'Y Kant Tori Read' isn't the most profound statement of musical expression, and certainly not on the same order as LE.. Of course, these are just my off the cuff opinions, and since they're mine, subject to change without notice.. Ok.. I'm ducked behind the computer desk.. ya'll can toss the rocks now! :D HIGs to all! The mainstream rock press already think Tori is too >self-indulgent. Perhaps.. I AM finding BFP to be something of a headache, but I can't say if that's bad or good.. ultimately, I think, though, that as long as Tori is satisfied with it, that's enough.. whether it ultimately 'means something' to me, or not, is beside the point.. She's 'given me' LE and UTP, after all.. how much can I expect from one person! (plus the fact that listening to BFP has been interrupted time and again, by Jewel, and Natalie's Tigerlily, which, like UTP, are rather more 'approachable', so... That's the whole of it... by analogy: I love reading Tori interviews.. the insight and perspective they give me on her as a person (and her oddly wonderful sense of humor!). But they don't really mean anything as far as her music is concerned.. they might perhaps give a bit more understanding as to the 'why' of a given song, but they don't really add anything to the 'what' of that song.. > >--Neile Yikes.. mostly tori content on the Jewel list.. suppose I'll have to balance that, by posting a mostly Jewel content on rmt-a! :D jim ------------------------------ From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 08:48:24 -0400 Subject: Intro/Tapes? He has connections to record some of the Dylan dates, but I personally would like to hear more of her full length shows. Jewel's song Emily, is to be included in the new Sean Penn film, Crossing Guard. However, a sountrack album for the movie will most likely not be released. The song is available on the You Were Meant for Me promo single. Jewel has a video for "Who Will Save Your Souls" and "You Were Meant for Me" that has appeared regularly on VH-1 and MTV. VH-1's CrossRoads program seems the best place to be able to catch Jewel videos in the US. She also appears regularly on MuchMusic in Canada. Jewel also appeared on VH-1's Duets special with Melissa Etheridge. Other guests included Paula Cole, Sophie B. Hawkins, and Joan Osborne. Jewel sang Foolish Games and Sleep While I Drive with Melissa, and the whole gang performed a cover of a Joan Armatrading song. She sings backing vocals on one track, My Old Lover's Mother's House on the Rugburn's album, "Taking the World by Donkey". V. Websites: Here are a few that will get you started.
