The first time I heard Jewel was on MTV and I instantly liked her music, sort of like the first time I heard the Beatles or even Hootie. I'd also like to say that the FAQ was very informative. I'd love to see her live (especially her and Dylan - too cool) but I doubt if she will be anywhere near Arkansas! I have not even heard her music on the radio here! Good grief - in the boonies I guess. Fixing to move to West Memphis area - maybe more luck there. Well, nice to meet ya'll. Even if she does seem the way you described ("I'm perfect, I love nature," etc) what's wrong with that? She may, at this point in her life, have a positive attitude about the world and life on this planet. You don't have to suffer or be negative to be a poet or songwriter. I'm not responding just for the sake of responding - this just happens to be the first letter I have found since I've been on this list for 2 days that I have felt an urge to respond to. Also, we're each entitled to our own opinion, and my attitude about life happens to be "up," and in fact I wouldn't mind if more people were like that! It might make the world more pleasant! You must like Jewel, Patty, or else why would you subscribe to this list? I'm interested to know what you do like about her. I think more than she fancies them up, she's playing off them, sometimes taking them seriously, sometimes undercutting them, and sometimes both, as in "I'm Sensitive." > she doesn't seem > real and true like some other brutally honest songwriters (example: tori amos) Well, she's doing something different. Tori is a confessional writer, and like the confessional poets, her subject is her own life. That seems by definitition "real and true". Jewel focuses her subject matter differently, and writes a lot of dramatic monologues, using someone else's voice. I don't think that because it's fictional her work is any less real or true, it's simply not confessional and self-exposing. That doesn't mean she's writing any less out of her own experience and her own psyche--just that autobiography isn't her only subject matter. I love Tori's music, but am not looking for any imitators of her confessional style--it's too easy to get it wrong and become totally self-indulgent. The mainstream rock press already think Tori is too self-indulgent. > In most of the articles i read she seemed very "im perfect, i love nature, > everybody is perfect and i will save the world" , she had that sort of > attitude. That's fine if all you want is good music but i think there > should be something concrete behind the music, like a heart. Jewel's heart is concretely behind her music. I'm surprised anyone can miss that--and that's where she's most vulnerable to this kind of assessment. Her message isn't as simplistic as it looks, just as her songs aren't. She certainly doesn't she herself as perfect, just that she wants to share a certain kind of attitude about life that she has been able to keep. She's young, but seems to be a very down-to-earth person. I'm sure that doesn't always come across in the media's portrayal of her because they like to focus on the "cute" aspects of her music and her life. Forget that and just listen to the songs. In the long run the biography and personality doesn't matter as much as the music, anyway. - --Neile ------------------------------ From: Steve Melisi Date: 9 Apr 1996 15:37:28 -0500 Subject: Re: dead man walking soundtr Mark is correct. Jewel did the song Emily for writer/director Sean Penn's The Crossing Guard, and there is no soundtrack. The story, for those of you who havent seen it, concerns Jack Nicholson wanting revenge on the man who was responsible for the death of his daughter Emily. I read/heard somewhere that Sean asked Jewel to do a song for the movie and she wrote Emily. Others on this list have commented on the similarity of Emily to Jessica. Undoubtedly she reworked Jessica to fit the movie plot. Fortunatley Emily and Jessica have the same number of syllables. - -steve ------------------------------ From: "James H. Does anyone have a feel for how long it should take? They said 6-8 weeks, but i can't imagine how it would take that long. Just a quick note about supporting the CDF, i don't. I wanted the video, and didn't feel right copying it, but don't like the CDF all that much. How can anyone be against the defense of children? Visit www.nra.org and take a look. Today on CNN it was reported with a nice pistol graphic that >5000 children were killed(involving a gun) in 95. Yah, if you consider individuals less than 20 years old children. I wonder how many "children" we have sent to war? How many were in defense of life? All the info including FBI figures/ages is there for you to consider with sources cited- i won't take up any more space here. I always wondered if the song tree-hugger may have been partially inspired by Jewel. The song is also on the Innerchange Days compilation that's floating around the list. They do (according to the J-card) The Man who's already gone,YWMFM(Il ike steve's voice on this, deifferent flavor to the song), Silver Lining,Food Stamp Love,Love Is a Rose (Neil Young song),and Daddy she's a goddess. I really like steve's influence on Jewel. She seems to have bunches more fun when they're together. I haven't caught them live, buit have heard similar things. The stories also indicate this transformation. Hope they tour together again. Wow, content! Jewel did perform with Steve Poltz, and, later in the show, Steve Poltz & Gregory Page at a benefit concert for the Inner Change coffeehouse. This was the place where she got started, but it has since succumbed to creditors. The place was packed that night, and to say the performance by the trio was magical would be a great understatement. It is one of my favorite songs. It is the first cut of side two of the "Rare Angels" privately-produced cassette. Everyone who is a Jewel fan loves this song. Jewel, however, has forgotten the song as she only performed it once or so. Jewel announced from the stage at a concert in San Diego that she does not remember the song anymore, and later said, she may try to relearn it. A while back, this list ran a survey whether we should lobby Jewel to re-learn the song and the results were mixed, mostly on the side of let the artist decide for herself. However, for a song that is never performed at shows, and is only on one cassette it is certainly popular. "Emily" was written for the film the "Crossing Guard." Only a few seconds of the song actually appeared in the final version of the film. It is on the 4-song promo CD that includes the alternate cut of "You Were Meant for Me" That CD is nicknamed "Phyllis Barnabee Gets a Bra." It was distributed to radio stations. Personally, I wish Jewel would re-learn "Jessica" and start performing it again. Below, from the Jewel Lyrics Archive, find the lyrics to both "Jessica" and "Emily" for your comparison. Well, there's another "oldtimer" gone. Not to complain, but the people who have been here for 6 months or more (over a year for some of us), are accustomed to a very different Jewel list than what has been happening lately. A little more intimate, a little more content-oriented, a lot more informative, a whole lot friendlier, and a lot less juvenile. Of course, when it started, it was composed mostly of people who already knew each other from ecto (a much more mature list in every sense of the word), so it had an advantage over most new mailing lists. We were used to chatting the way we do on ecto. But the Jewel list isn't ours anymore. I guess with Jewel's explosion of popularity it was just a matter of time before a whole new audience of Jewel afficionados swarmed the list, bringing with them a whole new set of agendas to discuss that are totally at odds with ours. Now her looks are just as important a topic for discussion as her music. Which is OK if that's what you guys want to discuss, the list belongs to all of us old and new, but I think you'll find a lot of the founding members are just not interested anymore. Which is a shame since many of them had so much to contribute, especially Neile and Neal and Jeff H., and the anonymous Rare Angels compiler who I notice is still around but doesn't post nearly as frequently as in the old days. I mourn the passing of the Jewel list of old. I don't think I'll be subscribed for much longer either, and I too will have to depend on ecto for my Jewel news.
