I think this can probably be attributed to her growing up surrounded by so much good, different, and varying music. She has said that she missed the pop music from her youth that most of us got jaded by. I think I find her music intriguing because her sensibility has a piece of mine and a lacks some other pieces of mine. I grew up with all kinds of music. Mom and Dad sang folk, blasted Zeppelin, Beatles, Eagles, and Motown (and all radio stations, rotating often); Mom danced ballet, so I got classical. Grandfather was Choir Director in the church. Point: I've gotten a wide range of influences and find my tastes to be anything and everything (there is little I can't find some redeeming value in). Perhaps Jewel was only exposed to a few different, and not "pop," types of music, and therefore her own style reflects this. I really love her ears. Things seem to be quieting down a *little* bit lately so hopefully this message won't be skipped over like I've done with most of the flame e-mails. :^) After I met her at the radio station (which I previously posted) I went to the Jewel concert last night and saw her perform for the first time in person. I can't think of a single word or phrase that would it justice, but the closest I can up with is monumental. She was wearing what the paper said were leather pants and a blue turtle-neck and was lovely as ever. I'm not even 16 yet (probably the youngest member of the list) but I was really touched by the show. I have to confess that I never really understood "Painters" before and never really liked it as much as I did her other songs but before she sang it last night, she explained it a little bit and now I'd have to say it's one of my favorite songs. She told a few stories about how songs came about etc. The crowd really went wild when she told about two women who made a snide remark when she was watshing her hair at Denny's and then Jewel said, "So this is for those women," and raised both her middle fingers as high as she could. I was sitting right by the speakers and the crowed still seemed (at that particular moment) louder than her singing. I also like the way she handled the crowd too. For instance someone at the back of the room yelled, "(Insert some fool's name here) loves you, Jewel!" She yelled back, "Hi, (guys name). You know, you're pretty easy!" Of course everyone cheered at that too. Her mom and dad were there too and her mom was using a flash camera. Jewel pointed out her mother on the front row and said, "You'll notice my mother is using a flash camera. Now I hate to make a public example of my mother but I ask that you *don't*use*a*flash*camera*!" She also sang a new song that she'd just written the day before but she didn't mention the name. I remember that it started out, "Inside this skin there's a face..." Well, this post is getting rather long, but I've gotta say that Jewel was my favorite musical artist before, but now that I've seen her in concert, it's like I'm hearing her songs for the first time all over again. I guess I understand them better. So far, this list is more organized and well, the best one I've ever seen. Do any of you remember Jewel's appearance on the Lauren Hutton show? She made a guest appearance and chatted with Hutton for almost thirty minutes or so. It was cool to see a candid interview. She talked a little about her past and sang a couple songs from "Pieces Of You". That's probably the instant where I fell in love with Jewel's music. She's very articulate and I remember telling a little about the stories behind many of the songs. The one that springs to mind is the one about "Daddy". I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but after listening to the story, I began listening to the song's meaning a little more and it became one of my favorites. And I know that any true Jewel fan has seen or heard the VH-1 Duets program where Jewel sang with Joan Osborne, Paula Cole, Sophie B. Hawkins, and Melissa Etheridge. That was a great show. I love Sophie and Joan almost as much as I love Jewel and it was super cool to see all of them perform together. Months of non-stop touring are finally paying off for the San Diego-based singer-songwriter. More than a year after the release of her debut album, "PIECES OF YOU," her video "Who Will Save You Soul" is being broadcast several times daily by MTV, and on April 13th she will open for none other than Bob Dylan on the first of five East Coast dates. In May, Jewel will cross the country yet again, this time headlining in herown right. I got this because I looked up Tori Amos' appearnce on MTV Online. I was going to try to get a question in about Jewel during that session. Sneaky. Anyway, there was till no tour info in Atlantics info. VH1 will be airing Duets again this Thursday night (8:00 PT) just in case anybody missed it. BTW, after watching the show again today, I remembered why after seeing it back in November I ran out almost immediately to get POY and have been hooked on Jewel's music ever since. Her performance of "Foolish Games" is so amazing and raw and heartfelt (I must admit I was slightly disappointed with the more subdued album version, though it's still a beautiful song). Besides her obvious musical talent, I was impressed by Jewel's vulnerability and the unique way she expresses herself. Like how she does that thing with her hand? You know...that, that twirly thing? And how when Melissa Etheridge is singing about being brilliant in the morning and being moved by Baroque how Jewel is sort of acting out the words or something in the background? There's something so endearingly uninhibited about the way she does that. Anyway, it's just very refreshing that unlike so many performers who take themselves so, so seriously, Jewel clearly has a sense of humor and is very comfortable with who she is. Jewel was born "Jewel", but in the late '80's she had her name legally changed to "Juel (with umlauts)" in honor of the best rock band of all time: Motley Crue (with umalauts)! All hail the Crue!!! Upon hearing the news that they had kicked out their charismatic and Oh-so-talented lead singer, Vince Neil, she returned to the original spelling of her name, out of disgust. She'd always idolized Vince. If you listen closely, you can hear signs of his influence in her music today. For example: In pieces of you... "She's an ugly girl..."
