I beg to differ with Jim's comment: Although it's true that there are more unattractive male artists who are successful, I think that might be because there are more solo male artists, period. Also, Kim Deal of The Breeders is quite unattractive-looking, and she's a hit. (I don't like The Breeders but plenty other people do) Jennifer Trynin had a hit with Cockamamie. Juliana Hatfield, with big features and a tomboy demeanor, made it to college-rock godhood. Meanwhile, photogenic but musically inferior males like Jamie Walters, NKOTB (remember?) and Take That are also very successful. Tanky. ................................................ . . . The sticker on the cover said "Featuring: Who Will Save Your Soul"... I really liked that idea... Then I read on... "Angel Standing By" stuck out because I really love angels... He said something to the effect of: so long as they get it, I don't care how they get it. As far as Jewel goes, I have had male friends who saw a picture and made an appearance comment. But any guy I know who then listens to the whole record, ended up as a fan. I dragged two guys I know to a coffeehouse show in Orlando and they both bought the disc thereafter. I had let female friends borrow the disc and I can think of three or four of them who then bought the disc upon me demanding for my copy back. What I'm saying is, as long as people get into it, let them get into it. I'm not condoning the argumentative style that has gone on the past couple days. I'm not in favor of Brett's way of expressing his opinion, but I'm not condemning him for it either. Just spread the music. Because at the end of the day, that's what matters. I bought the CD before I'd ever heard her music, or seen her. I had read several commentaries on her when she played in Boston back a couple of years ago. I didn't know much about her except her name, that she was an 'Alaskan folk singer', and whatever else the reviewer said about her music. A lot of it had to do with her name actually, she just sounded interesting to me. I don't feel any need to flame those who like her because she's attractive. My reasons for getting into her were just as superficial. I thought they were weak. I also didn't see them as fitting into the album, they were both sort of traditional folk story songs, versus the poem/pop songs on the album. However, when I first heard Painters live, I changed my way of thinking. Live, it's great, but I still don't get into the album version that much. I listen to them both now, but they are not my favorite tracks on the CD. Adrian is less powerful than Painters in my opinion, and I can't help laughing whenever I hear 'an unfortunate accident in a canoe'. ---------K e n---------- <> walden@bluefin.net http://www.bluefin.net/~wink "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Thu, 04 Apr 1996 18:19:48 -0500 (EST) Subject: eek I just got through a hundred or so messages, a good deal of which were devoted to the FLAMING of a someone to be anonymous (hee hee) I'll write everything I can in repsonse to what I read in this one mailing to be efficient (cut to the chase, dammit) For the record, I'm 18, I'm male, and I first heard Jewel (as did someone else who posted a long time ago) through CMJ New Music Magazine (not the Journal that is used by radio stations). They had WWSYS on the sampler cd and a small picture (tinted all green, or is it yellow? They do that with all the pictures they include with the sleeve for the cd. The picture is from the same shoot that the picture from the POY booklet that has Jewel with her hair pulled back and is wearing that button up shirt and that big-ass leather belt) I rilly liked the song, cause it sounded folkish (almost countryish, I thought) and she had a nice voice, and I prefer women vocalists anyways. I thought she was quite attractive in the picture. I saw and taped her first appearance on Conan in May and thought she was gorgeous and had an awesome voice and a sparkly guitar. I was hooked. It took me a long time to track down the cd; when I got it and saw the pictures, I thought "ooh, she's cute" (no not like a puppy dog; like one of my best friends who is attractive and weird and normal) I think the pics of her suspended in the air (trampoline?) added to the "cuteness" factor because it just seemed like a fun and childlike (not childish) way to be photographed. Anyways, It took me quite a number of listenings to like the album, but it finally got through my thick skull. I think I stuck with it because of the few songs that I liked and the Conan performance. Seeing the pictures on the web, her other tv performances (when I saw the Oz performance, I was at a friends house and I was the only one watching it, while others were talking about college; I was teased by my friends about how I was just watching her cause she was attractive) dman this is a boring post. shut up Paul and talk about something else. Quickly: I like Jewel because she has excellent songs, and because she is very attractive, inside and out (as far as I know. But we are not ready to believe that she is Belzeebub. at least, not yet) Seeing her in concert, I nearly drooled because I had been to the dentist and had my mouth numbed. No! I mean, I was stupefied by her performance and appearance. Brett should have been more diplomatic with his post, and a lot of the flames could have been better worded. I wanna be updated on the concerts as they happen on the east coast, too! But you are on the east coast. In fact, you're twenty minutes from Springfield. Yes but I don't want to spend $25 to see Jewel open for Bob Dylan. I have nothing against or for Bob Dylan. He just don't do it fer me. Yay! The O's won again. Three and zero and on the way to the World Series. Hey Kim, couldja give the names of the musicians whose lyrics ya use in yer sigs? I wanna know who they are. I recognized the Sarah bit. Hey Steve, you have an X-Philes group? What's it like? Do you guys stalk Gillian Anderson and Dave Duchovny? You do? Cool. ACtually, have youy checked out the TV Guide this week. All the pictures have DD and GA hugging. Kinda odd. Nice info on the show. Ha-ha, someone was listening to Cathy Dennis' Too Many Walls. Yay. I loved and still like that song (occasionaly) Weeeeeeeeee Everyone has opinions. Express them as your own. Of course, my opinions are the best and everyone should share mine. And I think that jewel and Tori would not fight; they would talk about angels and fairies and dance around on a tramampoline...trabopoline... trapabampo...a bouncy thing. Then ME would come over and kick their butts if she were in a bad mood. You know, two nights ago, I dreamed that I went into a store, and where they had Jewel stuff, they had three promo/maxi singles of different stuff by her and I bought em. When I woke up, I thought that I had really bought them and I was worried that I had overdrawn my checking account. I was depressed when I realized that I didn't have the cds. Then again, I dreamt last night that my family was a bunch of terrorist- thieves:) I don't believe that Jewel is a great guitarist. I think she's good, not great. And I don't think that the guitar is a tough instrument to pick up, especially if you have some musical background as Jewel does. This is evidenced by the great number of kids in high school and college teaching themselves to play. And, I have only experimented with the guitar maybe 10-15 times in one year, and I could pretty much play the stuff from POY and StL as I listened to them (though I had to listen to the tracks a couple times and I couldn't do all the finger picking and capo stuff). She does pretty simple chords and stuff. But she does it well. By the by, I'm a cellist and have been playing since I was 5, so I have a point of comparison. Sort of. That's all, peoples Paul "dem Bawlmore Oreos are goan awltha way, hon" Kim pronounce it phonetically. I've got a few things to say, so I'm just gonna dump them all into one message. First of all, is anyone here from the Atlanta area? She saw tons of people singing WWSYS or YWMFM while they were walking down the street, and every restaurant she went to had all 14 songs from POY in the jukebox. Secondly, does anyone know when the dates for the May tour are going to be available? Thirdly, what is Lauren Hutton? A TV show? A Radio show? Is it a local thing? By the way, to whoever asked: I'm a 16 year old guy who first heard her when I saw the last thirty seconds of WWSYS on MTV back in August. Bought the CD that day. And to whoever mentioned "Near You Always," I totally agree. I've listened to that song countless times, and I'm not even remotely bored with it. I'm also suprised that it's never ben spoken of on the list.
