Sheesh, at one time I had a picture of Patti Smith hanging on the wall, right next to a poster of the Heineken (sp? can't remember, don't drink anymore!) girl. Now Patti obviously wasn't up there for her stunning good looks.. Here's a thought to perhaps spark discussion.. think about the female artists you know of.. and consider them in terms of appearance.. then do the same with the male artists... it does seem to me that appearance seems to have far less impact with male artists.. plenty of unattractive guys making it in the record business, but darn few females, it seems to me.. Does Brett have cousins working in the music biz, perhaps? If anything, her sense and understanding of rythym is far superior to most.. anybody can sing a simple lyric line in time with a musical beat.. but her 'poems with a guitar' as you call them, move well beyond that... neither simple nor easy to execute WELL! Her lyrical execution is exquisitely timed.. Sheesh.. Me, I'm just blown away by this girl... for a long time, for me, it's been Tori, then a large bunch just behind her like Natalie, Sarah, Celine, and others, who affect me musically and emotionally, but not so much intellectually, as Tori does, and then all the rest.. and Jewel jumped past them all, snuggling right in beside Tori.. and I only picked Pieces of You up two days ago, on a recommendation from a friend.. She's evoked rememberances of some exceptional artists... Croce, Simon & Garfunkel (listen to Little Sister, and then their 'For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her'), Rickie Lee Jones, Suzanne Vega, Allison Krause... NOT in a derivative sense, at all.. she's just so diverse and incredibly capable.. Now, as for HOT.. yeah, she's pretty, and sexy, and cute as all get out.. gee, so's Samantha Fox... but I don't listen to HER! For my money, Jewel has far more in common with Patti Smith and Janis... her artistic talents are like unto theirs... Now, I'm not saying that recognizing or acknowledging her attractiveness is necessarily wrong, because it's not.. but let's not be so shallow as to say that's the only reason you like her.. sheesh "Gee honey, I like your boobs, but DON'T TALK!" DUH! Once, on a lark, I went through the cutouts in a large record store (the vinyl variety, this was perhaps 14 years ago) that carried a lot of imports and alternative stuff.. Just grabbing the pretty ones.. I walked out with about 90 records (ranging from .99 to 3.99).. out of all of those, I ended up with like 8 albums I really liked, and a few others that were more or less listenable.. considering that I dropped over $300 that day, beauty is a rather expensive way to select artists... And gee.. I'm a 39 year old right-wing-fundementalist-christian-arch-conservative, and your remarks bugged me! We went to the concert having missed out on that before concert meeting her stuff that you'all talk about... and as soon as she started to sing...well, it was magic. i soon found myself in front leaning on the edge of the stage (i started out in the very back) My friend was just as impressed with the talent and immediately borrowed my CD.... so that's how i became hooked on Jewel... she's beautiful i give that to who ever brought up this whole topic of beauty. but she is so much more. i think her beauty is a combination of the appearance and of the music or soul. also, i'm confused about how me asking why Jewel sometimes take the male persona in a song, became a discussion of Jewel being sexist... what happend to Hiranya???? if i were them i would give up on us..... by the way, any concert information?? I think everyone here has heard of pearljam, and a few of us are fans. Vedder often takes up the female role(Daughter is a perfect example). Does it make him sexist that he wrote a song about an abused girl? A lot of the time, a songwriter is inspired by events in the media, or their lives, which happened to a member of the opposite sex. Sometimes the best way to convey a message is to take the role of that person, and sing of thair feelings, rather than the role of an outsider, and just sing of the facts and rumors. I got about 30 messages asking for details about the concert, so i thought i'd justpost it here for all to see... Anyway, the specifics aren't out yet, but as soon as I know the time Jewel comes on, I will pass it along. Movin On is an all day event, there's games, food and music. Movin On is like a"good-bye" party for all us seniors here at Penn State. Like I said before, its outdoors on a huge lawn and there are no tickets, no seats, nothing. You come with a blanket and some munchies and some sunglasses and sit outside and enjoy a day of fun in the sun with friends. Most people wont even be standing up until Buffalo Tom comes on, so all of us Jewel fans will be able to get down in the front row or two. I will warn everyone that is coming down, however, that parking is a bitch around here. So far i have directions requested from NJ, Rochester, and around Baltimore. I will email everyone privately in the coming week with directions. A few people asked who else was playing... The first band ( i forget their name) is a local Christian Heavy Metal band that recently won a battle of the bands contest. I hear they are pretty good, but I most likely will not be sober enough to make it there to here them. The second band is called Roots (NOT RUSTED ROOT!!) and they are a small ska band from Erie, PA. There might be one more band before Jewel goes on, but its not confirmed yet. Then Jewel goes on. Then Buffalo Tom. The headliner usually goes on at dusk. I figure Jewel will be on around 3-4pm. FYI, anyone who comes down will probably get to meet Jewel. The stage is set up in one corner of the lawn, and there really is nowhere for Jewel to hide. When Belly was here 2 years ago, Tanya Donnelly was walking around the lawn playing games and handing out free CDs. I got her autograph, so I strongly recommend those who are planning on seeing the show to bring a pen and your PoY or StL Cd cover. Thats all i have for now... sorry this is so long.... I have heard plenty of songs that are not on this album, they make me very hopeful for the next one. "Angel needs a ride" and "Life's a big mystery show" are some of my favorites that were not included on the album.
