Jokes aside, here's a serious musical question. How can you tell if a person'a music is "honest"? Jewel can write a good song with a tragic story about a boy named "Adrian" whom she created in her mind. Is that "dishonest"? Alanis Morissette (I'm sick and tired of hearing her accused as being a "fake"...what do you mean by "fake"?) can write a song about (not-so-well constructed) ironies...is that "mendacious"? I have a problem with people starting to point fingers and saying that a certain singer/band is "honest" while another, critically slighted artist is "fake". Music defies these definitions. A person should have the right to switch musical styles, create song stories, sing/write songs with a detached attitude, etc. I, for one, wrote an anti-war song, never having experienced war myself. It doesn't prevent me from feeling the emotions war may have on me generated from just reading and hearing about it, does it? What does everyone else think? Interesting point. But I have to defend classification as a practice here -- to introduce someone to a new artist's music, it's very often useful to classify. Tell someone who's never heard Jewel that "she has no category" or to "see for yourself" will NOT convince that person Jewel is worthwhile. When I introduced Taste Of Joy to a friend and Heather Nova to another, I had to say "guitar pop" and "folk-pop" because if I'd said "heavy metal", those two friends woulda been scared off. Categorizing has its merits. > p.s. does anyone think of Elvis when they see and hear Chris > Isaak? My thoughts on The Wizard of Oz: Refreshing, entertaining and quite clever. Nathan Lane was masterful with his performance of the Lion (Currently starring with Robin Williams in "The BirdCage"). > This was the show where Toto the dog was played by a child > with no makeup or costume standing upright and saying Arf! > Arf! at inopportune moments. Total thumbs down to a stinker > of a show. After the song 'Jitter Bug' Toto comes in front of Jewel and barks. Jewel at this moment is in the arms of her dance partner receiving applause. Notice Jewel's response, she looks down at Toto. This stunned me! Even though Jewel knew this was going to happen, rehearsed it at least a dozen times....and during her moment of accolade...she turned her attention to this voice. Maybe an insight to her everyday personality. On the subject of the song "Jitter Bug", Jewel set me up with this. At the start of the song she gave the impression of this frighted, vulnerable girl. She then proceeded to knock my socks off with her powerful voice. When she mimics an instrument during the song, I think my VCR tape is worn out from all the rewinding I did to hear it over and over again. During this one song...Jewel displays vulnerability and caring...combined with this intense presence of strength with her voice. Unique qualities in an actress. The Wizard of Oz in Concert was my first exposer to Jewel. Needless to say I was impressed by her performance. Two thump up.
