I just got back from Tower! She sang for about 30 minutes, and then she signed autographs. During the show, she said something about her and steve poltz in the middle of a drug bust. it was pretty funny. I finally got to talk to her!!! (for about 30 seconds) i was wearing the cowgirl shirt, and she said, "hey, cool shirt!" anyways, it was a blast. that makes it 3 performances that i've seen. she signed my STL CD. To anybody who didn't catch Jewel on KROQ (in L.A.) yesterday morning, I just thought I'd pass along some mental notes I took during the interview she did. I would have liked to have taped it for you all, but unfortunately, I was in my car driving to work. Almost immediately after the two DJs introduced Jewel, she started things off by asking each of them which they would rather be: a fish or a star. She told them it's a question she's been asking a lot of people. She seemed genuinely interested in hearing what they had to say. She mentioned that she would be going to San Diego tonight and then flying to Alaska tomorrow. She said that at $800 a pop, she can't afford to buy very many plane tickets back home. She performed three songs--"Fat Boy" (at least that's what I think it's called--it's the one which she prefaces with the story about the boy she knew who killed himself), "WWSYS" (in place of the line "...we call religion our friend," she sang "...we call Buchanon our friend") and "Race Car Driver" (which she introduced by saying that most people who haven't seen her perform think of her as being an ultra-serious person, whereas in fact her music has a lot of humor in it). Of course, all three songs were performed brilliantly. She talked about the days back when she lived in her car. She mentioned that her first home on wheels was a Datsun 510 and that she later moved on to a VW van. I believe she currently has a Volvo. She said that growing up she didn't have much access to radio, and for that reason she's not familiar with a lot of well-known musical artists. She told a very cute story about how she was chatting with Mike Mills of REM and he brought up The Mamas and The Papas. To which she responded, "Oh, are they a group?" Later on in the conversation, the Rolling Stones tune "Ruby Tuesday" began playing in the background and Jewel said to Mike, "Uhh...that's the Beatles, right?" Overall, she was her charming, bright, down-to-earth self. :) Claire ------------------------------ From: reach@fishnet.net (James Reach) Date: Fri, 29 Mar 96 00:43:31 PST Subject: Tower, KROQ I just came back from Tower Records in West Hollywood. Jewel performed: Pieces of You Cold Song Little Sister Sometimes It Be That Way Fat Boy Racecar Driver You Were Meant For Me Angel Standing By Who Will Save Your Soul? Chime Bells It was a free concert inside the record store, which was closed for the performance. The management had moved fixtures out to clear an area for the audience to stand. I estimate less than 100 people were there. Jewel was in good spirits and performed well. Her voice was fine, but the sound system didn't allow her high notes to soar, such as in "Angel Standing By" She was using her new guitar. She was wearing a revealing black halter top and jeans, and as usual looked beautiful without makeup. After the performance she signed autographs and spoke with fans. The store only had "Pieces of You" CDs for sale. They did not for example also display "Wizard of Oz in Concert" CDs. I have never seen one of those CDs, but another person on this list posted that it was available. I had never heard before the story that she told briefly on stage: she was fired from one of her waitressing jobs because she didn't sleep with her boss. Sexual harrassment is not one of the issues Jewel has ever dealt with in her songs, and I was surprised to learn that she was subjected to it, especially considering she was young, living paycheck to paycheck and needed the work at the time. I hope she deals with this subject in some future song, as many women are victims of it. "Fat Boy" is a new song that she also performed on KROQ earlier that day. It is about a friend she knew back home who recently committed suicide and the note he left said he felt bad because he will always be unappreciated because he is a fat pig. Lyrics anyone? Jewel also mentioned in her radio interview that she has two siblings: Autz and Shane. Shane is her brother, but based on the interview, it is not clear if Autz is a brother or sister. Of course, from the song Nikos, we know she also has a half-brother named Nikos. She said her father is named Attilla and her mother is named Nedra. I am not sure the spelling of these names. Folks, Jewel's popularity is totally mushrooming. As she said in her radio interview "Who Will Save Your Soul?" is the "little single that could." It has been out for almost a year, but now it is finally getting the appreciation it has always deserved. Jewel is supremely talented and finally her artistry is rightly catching on big time. I am not sure how this will play out. For those of us who have been preaching Jewel's qualities when she was hardly known outside of San Diego, it is strange to see her popularity soaring so that the fan base is getting everywhere. It is good, but also large. I just learned that Jewel has hired a management firm, called "Cold War." I find it getting very bigtime that Jewel now has at least two managers I know about, plus a record company and its associated management, plus this new management company. Also, I wish to mention that this list is phenomenal resource for Jewel fans to network, and Jewel and her management greatly appreciate it. I met Chip Davies from Cleveland at the concert (just another fan), who heard about the concert from this mailing list while he was on vacation in California. I have also travelled to another city where I met another Jewel fan. I hope to meet more of you Jewel fans across the country. Jewel is able to get her messages to her fans out via this method, and fans are able to communicate with one another. I think they were her best picks to nudge her way onto the airwaves with something that doesn't sound too different or daring. As much as her popularity has grown recently I don't think she's gotten to where any song she releases will be snatched up by every station in the country. An interesting side-effect of this though is some people I know who tend to shun the "trendy" popular music culture don't like Jewel because her songs sound too "mainstream." Of course, they've only heard WWSYS and YWMFM. Of course, when I push them they finally admit that she has got a great voice, so all I have to do is play "Amen" or "Foolish Games" to make them change their opinions on her. ... and WWSYS is only my second favourite Jewel song.... my first is all the others. :-) >Jewel is perfectly capable of wowing the market with one of those songs, >but she hasn't. I think if she did try releasing RCD or GGtW she'd scare away a lot of people who think she's "wierd" (so much for the alternative lifestyle). And yodelling, well... let's just say the only two truly "alternative" music styles now are yodelling and polka. - --- etienne@ahoynet.com -- http://www.ahoynet.com/~etienne/home.html ## All opinions expressed are yours; you have only yourself to blame. ## ------------------------------ From: Dustin Mark Mac Pherson Date: Fri, 29 Mar 1996 09:19:02 -0500 (EST) Subject: WoW WHAT A CONCEPT Hey Tom! Also, for those of you looking for Save the Linoleum, Phyllis Barnaby, or the other promo singles I suggest getting a copy of Goldmine magazine. I got save the linoleum and Phyllis from there. Two drawbacks are they are usually expensive (15 and 10 dollars plus postage) and it takes a long time to look through each ad. Goldmine is basically just a newspaper type magazine where mail order record shops advertise. You can find many rare and wonderful things there if you look hard enough. Ben, as someone corectly pointed out on this list Hootie has already been around for ten years. Maybe not in your area but they have been around. They built fans. Phish is a good example of a touring band. So is dave matthews. So is Edwin McCain SO WHAT? So is joan osborne. They have FANS rather than fans? Jewel started out doing this too. I'll give you that. Personally i'm glad she left San Diego. Otherwise i'd never have seen her live. Just cause the new "fans" learn to like jewel... it's not as if the older fans are being pushed out of this invisible contaier of fans that only holds so many. Jewel can have as many fans as she people like her music. And it doesn't matter if they only like POY... If they like it they like it and it pleases them At the end of your message you write that she'd be back in the coffe shops doing the same thing she did before as if that's a bad thing. But you also say being popular is a bad thing. Ben i know you are not the only one who says things like this.
