This was apparently released in early 1995 -- with the warning "Licensed for promotion only - sale is prohibited". The disc comes in a cardboard sleeve with an insert describing all of the artists on the disc. Here's what the liner notes say about Jewel: Newcomer Jewel Kilcher's startling debut, "Pieces Of You", is full of shining contradictions. Innocent, yet full of knowing experience. Definitely one to watch. Hope this helps in the FAQ discography department. - -Ken kenmlee@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------ From: j.mullins1@genie.com Date: Sun, 17 Mar 96 16:17:00 UTC 0000 Subject: Jewel dates > lowing dates with Bob Dillion: April 13 Drew Univ, Madison > 14 New Haven, Conn, Palace Theater 16 Amherst, > Mass, at the University somewhere 17 Berlington, VT, Univ > of VT 18 Providence, RI, Strand Theater Wait, thanks a lot for this info, BUT...I don't understand. There is currently a proposal for the newsgroup rec.music.white-power, an attempt by neo-nazi racists to legitimize their activities. It is now in the CFV stage, where anyone with a valid e-mail address may vote. "White power" racist music is not a legitimate form of music deserving of a separate rec.music newsgroup, but rather a political group masquerading as a musical one. And, the rec.* hierarchy is inappropriate because rec.* is for recreational activities, and racism is anything but recreational. But, most importantly, we must show the racists that they will not be granted a mainstream forum in order to promote hate. If you don't want a Usenet where minorities feel unwelcome and uncomfortable, vote NO on rec.music.white-power. Let's make this a crushing defeat for racists. To vote, send e-mail to music-vote@sub-rosa.com and put I vote NO on rec.music.white-power in the body of the message. The actual CFV can be found on news.announce.newsgroups, or by sending a blank e-mail to music-cfv@sub-rosa.com. Voting ends 23:59:59 UTC, 18 Mar 1996, so act quickly! ------------------------------ From: MORRELL@emuvax.emich.edu Date: Mon, 18 Mar 1996 0:20:37 -0500 (EST) Subject: Foolish Games I just wanted to say that I have been on this list for a few weeks now and it is amazing to see all the support for Jewel. I think that her album is just one great song after another. I must put my 2 cents in and say that my favorite song is by far "Foolish Games". It is just one of those songs that youcan just kick back, relax, and think of past memories with. "My patience keeps me planitff, mt high hopes keep me alone". Does anyone know if sheet music is available for any of Jewel's songs (specifically "Painters")? Also, is the song "Adrian" based on a real person? Thanks, Kate ------------------------------ From: Derek Mok <4dm@qlink.queensu.ca> Date: Mon, 18 Mar 1996 10:11:05 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Foolish Games Introductions... New to the list. 19-year-old university student. Thinks there's a brilliant artist lurking in Jewel Kilcher who has yet to surface. Favourite songs: 1. "Adrian" 2. "Who Will Save Your Soul" 3. "Pieces Of You" 4. "Little Sister" 5. "Don't" I also think Jewel is not completely mature in her artistry, judging by weak moments like "I'm Sensitive", which is a song devoid of her usual poeticism and narrative power, lagging into a pleading, weak song. Just an opinion. I recommend Heather Nova, Taste Of Joy, Bettie Serveert and Crash Vegas for Jewel lovers. They are diverse takes on the folk-rock genre, with varying degrees of tendresse and aggressiveness to their music. I.D. ................................................ . . . I was watching "Extra" (an entertainment show) on Friday, when all of a sudden I recognized the music they were playing during one the segments. It was the opening music for "WWSYS". Later, during another segment they played the opening muscic from "Pieces of You". I guess the music coordinator has really good taste :) -Joanne P.S. I was flipping through an old "Rolling Stone" (Alicia Silverstone is on the cover) when I ran across a picture of a very happy Jewel talking to a very happy Sean Penn. ------------------------------ From: born2run@city-net.com (John J. Mihaljevic) Date: Sun, 17 Mar 1996 22:56:44 -0500 Subject: Introduction / Request Hi all, My name is John, and I'm new to the list. I thought I'd introduce myself by telling you how I discovered Jewel. I'm a big fan of Tori Amos, and saw Jewel discussed there many times. After reading many reccommendations of her music, I decided to go out and buy the CD. It was the only CD I'd ever bought without first hearing any of the music. It also happens to be one of my favorite CDs in my collection. The only other Jewel music I've got is the video of the Wizard of Oz performance, which is fantastic, IMHO. That brings me to the request I've got for you. I've only got Jewel's CD "Pieces Of You", but would love to hear more. I've seen posts that talk about over 100 songs (!), and would love to get as many of them as I can. Thanks to the discography in the FAQ (great job to the maintainer, btw!), I see there's plenty of stuff out there waiting for me to hear it. If anyone would be kind enough to copy some stuff for me, I'd really appreciate it. Obviously, I don't have any Jewel to offer (unless you need the Wizard Of Oz video), but I've got some other artists you might be interested in--Tori Amos, Sarah McLaghlan, Prince and Springsteen mostly. Email me if you'd be willing and able to help. Thanks again, and take care. John John J. It is a funny, charming song and if possible I would like a copy. If anybody can help me out please let me know. By the way, the performance was excellent, and because it was sponsered by a radio station it was free and broadcasted. I was shocked at how many people showed up. There were people still waiting to get inside when the show ended. Untill that Saturday I thought I was the only Jewel fan in the city. I only wish that I could have taped the show also. ------------------------------ From: CJDavid@DOCKMASTER.NCSC.MIL Date: Mon, 18 Mar 96 19:44 EST Subject: Radio Jewel-Tori comparison... Hey, people... I was in the car today listening to a NY station and they played WWSYS. (Not a big deal...) Then the DJ gets on and rambles on about the critics who have said there is a connection between her and Tori... It was kind of funny because he's listing: "They're both women, they both perform on their own, but Tori plays the piano and jewel pplays the guitar, Tori uses many more food illusions..." He went on for a couple of minutes like this and then he started getting desperate and talking about hair color... Anyway with all the arguements we have about the relationship (or lack thereof) of the two of them, I thought it was pretty ironic... This whole story had no point, I just thought I'd share... Note: My addition: I don't think we'll see Tori Yodelling anytime soon...
