I know the relation between them and Jewel, but they do not need to be the subject of every single e-mail on this list. I have not seen very many jewel posts compared to the Rugburns ones (except for her not being on TV yesterday). I will keep the list so that if, for example, Jewel is playing a certain area, those in that area can get together for a pre-concert party. Or if someone wants a boot of a certain performance, I will know who is likely to have been there. Also this way, if people need help with carpooling to a concert maybe something could be arranged. There a million reasons to want to keep a list of your physical addresses as well as your email addresses. I can think of more, but at this point you too can see the advantages. Please send me your real name, address, phone number, and email address to me. Also very important please tell me if there is any restriction you want on this information, for example do not release my phone number only or ask me before you send my information to another fan. I will keep the directory on my computer. If you ever need to know, "I'm going to see Jewel in Cleveland, are there any other fans who can party with me?" I will be able to write you back with a list of the fans in that area and you can try to arrange something. As you know, this is all voluntary, but I think it will be good to bring the community of Jewel fans together. Please write me the information via private E-Mail. I love Jewel's music and think that she is a very fascinating person. But I think that I would be bored to tears if everypost was exclusively about Jewel. I would encourage an intelligent exchange of ideas about life and music, but remembering that we are all here because we enjoy Jewel's music. For example, I don't think posting about your favotite cookie recipe is a good idea. But I do feel if you come across something related to music or the arts, it is probably a good idea to share your ideas. I feel that a discussion about the Rugburns is quite helpful, and actually very related to the topic at hand. If you have the Innerchange tapes, then you see a slightly different side of Jewel when she plays with Steve Poltz. I would defend Rugburns posts as quite relevant. I also think that music related posts are also relevant. Especially when someone dsicovers a new artist. As much as I like Jewel, I cannot listen to her 24-7. I am a very big fan of Jewel. But I have found that most of us here know an awful lot about her, and we wouldn't mind finding stuff out about new artists. I respect A.C.'s right to say that the list should be exclusively Jewel-centered(my apologies if I misinterpreted you, A.C.) but I must politely disagree. (OOPS! I cant' edit so please disregard the above line!!!) I have met many really wonderful people in my less than a month of being on this list. And I have noticed that I have talked to them privately about many, many other things than Jewel. Sorry for rambling! But as a law student, I am an advocate of free speech. Thanks for listening!!! I did not mean to say, "this should exclusively be Jewel. Nothing else." I am sorry if i came across that way, but I really meant that I thought that there were too much Rugburns posts, and not enough Jewel posts. I too cannot listen to Jewel 24-7, and I don't expect that anyone does. I just thought that this list was to discuss Jewel, among other things (related things, like the Rugburns), but it seems to be straying off of the topic. I, too, do not want people posting their mom's cookie recipes or "How to make $5,000 in 1 hour" posts... I'm sure nobody else wants to, either. I'm sorry if I came across that way, but it does seem to be very rugburns-related in the past few days. When I first subscribed to this list, it was GREAT!! (it still is), but other topics weren't discussed as in-depth as this has. Maybe I should just grow accustomed to it. No big deal, and i am sorry if i offended anyone. ac. ******************************* A.C. I am on some other mailing lists where any mention of a band other than the one the mailing list is set up for is severely criticized. I am glad that this is not the case with the Jewel list. One reason is that the best way to find out about other bands you might like is by talking to people who like the same kinds of music you do. I strongly advise against just buying CD's you've never heard just on a whim like I do. You find some great music but it becomes very expensive. I just wanted to state my feelings about discussion on this list. thanks for all the rugburns mailing list news you guys sent me. Great show by the way!! - ---------------------- San Diego Union (Currents & Arts) March 5, 1996 Raw Talent Multifaceted Jewel, blisteringly impudent Rugburns stage memorable homecoming By James Hebert Staff Writer It now seems a glaring error of casting that placed San Diego's own Jewel in the lead role for a New York staging of "The Wizard of Oz" last fall. The blazingly ascendant singer-songwriter-yodeling virtuoso is no the wide-eyed, naive Dorothy -- at least not any longer. Neither is she quite the Good Witch Glinda, nor even the wizard herself. Jewel is, in fact, the tornado. On Saturday night, Jewel whirled back into town for a homecoming date with those lovable rock jesters the Rugburns and 1,400 or so other friends, and you didn't have to be plonked in the head by a falling farmhouse to realize that local music may never be the same again. Since she departed San Diego last year to tour the nation with her sweetly seditious acoustic tunes and breezily gorgeous voice, Jewel has polished a poise that already was remarkable for someone still just 21. Consider this: When Jewel took the stage in November at New York's Lincoln Center for the nationally televised (on TNT) "Wizard" -- with Debra Winger, Jackson Browne and other Marquee names - -- it had been fewer than two years since she was living out of her VW van in Pacific Beach, playing to the faithful at the tiny Innerchange coffeehouse and washing her hair in the reastroom sink at Denny's. She was signed directly to a major label (Atlantic) after her "discovery" in 1994, and the resulting "Pieces of You" album is an understated showcase of Jewel's sometimes cutting, sometimes whimsical folk-rock. But as demonstrated at downtown's Spreckels Theatre on Saturday, the twister that is Jewel also has picked up some Delta-blues riffs, a sharpened talent for story-telling and the serene self-assurance of a confirmed survivor. At one point, introducing a song about society's disaffected and dismissed, Jewel gleefully flipped a double birdie to the memory of two women who had been unkind to her back in that Denny's restroom. (Dorothy, we hardly knew ye.) Peering out at the capacity Spreckels crowd, Rugburns signer-songwriter Steve Poltz, a mentor to Jewel, had it about right when he noted, "It's really cool how local bands and local music filled up this place tonight." The Rugburns have been on a run of their own lately: Last month, they performed the national anthem before a Clippers-Warriors basketball game in L.A., and whoever booked them ought to win a medal for bravery. In a venue that has recently hosted major acts from Nanci Griffith to Simple Minds, this combination of local heroes -- along with the unbilled and woefully underexposed Gregory Page, a solo artists who doubles as the Rugburns' bassist -- filled a theater with fans willing and eager to pay $15 a head for the privilege. Jewel, especially, was both the drawing card and the prize of the night. She showed a streak of daring straight off, striding onstage in a chic, black outfit to open with "Pieces of You", an unsettling evocation of prejudice that walks a delicate line between humor and fright. Jewel's voice enjoys a kind of inverse relationship with her listeners: As her pitch rises, their jaws drop. Her control and emotion can be startling, whether she's singing with the urgency of Tracy Chapman on "Little Sister" or the girlish giddiness of...who? Shirley Temple? ... on "I'm Sensitive" (and its delicous line, "I was thinking it might do some good / if we robbed the cynics and took all their food). This is talent in raw but undeniable abundance; onstage, Jewel's music and presence seem almost to deepen before one's eyes. She reaches a gospel resonance on such songs as "Don't" and "Near You Always", with some deft guitar work on the latter. But her humor leavens the heavier themes: On a self-styled blues tune that was like Muddy Waters meeting Monty Python, she crooned: "I walked to school both ways with no legs / I got the blues more than you do." On top of all this, Jewel's trademark yodeling is enogh to knock your lederhosen off. She closed her set with it, speeding up past the point where you'd expect one's tongue to simply fall out. She learned this skill in Alaska, of all places, her home before San Diego. If Gregorian chant can take the world by store, there must be room for polar yodeling. The Rugburns, who played last in the four-hour show (and were joined by Jewel for a few songs), were their usual impudent selves. It's a shame no one thought to cast this foursome in "The Wizard" as well, in the roles of the flying monkeys. Along with older favorites such as "Hitchhiker Joe" and "Me and Eddie Vedder", the band offered plenty of selections from its lates album, "Taking the World by Donkey". There was a long lull in the middle of the set -- when the Rugburns get into more serious themes, they seem a bit unsteady, substituting lots of country twang for a slump in originality. Poltz, though, is a born showman. His pseudo-striptease on a spoof of a TLC song had the crowd hooting, as Rob Driscoll played chucka-chucka guitar rhythms and bassist Page laid down a funky beat. "Kilkenny Pub", a Rubgurns staple, was a favorite, too; drummer Jeff "Stinky" Aafedt marched around the theater to the psycho-Celtic beat, sporting a kilt and snare drum. (Aafedt's frequent saliva-spouting fits behind the drum kit were less charming). And as a solo act, Page proved himself again to be a stand-up talent -- in more ways than one as his amusing and self- deprecating stage banter demonstrated. His songs, from the ragtimey "The Last Train" to the over-the-top "Good Night Staurday Night" to the sweetly plainspoken "I'm Happy Just the Way I Am", tell radiant tales of good-natured losers, watching TV and overdosing on Ho-Hos as the world rushes past. He wasn't folling anyone with the "loser" schtick, naturally. But on a night with such a richness of homegrown talen, it was nice to get a bit of perspective. - ---------------------- That took a lot longer to type than I tought! Oh well, enjoy! Btw, did anyone who went notice that she didn't have her usual feathers on her guitar? What happened? Hiranya?
