Tshirts: there was only about a week or so of shows at which Jewel was out of tshirts cuz they sold faster than expected. She has three different ones and they will be at all the shows remaining on this tour. Jewel's taping of Crossroads will air in March, but no dates are available yet. Spin magazine is doing an interview and photo shoot around Jewel's San Diego show, dont know when its scheduled for print. Also, People magazine has just committed to a full page on Jewel! Crowd members (young and old) refused to shut up while Edwin McCain and Jewel (especially) played their hearts out. The "pumped" guys and "available" girls seemed to think it was a singles night, not a live music night. "Why are all these people talking around the edges [of the stage]?" asked a frustrated Jewel near the end of her set. "F___ers!" Amen. When performers are gracious enough to play, be gracious enough to listen. Okay I'm done. The show was more of a double bill than "Edwin MCain with special guest Jewel." Jewel was just as good, if not better, than McCain and his band. Jewel consisted of Jewel, her guitar and perhaps the best female voice in music today. Jewel's range, style, depth and lyrics revealed a musical maturity well beyond her 21 years. Jewel's voice is as pure as the glacier streams running through her home-state of Alaska. Her voice was schoolgirlsweet one moment and gospel powerful the next, hitting every note and style in between. Even her yodeling at the set's end was authentic and breathtaking enough to bring the talky crowd to a roar of approval. Jewel sings folk music like it should be sung -- with her heart open through her often passionate ("Who Will Save Your Souls"), funny ("Race Car Driver") and always meaningful songs. Jewel's between-song banter helped her bond with the audience. She even revealed that she was born in Salt Lake. "I *myself* was conceived in a fit of Mormon passion," she said, gaining loud approval and understanding from the crowd. Jewel is a rare occurance in the prefab world of '90s music. She is undaunted by the physical and emotional boundaries established for female performers. It would be wonderful if other performers could sing with the same power and wisdom that Jewel posses at the young age of 21. Jewel is a unique woman -- a special musician who cannot be duplicated. Since Jewel's only equipment was her guitar, there was little sound-checking needed. Edwin McCain followed quickly behind her, gracing the Zephyr with catchy music that had "southern rock" written all over it. McCain and his band play basic blues/rock chords, but they do it with oh-so-much soul. The drummer and bass player were solid all night, providing perfect rhythm. Craig Sheilds gave the music a jazzy touch by playing about ever type of saxophone imaginable. He also played keyboards on some tracks and a wind controller that a Twitch photographer referred to as a "Hootie Horn." Shields' smooth delivery on the horns carried the songs that McCains's raspy Christopher-Robin-meets-Stevie-Wonder vocals did not carry. The band was at their best on the fun songs like "Jesters, Dreamers & Thieves." MCain was at his best on emotional songs like "America Street" and a solo encore of "3 a.m." Despite solid, soulful playing, the band deviated little from how they sound on CD. When they did mix it up, their talent shined through. The crowd may have been interested in themselves, but Edwin McCain and Jewel were interested in putting on a show. They did just that. Maybe the next time the audience wiull be more receptive and appreciative of good music. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a few comments. This guy is smitten. Especially since announcing the show before, Twitch called Jewel's album "less than precious" and praised McCain's blues/rock style. He really didn't have to get on a soapbox about the crowd though. The audience around me was the quietest audience I've ever seen at a concert (compared to the November Alanis Morissette concert..).
