Alright, these ironic little twists are killing me. I got down to the Hurricane last night and the guy at the door said there was a mix up with Jewel's management so she was playing Lawrence ( I hate J-Hawks ). The ironic part is that until a month and a half ago I was going to school in Ames, where she played Monday night. I kinda feel like I felt when I confessed my undying love for a woman and she proceeded to calmly tear my heart out of my chest. Oh well, If anyone out there sees or talks to Jewel tell her she needs to make Kansas City a stop on her tour real soon. Thanks for listening to my ramblings. P.S. First off, I am not an Edwin fan. I had never even heard of the guy before this tour, and was extremely shocked when I showed up at the Jan 27th Boston show, expecting to just wait my turn in line and get right in, and then found it sold out. (An extra 2 bucks to the guy at the door and I think my pitiable state, soaking wet from waiting in the rain, got me in.) I dont go to clubs much these days but I used to go a lot, and when I did I would notice all the time that people in clubs just dont seem to listen to the music a whole lot. As we all have seen, it's still the norm. I frankly can never understand this, especially when you have paid your hard-earned cash to come see a particular person. It is one thing to show up at a place as a night out and there is a cruddy local band playing out, but another thing entirely when you have actually paid money up front to come see a particular act. And it is also one thing for the Edwin fans not to pay any attention to Jewel (someone they may never have heard of) but some of these folks werent even paying attention to Edwin! I was standing about 2/3rds of the way back during his set and just remarking on this, reminding myself that this was indeed a sold out show with most of the crowd here to see Edwin. Strange. So while I would love to be hard on the Edwin fans who hampered many of our experiences, all I can say is it seems to be a human nature/club atmosphere kind of thing. Hopefully, when Jewel is out touring again, we can get her in slightly less rowdy venues, or at the very least a pairing with an act that complements her unique style. A final note about the Boston show. This was the 2nd time I'd seen Jewel. The first was over the summer in an extremely under-publicized show at the Lansdowne Playhouse in Boston, which featured an audience of about 30 people (in a room that could probably accommodate 300!) At the 27th show, Jewel made reference to this earlier show by thanking everyone who came out tonight and how grateful she was since the last time she played here "20 people showed up." While I felt bad for her that the crowd was so small at the summer show, it did give me the chance to meet her afterwards, say hello, get the autograph. She wrote on my poster, "Fish dont know they're flat; they just think they're sideways." - -steve melisi ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Wed, 14 Feb 1996 12:26:42 -0500 (EST) Subject: tour date rumours I don't like to distribute rumours or inaccurate information, but since people seem to want it, here are some Jewel tour dates. And the booklet scans look pretty good and are surprisingly easy to access. I agree 100% with Steve M. that some portion (usually surprisingly large) of the audience doesn't come to shows to see the music. There are always exceptions, of course (like at the recent Aimee Mann show, where there was very little jabbering going on). I wish it were even true that that happens more in the back of the room, but I've been crammed up close next to bunches of people chattering (or screaming) away throughout a show. This is usually only mildly annoying for a loud show with a full band, but can totally ruin a softer, accoustic set. I recall having to stand with my hands cupped over my ears (looking quite ridiculous!) from about the 5th row to even have a chance of hearing Pete & Maura Kennedy over the boisterous Shawn Colvin crowd who ignored her. It's clear that this is something that bothers Jewel very much. I wonder what sort of control she has over her tours? She has certainly not opted to play in places where she would get the kind of respect that she vocally asks for during her shows. I know of at least two local venues that would be ideal for her to play at, where the audiences go exclusively to hear music, and talking is expressly forbidden. I've suggested them repeatedly, but keep seeing her show up at loud, trendy clubs, so I have to assume that is either her choice or where the record company wants to send her. If she eventually moves up to small auditoriums, the crowds there are usually more respectful. Of course, I'd still rather see her in a singer friendly club. The shirts have sold so fast on tour that they were caught unawares and had to reorder, causing a lag time of about a week when there were no tshirts at all. In the meantime a new one has been designed by Jewel's mom and I have to say it is one of the best Ive seen. They'll be available at shows after this Fri. It has a very da-da-da buxom cartoon- style cowgirl on it! Its tan and brown. Also a new wht/grey shirt with Jewel in purple. I like it too. The other two will be phased out (the I'm Sensitive on and the album cover one). In the up coming newsletter you will be given mail order info. of where you can get tshirts. I live in Columbus and some of my favorite bands of all time are local. And let's remember that not too long ago both Jewel and the Rugburns were both local bands. People go out to have a good time and we can't blame them for being loud at a Jewel concert any more than being loud at a bar where a local band is playing. I was at the Cincy show on Feb. 3rd. The crowd was loud but it didn't really detract from the concert for me. Jewel is amazing and while she was playing I really wasn't paying the least bit of attention to my surroundings. Besides...it was cool to hear her say "that got them to shut up" after she started to yodel. - -Aaron ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #56 **************************
