I'm not sure if The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor gave it co-billing in their print ads, etc., but I know the February calendar they print up and make available at the club listed Edwin McCain performing February 7th...no mention of Jewel at all on the calendar. We mentioned it as a double bill in our listings on The River. The show was sold out in any case. Greetings, I just got to see Jewel for the first time this past saturday in Chicago and I wasn't disappointed in the least. In fact I was overwhelmed at the difference between album vs. live versions. However at the concession stand they ran out of t-shirts and even though they had some on display they said they couldn't sell them. So I'm wondering if some kind soul on this list who is going to an upcoming show would buy one for me? I'd glady mail out a check or money order to the person for the cost of the t-shirt and shipping. Unfortunately I didn't write down her set list, but she played a pretty good, standard set. She opened with Pieces of You and the Dolores/Keanu saga, and closed with the captivating Chime Bells. And, during the instrumental break right before she yodels her fastest, she said, "That got them to shut up" and flipped the people the bird who were talking throughout the show. Overall though, I didn't think the crowd noise was that bad--but then there were a lot of Jewel fans where I was standing. She seemed surprised by the number of people who knew her non-album material, as this was her Minneapolis debut, but a few of us vocal die-hards shouted out requests for favorites. Overall she was pretty favorably received and I'm sure she won over a few more fans. The only song she performed that was new to me was Kiss My Ass--which definitely has the Steve Poltz influence. She also performed God's Gift to Women, Race Car Driver, 1,000 Miles Away, A Very Big Girl, Daddy, Angel Standing By, Near Me Always, Behind the Wall, Who Will Save Your Soul, You Were Meant for Me, and probably more, though that's all I can remember at the moment. Her guitar playing has really improved--she seems much more confident than she used to be. She also can change tunings remarkably fast compared to what she used to do. I was amazed at the number of songs she fit in in her just over an hour set. She doesn't seem to be as passionate as she used to be when she sings though--there were times when she used to perform I would swear she was going to break down and cry. Now she seems to be having more fun with the fun songs, and just performing the mellower songs without really getting into them like she used to. But then I suppose its hard to be passionate and soul-baring to a large crowd of people, many of whom could care less than you're playing. But each of these three artists have very different styles. Tori is more "in your face" than either Jewel or Bjork. This is especially evident on her first two albums. She loves to sing about religion and sexuality. On her third album, Boys for Pele, it is not as "in your face". It is more abstract or metaphorical. She lets the music do the talking on this album, anf the words are of lesser importance this time around. Bjork has a style all her own. No one could ever accuse her of copying anyone. On her most recent album, she takes on all kinds of musical styles, and this is definitely worth a listen. But out of Tori, Bjork, Jewel or any one else, Jewel' music pulls me to places that no other artist can. Her music feels as if she is talking right to you. And I feel I have had many experiences similar to what she sings about. If anyone would like to talk about other female artists or all music in general drop me a line. Since I am new here, is Kristen Hersh ever a subject of discussion. Her album "Hips and Makers" is phenomenal, and I would think most Jewel fans would dig it. Overall Previously to this she had asked if people could be quiet. I heard a constant level of conversation from the back of the club, but that's pretty much to be expected of First Ave. There's generally a lot of noise even when the main performer is on stage, it's just that you can't really notice it with most of the bands I see there because you can't hear anything over the band. >though, I didn't think the crowd noise was that bad--but then there were a >lot of Jewel fans where I was standing. She also did My Own Private God's Gift To Women and had a neat little story before it. I'm just writing this down from memory so if anyone has any corrections they'd be greatly appreciated. (I think this story might make a good addition to the FAQ). It seems that one time, while she was in CA, her car broke down and she had to hitch hike to get help. Well, this car pulled up and the driver opened the door. Before she could get in he said, "Before you get in, I want you to promise something. Promise that next time you see someone who needs help you'll stop and help them." So she thought, "Okay, karma, that's cool," and got in. On the way to a phone they just talked about the weather and bad haircuts and stuff (she said that it's a good idea to avoid talking about politics or stuff that might push people's buttons). Then, on the way back he asked her, "So, don't you think that men are just pigs?" And she said, "No." Then he said, "No, really. Don't you think men are just the scum of the Earth?" And she said, "No, not really." And he said, "Oh, come on. They're always doing sleazy things and generally being crude." She replied (in a meek little voice) "Why, are you going to do something crude?" And he asked if she would show him her tits. She said, "No." He said, "Oh, so you're that* kind of girl." She replied, "I guess so." He then asked, "Well, if I'm in this situation again, what should I do so that the person will do that?" So she said that she decided to write a song for him, "My Own Private God's Gift To Women." > >Her guitar playing has really improved--she seems much more confident than >she used to be. This was my first time seeing her play live, but I was really blown away. It was much better than hearing the recordings. I was almost in tears during "Near You Always", because that song just really gets to me. It perfectly describes a relationship I'm in right now, which isn't one, but that's a really long story. Jewel is great live. I really hope that I get to see her in a small setting again someday. It'd also be nice to see her in a more laid back atmosphere than First Ave. > >Jeff Hanson - -Aaron Walker Email address: awalker@macalstr.edu Home Page: http://www.math.macalstr.edu/~awalker/ ------------------------------ From: gvrn@ix.netcom.com (Gregory Vernon ) Date: Mon, 12 Feb 1996 16:23:47 -0800 Subject: Good Morning America Hello all.
