OK, I've written to Leane and I know she's truely swamped by requests. I have also, however, recieved notes from two of you (not mentioning any names, in the proper form) who were really disappointed that you got shut out. Now, I'm proposing if I do in fact recieve a copy, I will pick up the slack for anyone who got shut out by spinning them a tape. Granted, it will be a diff. generation but if the tape is good, I have good enough equip. (Not the best, but good enough) that it shouldn't make that much of a difference. So, you can stop pouring the mail into her box and still get the tape. If you are interested, remember all the needed info when replying... The leaves are not going to have to pay any money, or perform any great deeds. All you'll have to do is send a blank tape and return postage to your branch leader, or make a trade with him/her if you want to. That's it. Most noteable are the following: 1) All new layout and graphics on the main page. I hope everyone is using a browser that supports transparent .gif files (Netscape, Mosaic, Internet Explorer, etc) :-) I'll try to add alternates for those who aren't, however that is not a priority right now. Looks nice at 1152x864 (the resolution I run), and I've also tested it at 800x600 to make sure it fits nicely. 640x480 might be a little cramped, I didn't try it myself. 2) I've added scans of the Pieces Of You booklet that contains Jewel's comments on each of the songs on Pieces Of You. I've had this booklet for a while, but I didn't think it would scan well at all - thanks to Neal I was convinced to try it anyway, and the results are quiet nice now that I touched them up a little. The booklet is available under the "Lyrics&Audio" section of the main page - click on the image to the right of the track listings for Pieces Of You. 3) New images under the "Photo Gallery" section. Some have requested that I add more images here, and I've got a couple of high resolution grayscale scans from 8x10 glossys that I haven't seen anywhere else on the net, plus a couple of other images from magazine articles or whatever. I hope everyone enjoys it, and any comments are welcome (encouraged, in fact)! http://www.cs.mun.ca/~colins/jewel.html Cheers, Colin Stuckless colins@cs.mun.ca ------------------------------ From: med12@cornell.edu (Mike) Date: Mon, 5 Feb 1996 14:16:43 -0500 Subject: Re: YWMFM CD I feel guilty about spamming the list like this, but I've lost, well accidentally deleted the message containing the address of the nice guy who is giving away the YWMFM single, so I'm going to put my name down here. med12@cornell.edu Mike Dawson 314 Risley Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853. Coming down from the adrenalin rush, beginning to think in multi-syllables again, etc. etc. Hi. Let me start over. Ahem. Jewel opened for Edwin McCain at the World Mardi Gras here in Indianapolis tonight. It's a pleasant venue, with plenty of room for people to sit and eat/drink, lots of stage width, and seemingly enough pleasant servers to fetch the food/beverage. I showed up two hours early, just to make sure I had a chance at a good seat near the front in case they were nasty about people standing in front of the stage. It was nearly empty, which geve me mixed feelings. I spotted a couple of people whom I met originally at Jewel's last concert here in August, and we exchanged thumbs-up signs and some banter (I wore my "F@#& U! I'm Sensitive" T-shirt, though I didn't put it on till I got to the venue for fear that others' sensitivity was too high). I had no trouble grabbing a good seat, and was amused as usual that people assumed I was expecting a crowd and didn't ask to share the table. Then I heard a rather sexy contralto voice ask if I was planning to use the whole table. I turned around and found an attractive young lady sitting next to me; managing to keep my composure, I assured her she was welcome to sit there (and worried about sharing a table with a single woman, lest the story get back to my wife!); but it was OK, she introduced her boyfriend who arrived a moment later. Nadine and Bill were E. McC. fans, so I proselytized Jewel for a while, till their eyes glazed over. :) It was getting toward concert time, so I hit the restroom; and upon my return, calculated where I could best stand near the stage without blocking the view of other paying customers. The stage was elevated, as were the seats, so when a group of fans started to gravitate toward the stage, I followed inconspicuously. Wow! There was Jewel, talking to the sound man and getting ready to step on stage. At this point, one of the burly but calm security guys started waving everyone back from the stage; "Come on, everybody back to their seats." "What seats?" challenged a couple of puzzled fans. After a few more ineffectual arm-waves, the security guy shrugged and let us alone. Yay! Jewel took the stage and got a ragged cheer when she introduced herself. Launching right into her set, she took the songs at a constant uptempo pace (as though trying to get the maximum number of tunes into her hour). Not a problem, but some of them, like "Little Sister", were even faster than usual; a bit unsettling to hear the words come out that fast. The set, in hardly any order at all: Pieces of You Little Sister Foolish Games Near You Always You Were Meant For Me Catch a Cold With Me 1,000 Miles Away Operatic Aria Summer Home In Your Arms Morning Song I Got The Blues More Than You Do Blues Deep Water Swedish Song (help me -- what's the name?) Race Car Driver I'm Sensitive Daddy Who Will Save Your Souls Plus a couple more I've forgotten, as they weren't familiar to me. Not a clinker in the bunch. The operatic thing popped up in between songs when she sang a few snatches of soprano while tuning the guitar; the audience responded, so she went on for a minute or so. I didn't recognize it, but it was either a phenomenal improv or something she learned during voice training, because it had a definite structure. The audience went wild over her guitar playing in "....Blues"; nice bending and sliding work! In fact the guitar work was excellent for the whole set, barring a few minor fluffs. Jewel's voice was a tiny bit rough, though the crummy PA didn't help a bit. I was standing 15 feet from her and I had trouble understanding words to songs I know very well. Beavis and Butthead standing behind me shouting at each other didn't help matters, either; they drowned her out on a couple of occasions, earning an evil glare from me and a girl in front of me. In fact, the crowd was excessively noisy tonight, except for the group clustered in front of the stage. The idiots behind me couldn't have been aware that a concert was going on; they were more intent on talking about their last lunch appointment, their sexual disfunctions, or whatever. A squirt gun full of vinegar would have been very handy right then. Jewel was in the middle of her story about the drug bust that she and Steve stumbled onto, when she suddenly looked at me, pointed at my shirt, and in a tone of discovery, interjected, "Hey! A 'Fuck You, I'm Sensitive!'" and then went right on with the story. I jumped about a foot in the air. Fifty people stared at me as though I'd said the "F" word myself. That was a very odd sensation! She closed the set with a wonderful (but fairly standard) little speech about sensitivity, environment, and encouragement; that led into a short paragraph saying that the ever-larger crowds, her fans, and the positive responses she got from all of us had made her feel much less nervous and more fulfilled every time she performed a song. The audience cheered, and she finished with WWSYS, very upbeat and extra vocal effort on the sustained notes. Big applause, and as she waved and smiled on her way off stage, about 50 people flowed toward the performer exit. I was quite surprised, as I was the only one to follow her after the August concert here. Jewel barely had time to unhitch her guitar and hand it to an assistant before she was encircled by a throng of polite but determined admirers. No one pushed or shoved, but everyone wanted to shake her hand, hug her, or just get a quick autograph. She was beaming, soaking up the attention like a sponge. Someone spoke to her out of my hearing; she laughed, reached out, and squeezed his hand. A young woman said something as Jewel signed her CD insert; Jewel hugged her. She had something to say to almost everyone. By the time I got to the front, I barely retained coherent speech but I had to try. "Hi, Jewel. A better concert than last August -- and twice as long!" "Oh, thanks! August... Oh, you're..." She sees my T-shirt again. "Yeah, I'm the guy who talked to you after you came out of the bus." "Oh yeah!" "Hey, thanks for playing here again! See you next time!" "Thanks a lot! Bye!" It must have been the atmosphere; we simultaneously reached out and briefly clasped hands as I said goodnight. Dizzying. I glanced over my shoulder as I exited the crowd, and Jewel was still being adored by the fans. What a huge difference from her last concert; I felt so happy for her. This is the best; she's still a private person but the world is cheering her on. The happiness that washed over me buoyed me out the door and down to the parking lot, where I found myself humming "I'm Sensitive" in front of the puzzled but pleasant cashier. I feel good tonight. I hope the scene I witnessed follows Jewel across the country; she's due and it's about time she got the attention she deserves. Sorry about the long post; hope some of you found it worth reading..... - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | gregdunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | Greg@gdunn.nawc-ad-indy.navy.mil | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #46 **************************
