We got out of Penn Station and took a cab to the Irving Theater. About three blocks away from the theater, the cab driver realized that he never set his meter and sighed. When he drops us off, the meter reads $1.75, but we give $6, because we felt bad, and that's probably what it would've cost (but on the way back, it only cost $4...oh well, guess it's a $2 tip). We stopped in at the bar across the street since we had over an hour before the doors opened, but there were already people lining up outside. After a glass Guiness, we go out and brave the cold for what seems forever. It didn't help either that I had to go to the bathroom, but I decided to wait half an hour. Go figure. Finally we get inside into the warmth, and I relieve myself. Is it me or does drinking beer provide the most relieving pisses? Anyway... I went to Jewel's show the previous Sunday at the Metro and met her afterwards and was pretty much in ecstasy for a few days. She was so nice, I decided to give her a present. I drew a picture of her with wings, i.e. I see her as an angel. It was pen and ink with a light acrylic wash for some slight color. I waited around for about half an hour next to the stage door for someone to give it to. The security guard at the door told me her manager was there, but it took a while for him to get to the door. I could've given it too her when she performed, but there was already a huge crowd in front of the stage and I would never have gotten through. While I was waiting, I met a list member - Rob, I think. Nice guy. He read my posting of what I was going to wear and picked me out. We talked for bit ("Two words: Tori Amos. That went on for far too long." :) Cut to Jewel. She was pretty good. But I was disappointed overall compared to my experience at the Metro. I guess I was spoiled by the small crowd in a bar setting. There were a lot of people at Irving (500 person capacity crowd), so it took away the intimacy I had felt earlier in the week. Her show wasn't exactly the same, and it was good to see. Memorable moments: She forgot the words to "Little Sister" (the second song of the night), and had to get help from the audience, who still missed a verse. The keyboardist, celloist, and violinist who accompanied her on "Foolish Games". She did the BUTCHERED version of "You Were Meant For Me". Ack! That was the low point of the night. I really wanted to hear the song, since she didn't play it at the Metro, but I didn't want to hear this version. Oh well. Beggars can't be choosers, right? She missed a ling in "Foolish Games": "I hid my soiled hands behind my back..." not that I'm nitpicking or anything. I just happened to notice it. A new song I hadn't heard..."Kiss Your Ass"??? But the crowd was really for her, and she loved it. "This is a lot better than waitressing!" she said after someone gave her flowers for the Nth time. She just loved the cheers and applause from the crowd and seemed to thrive on it. When she announced she was playing a new song, the crowd roared. She said, "I love this. You haven't even heard this song and you're already clapping." It was good to see her again. Oh...another story. When I entered the theater, there were promo posters of the POY cover on the walls. I was tempted to take one even before the show started, but upon talking to a security guard, he said it'd be better is I waited 'til after the show. "Okay, I could that." Well, after I handed my drawing off the her manager, I look around and see that all the posters are gone! Ack! I look everywhere and can't find one. Damn! Well, after her set, I went looking for my friends, and made my way upstairs to the balcony in my search. Well, wouldn't you know it! The last Jewel poster on the wall! So, I dart over and grab it. Yes! Now, I have to make space in my room between my Tori and Sarah posters. I stayed to see Edwin McCain unlike at the Metro, pretty much because I had no choice. But it was good to listen to him. He didn't sway me to buy his CD like Jewel did to one of my friends, but it was nice to sit back and listen to. But I didn't stick around long, cause my friends were getting low on money because they kept buying beer, and they wanted to stop or else they wouldn't have cab fare, so we left, lest they be tempted again by the bar. That was 12:30am. We didn't get home until about 2:45am, because we missed the 1am train, because my friends decided to stop into one of the various porno shops in NYC, and took forever. So, when we got to the station and found out the next train wasn't 'til 1:42am, we went back to the porno shop. Go figure. Well, I'm tired. But I just had to share my night. Take care and be good to yourselves. I didnt want to use my own name and address. So we decided to create one that I use and if im replaced sometime, it can keep being used by their volunteer and everybody can know that when they see the name Hiranya the info comes from Jewel's organization. Hiranya is a sanskrit name. It refers to the light and tone and knowledge we sort of dwell in before we actually get born. This "place" contains like our original blueprint-- what we came here to do and learn. Lenedra says that if we contemplate this light, we can slowly begin to remember. You know, why we're here. Its a cool thought and I mull it over frequently. I think it works, cuz it seems I feel a little more sure of why Im here and going through what I am. Yes, Jewel will tour by herself next. Its being talked about now, so no details yet. Probably her last tour before she goes into the studio to record--which now looks like Mar-Apr. Her current tour with Edwin goes through Feb 29. I think the Oz stuff might be available now cuz Lenedra just got a CD. Its the whole show on the CD. Jewel's 'Over the Rainbow" and 'Jitterbug' make the whole thing worth it. And Im really crazy about Natalie Cole's 'Out of the Woods'. MacDonald" Date: Sun, 28 Jan 1996 17:25:47 -0500 Subject: Jewel @ Mama Kin's Well, I saw Jewel for the first time last night. She played Mama Kin's in Boston. Show started at 10:15 or so, and she wrapped almost exactly 1 hour later. I was a tad disappointed the set was so short but she was amazing. I am in love. Anyhow, the majority of the people were there to see McCain, (Who btw I thought was excellent) and I could hear this rumble in the back that was really annoying. In fact I think Jewel had to ask twice for people to quiet down, which they didn't do. She had a cold, and occasionally she was sniffling and running her arm across her nose. :) Earthy crunchy indeed! I didn't bother to write down or memorize the songs she sang, but the one that blew me away (besides the yodeling :) was a swedish song (don't know the name), but I was just stunned. Her vocal range seems to have no limits. Just when I think she can't go higher or longer, or faster, she does, and then does it again, and again. I was just stunned. I've never seen the likes. I brought a friend with me who was pretty skeptical but was won over by the end of the set. We both thought she was hilarious and just seemed very genuine. My friend (who's 41, i'm 23) couldn't believe the poise, and stage presence this girl had at 21 years of age. Neither could I. God she's a cutie. I think i'm going to drive the 2 1.2 hrs to Northampton, MA tommorrow to see her again. I hear Iron Horse is a much more laid back setting. After last night a seat will be a welcome respite. I also hear she's playing New Bedford. Anyone have any info on that? Ah well, that's my story and i'm sticking with it. Neil MacDonald Hmm....we have a Neil, Neal, and Neile on this list. I have an extra ticket to the Innocence Mission concert in Palo Alto, CA this coming Wednesday, January 31. If you're not familiar with them, I'd probably describe their music as a kind of "ethereal" folk rock. Lead singer Karen Peris has a sometimes child-like voice with great vocal range, especially on the higher end of the scale. Their most recent album is "Glow" and probably the most played single was "Bright as Yellow." They opened for part of Natalie Merchant's recent tour and they're playing the same venue in Palo Alto that Jewel did a couple months ago. Mark tspinlob@leland.stanford.edu ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Mon, 29 Jan 1996 00:23:45 -0500 (EST) Subject: iron horse concert and other stuff heya, someone wrote quite some time ago that the concert at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA was to be broadcast on the radio, and, even though I'm gonna be there, I'd like to know if this is true so that I can tape it. Also, what channel would it be on (I think 100.9 FM since they are sponsoring the show). Anyone else gonna go? In case anyone (like you, Neil MacDonald) does show up, I'll probably be wearing one of them sherpa-type hats, a yellow barn jacket and other assorted clothes (maybe a black t-shirt with white print on the front or a Sarah McLachlan t-shirt). If you spot me, say hi; I sound desperate, don't I? Well going to concerts by oneself ain't exaclty the funnest way to experience the show, and most of the shows I've been to here at college, I've gone by myself. Sigh. On another note, the song "God's Gift to Women" from Save the Linoleum reminds me of indie pop, not Tori Amos (who I do like). The sound of the guitar, the bass, and the drums along with the chord progressions and the kinda-spoken-word-yet-kinda-sung verses strikes me as the kind of music that indie-girly-pop bands use. The chorus is different in style (I don't know how to categorize it, nor should I, lest I be beaten severely about the head and neck). Still, throughout the chorus and verse, the song does have an unpolished, "recorded in the basement" sound, most apparent in the jarring cymbal crashes and off-kilter drumming beats. Or maybe it's just me and my sound system. Actually, The part where Jewel sings "and your so vain" also reminds me of alternative/indie vocal stylings, where the singer skews the note up and hangs it there, most recently reminiscent of the song "Queer" by Garbage. I think my brother (he's 20, and doesn't like indie rock, but he does like alternative/modern rock and whole bunches of other types of music) would back me up on this. He's a big Jewel fan, but when I started to play GGTW for him, he said "who is this? this sucks." When I told him it was Jewel, he still said the song sucked and told me to skip to the next song. He did like the rest of the songs on Linoleum, though. In case I didn't point this out, I do like some indie rock and I do like GGTW. One of the features that impresses me the most about Jewel is her ability to use different vocal styles. The diversity is amazing and, I think (in my limited experience and scope of listening), quite rare among the world of recording artists. I still can't get over her imitation of Judy Garland's voice in the WOZ in concert. And she does that funny voice in Racecar Driver, the little girl voice in I'm Sensitive, the tired and world-weary voice in WWSYS, the angelic voice in Amen at the end (perhaps my most favorite part of PoY), and all the different variations on all her other songs. Well, I'm psyched about tomorrow (actually, it's today now). and hey, what's the deal with the collection of favorite Jewel songs? I tried that before and, what, six people responded? Am I going unnoticed here? boohoo:) I is just kidding. Good luck on getting responses. heheh Paul "I did my laundry, but overloaded the dryer so all my clothes were somewhere between damp and soggy (like my cereal this morning) and I've been letting them dry in my room for the past three hours while i work here in the campus center, so my room will probably be muggy and hot when I get back. whoopee.
