Previously, Clarke wrote: > thought it would be interesting to know what the general "Everyday Angel" > consensus is. This would allow us to compare (not blast) interests > concerning Jewel's WIDE range of styles. And therefore propose that we get > together and tabulate the fav's. I don't mean to demean this effort, but we shouldn't overestimate the value of the results. Simply having raw numbers associated with certain songs is hardly enough to demonstrate fully how her fans appreciate her different singing and songwriting styles. Nevertheless, the poll is still a good idea if only this is probably the first (?) time this has been attempted in this forum? And *somebody* has to volunteer to collect the e-mails... > So if this seems like a good idea then post, TO ME (to avoid the clutter), > *Your favorite song (no more) > *With subject "favorite" > and *post it by February 1st. Can I suggest one wrinkle? A favorite song poll for this artist really differs from those for other, "more established" artists in that among those voting, I think there is a lot of variability in the level of exposure to Jewel's work. When "Verdi Cries" and "Fall On Me" appear as the perennial winners of the 10kM and REM polls, for example, it's a safe assumption that the voters have considered a wide range of the artists' works, and not merely one release. Unfortunately, the latter may be true of many Jewel fans by default: she only *has* one studio release. And I don't think the statistics from the data group that has only heard _Pieces of You_ is really comparable to the stats from fans who know of and have heard her *other* 40, 50, whatever number of songs. Combining everything without acknowledging this leaves us with skewed results, IMHO. What I'm suggesting is that the experimenter :) collect one more piece of data in the submissions: a self-rating on a fairly arbitrary three point scale. I. You've heard _Pieces_(the album) and maybe you've been to one or some of her shorter shows, so you at least know about "Chime Bells" or "Cold Song" II. You meet the criteria for I -AND- you have one or more of her promo releases, like _Linoleum_ or _Shiva_ (i.e. you've heard "God's Gift," "Race Car Driver") III. You meet the criteria for II -AND- you're an old-timer back to the InnerChange days (or something close) -OR- you're an old-timer by proxy (I think having _Rare Angels_ is enough to put you in this category) Results could still be posted in the aggregate, but they would also be broken down by category. I basically see (I) and (III) as the two extremes, with (II) being a rough estimate of the middle ground. As I said, the distinctions are arbitrary and could very well break down. (Someone has _Rare_ without having _Pieces_? It's possible, I guess.) For what it's worth. Maybe nothing. I was going to try to get to that show considering I live there. But I knew that because this is the home of Hootie and Edwin the place would be absolutely packed. Rockafella's is just not a good place if you're over 25. According to Hiranya, some of the crowd was less than polite. Now I wished I would have gone so that I could have yelled at the jerks who where giving her a hard time. This is my first post. Good to see so many people touched by Jewel's music. I "discovered" Jewel while watching "Duets." I had just gone through a rotten breakup and "Foolish Games" almost sent me into convulsions. My friend got me the CD for my 30th, and I've been in love ever since. Keep the peace. Vinda ------------------------------ From: "James H. I'm a graduate student at Auburn University, and have never lived anywhere but Alabama. I was introduced to Jewel watching MTV late one night when WWSYS came on, and Jewel's beautiful voice inspired me to special order her CD. (All they have down here y'all is Country ;) ) It didn't hurt that she played acoustic guitar either, my favorite. I think the licking of sore wounds in the list is nice, but am ready for a little more discussion. So, here goes. I saw a picture of Kate Moss the other day and she reminded me of Jewel. Anyone else ever thought that, or do i need to get out more? Perhaps there could be a Jewel-announce list for those that want "just the facts"... only an idea. I enjoy the slightly off topic discussions here. Also, i wanted to thank Neile and others involved publicly for rare angels- well done! And thanks Hiranya for all your posts! I don't really expect much of a consensus, as people seem to like Jewel for a really wide variety of reasons. And the results will only be of interest for a year or so (working under the assumption that Jewel will be able to record another album in that time). As for possible ways to tally a favorite, it might be easiest to just have two categories. 1. Your favorite song on Pieces of You 2. If you are somehow exposed to more than just that disc (promos, bootlegs, concerts, whatever), your all time favorite Jewel song. I was just thinking yesterday that some of my original favorites from POY (the first couple times I heard it) have been superseded by some that took longer to grow on me. For example, my first favorite was "Morning Song" which now doesn't do anything for me. It took quite a while for "Painters" to grow on me because it's not very melodic. But now I find myself humming it at random times. "Near You Always" is probably the most drastic change, becoming perhaps the current favorite after languishing in the "it's ok" pile for a long time. Anybody out there ever just have a ride in the car where the music just focuses and amplifies your emotions and state of mind? This happened to me a couple times this past weekend. But the second time, it was late at night (about 12:30) and I was listening to my Jewel tape and the mood was perfect. I'd had a good evening with some friends and was driving home. With nobody else on the road and Jewel's soothing voice on my stereo I just started relaxing. Occasionally (sp?) I found myself traveling between 10-20 mph UNDER the speed limit! One thing that I had thought of but forgot to mention is someone keeping a list of who's going to Jewel's current shows. Not keeping it forever, but so that all these people writing in to see if anyone else is going to the show would have a source of info. Someone could keep a list of the shows coming up, and those who were going could email that person. Just an idea, which reminds me, I'd like to go to the Mama Kin show if anyone has the info for me, especially directions. Hiryana said that she would check on what we have for knowledge about past concerts. That would be great. I'll start keeping a record if noone else wants to. If people have a list of the shows Jewel has done recently, that you are sure about, I'll start writing those down. From now on, if somehow someone could send me a message everytime Jewel does a show, I could keep track of them. I guess that anyone that goes to a show could post something about it and I'd record it, along with setlists if we have one, and any other info. So I need help from all of you going to the concerts, or who know a lot about her schedule. And if anyone has a reliable list of some past shows I'd put those in. Hiryana if you have any way of confirming that the schedule was followed, then that would help us. As for the tape trees, the newbie adoption and the tape database, those are all out of my hands. We need people who have tapes to come forward and help on those. I don't mind doing this kind of administrative work, but i don't have any tapes to copy, so that's all I can do. If people don't want to make a public notice, and therefore get tons of requests for tapes, we could appoint a single person to collect the data, that the people with tapes would send their info to. That person will just have to promise not to ask any of those people for tapes personally, but resign him/herself to just running the trees or keeping record or what have you. I have said that I'm perfectly willing to do this, if people have problems with the idea, let me know. I'd like the tapes to flow more freely on the list, but I don't want to impose on those with tapes. So if they want to email me privately, or appoint someone else to be emailed privately, maybe this will solve people's problems. I think we should try to have everybody on the list have some live Jewel tapes (obviously Rare Angels is a good start), so that we can all have a larger frame of reference. That way we can all talk about Jewel's cranberries bit, or her yodeling, whatever. Probably my trouble is that my posts are always this long and no one reads down to the end, and therefore doesn't find out about the tape ideas. So since nobody is reading this: Tori and Jewel sound exactly alike, and they both stink. And oh yeah Tori could beat up Jewel in a fist fight because she's got extra inches on her. But Jewel could probably beat up Kate Moss. And everybody on this list is a jerk. <> Ken Winchenbach walden@bluefin.net "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: Joanne Elizabeth Matson Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 14:42:15 -0800 (PST) Subject: get out your Bic Hi guys Well, it's good to see that everyone has cooled off a little bit.
