Ouch Steve! I've only been on the list for about 2 months, and have kept low profile because of an extremely busy life at the moment (full time college and Registered Nurse, etc.) I must say though that this list has been invaluable to me. I absolutely love Jewel and her talent in this world of generic meaningless pop drivel. Having an inside connection like Hiranya is amazing. Already I have learned so much that I wouldn't have a clue about without the people of this list. I haven't sent off to Niele for Rare Angels yet, but am eager to. In advance, I strongly admire all that effort of taping for us. I hope I'll be able to tape a great show and be of use to the list someday also. I feel bad about the leaving of key founding members for whatever reason. I don't really care for 20 posts discussing Jewel's height, but I wade through, and still get blessed with amazing little things here and there, from Hiranya and many others. I wish we discussed relevant issues that Jewel brings up in her lyrics and poetry more often, leading each other to insights and thought out opinions from others that can help mold and enrich our own views on life. It's truly amazing to communicate so fast with people we've never met, and share with each other. I hope that continues to grow. I must mention an example. I drive a 1964 Land Rover 109. (rare, British, safari 4X4.) There is a list here in California, that consists of Land Rover owners, a truly eccentric bunch. In the 5 months I've ownd my Rover, they've become true friends, like family. We go on trips together, provide parts for one another, or just advice. We get together at a pub for beers, just to chat. When one of the list member's mom just died of a brain anyeurism, he kept us updated on the list, because we were like family. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A COMPLAINT ON THAT LIST OF ANY SORT, NOR A TRUE FLAME that really chews someone out. I don't quite understand the magic that makes that list work so well, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that we make efforts to meet one another in person, and so have some idea who the other person is on the other end of the line sometimes. I hope this list can have that sense of community and overcome"Human Habit." To those thinking of leaving....please don't. Voice your views, share your knowledge...some of us "newbies" really do value all you've done, even if we haven't had time to say so... Sorry this was so long, but I hope it's useful... I do it typically out of habit anyhow. Correct. The internet standards for mail state that there should be at least one blank line between the header information and the message body. Some people's software doesn't do this, so the first line sometimes gets interpreted as an address. - -Jeff ------------------------------ From: Raven Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 17:43:46 EST5EDT4,M4.1.0,M10.5.0 Subject: Re: YWMFM cd single I am the one who spoke of letting Jewel judge them. But I disagree about only the good writers getting a chance to win. I think that no matter how old or young someone is, or how much ability they possess, point-blank honesty comes out above every time. All the rest is just decoration and fluff to make something that we perceive as boring to be more interesting, and to make the uncomfortable presentable. With a little effort, one can work out the words to express that exact feeling that some of us find so hard to capture. And I would even be willing to help those that believe they are less capable writers. I don't mean this as an inflammatory remark, but if you are such a good writer, Arthur, then maybe you too could put aside your bias against those who would compete for the prize, and help the less literary inclined to express themselves adequately. If people got to know each other on a personal level not only would there be a stronger sense of respect for feelings, but a chance for friendships and relationships to come about and grow. A possible problem for these area get-togethers would be people like myself, who live in a small community that probably only contains a minimal amount of, if any, fellow list members. Perhaps someday a big jamboree could be organized. San Diego would be a good place since that's where Jewel's following all started but I realize that poses a problem for non-westcoast members. In an attempt to shed my title of "lurker" :) I would like to make a proposition: i have often compared several of Jewel's songs to determine what is my favorite. and while it IS possible to have more than one favorite song i think it can be narrowed to one if thought about for awhile. Anyway i thought it would be interesting to know what the general "Everyday Angel" consensus is. This would allow us to compare (not blast) interests concerning Jewel's WIDE range of styles. And therefore propose that we get together and tabulate the fav's. Of course this would create ALOT of one sentence letters that would undoubtably clutter this wonderful list. So as a solution, mail the responses to me (addresse below). at which point i will tabulate the numbers of 'votes' for each song and then proceed to post, in one letter, the results. DISCLAIMER: Please understand this is not an attempt to hourde (sp?) all the info and stalk those who respond.=*) To ensure that i am not getting responses in a year from now after having posted the results, 1)lets have the responses mailed by...Thursday, February 1st, 1996 Also since i will be recieving alot of responses (hopefully), lets keep the responses limited to just the name of the song with the subject being "favorite". Although i am interested in everybodies justification of their choice, reading everbody's would take forever. So if this seems like a good idea then post, TO ME (to avoid the clutter), *Your favorite song (no more) *With subject "favorite" and *post it by February 1st. I will add up the results and then post them as quickly as possible. I feel this will give us a greater understanding of eachother and Jewel's strengths. Perhaps even Jewel would like to hear of what it is we like to hear most when we attend hear concerts and add to her knowledge of her following. You can't expect people to treat someone as speaking gospel if they don't know them from Adam (or Eve). If you want everyone to recognize Hiranya for the info-source that she is, then you need to officially mention her status in the List's welcome message, or some other public organ. If Joe Blow told us that Jewel was having a lesbian affair with Tori, or if she was investing in Apple, or something, I'd have to consider the source when deciding whether to believe it. Doug dsbailey@ingr.com ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 23:11:23 -0500 (EST) Subject: Thoughts and apologies Greetings, As catalyst of the recent discussions on the state of the list, I feel I should come forward. First off, and obviously, I hadn't gotten around to sending in an unsubscribe message yet. So, I've been here, and I've seen all the discussion. (I'm sorry this is so long. Perhaps it's even too late in the discussion for a note of this nature. :/ ) AN APOLOGY I feel I owe people a bit of an apology. Not for (almost) leaving, or for the various discussions, but for my terse and unproductive post. I was extremely fed up at the time, and felt hopeless about the list. The ensuing discussion has contained a lot of great ideas, positive comments, and, clear, coherent thoughts, much of which has been absent from this list for a very long time. Neile, as is often the case, managed to state my point of view more eloquently and tactfully than I would have myself. Still, rather than slinking out in the night, it would have been more productive to actually have begun a (hopefully) intelligent exchange. For this, I apologize. WHO THE HELL ARE YOU ANYWAY? A legitimate question, actually. Amidst the flurry of joinings and posts starting around the time of the Wizard of Oz and increasing after almost every television appearance, many of the older members of the list became quieter and quieter. I certainly haven't been too much of a presence. Anyway, in amazingly timely good fortune, I lived in San Diego during Jewel's heyday at the Inner Change. In 1993 I saw her perform roughly 26 times, and have probably seen her a good 30 times since then. I was at 3 of the 4 recording sessions for the live portion of the album. This list was originally started and filled by people who heard about it on ecto (another mailing list). People were familiar with Jewel there because I, and later Jeff Hanson, babbled incessantly about her, even before she had a contract. Most of the early list members were turned on to Jewel from dubs of Inner Change shows one of us sent them. I resold, at a loss, about 10 copies of Shiva Diva Doo Wop around the globe to promote Jewel, and have probably distributed at least 40 tapes of shows. (Please don't ask me for any right now, ok?) When the list got bogged down by lots of repetitive questions, Jeff and I were asked to write the FAQ. SO WHAT? A fair question :) All of that is great, but irrelevant. This doesn't give me any claim to Jewel, the list, or any sort of position of importance. Just explains a little history that may be interesting to some. One reason I didn't complain when I left was because the list is not mine to steer or control, and my opinion about what should be on the list is no more relevant than anyone elses. THE UPSHOT I've learned a thing or two from the posts of this week. I'm glad to see there were people on the list willing to confront the issues that I chose to turn my back on. I'd like to see the list flourish, and if I do actually leave it in the future, I'd like to leave something that I was proud to have been a part of. It would be impossible to make this list look exactly like each individual wants it too. Everyone should try to add something positive to what is going on on the list, and be tolerant of the aspects of the list that aren't of interest to them. (That's tolerant, not non-critical.) There are a few things that seem most important in making the list work. FLAME-FREE The one thing that seems essential on the list is to make it an intelligent and courteous environment to be in. Many lists pride themselves in being a flame-free zone, and it would be nice if this list were one too. That doesn't mean people shouldn't express their opinions, or disagree with others opinions. It only means treat everyone and their ideas with respect. Many people have come to defend Hiranya from a recent antagonistic post. The point, which hasn't been made, is not that Hiranya is a person who provides reliable information directly from Jewel's mom (for which we are all gratefull... let me add my thanks to the chorus). If Hiranya were courteously disagreed with, that whole defensive thread wouldn't have been necessary. It was the rudeness of the response that prompted all the follow-up. That was an unnacceptable response for anyone's post, not just Hiranya's. POSTING ETIQUETTE A number of comments have been made about posting etiquette. Maybe they don't bear repeating, but... 1. Use personal e-mail for personal mail. 2. Include ONLY the relevant portions of a message, not the whole message. 3. Don't post your opinion about a fact that you don't know about. (Ex. Myriad incorrect or guessed at tv and concert appearances.) Feel free to ask questions though. I'm sorry to have rambled on for so long. I've seen a lot of encouraging signs this week and I hope to see them continue. Neal ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #28 **************************
