The Metro - Long Branch, NJ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: roninam@ix.netcom.com (Eric Montas ) Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 21:56:05 -0800 Subject: What a Night! The Metro - Long Branch, NJ my last. In fact, I'm also going to see her in NYC at Irving Plaza on Friday night. Yesterday, the 20th, was my birthday (I turned the big 22), and these are some great gifts: first Tori on SNL and now Jewel two times in one week! What more can a guy ask for? She exactly how everyone has described her in concert. I really loved the stories between and before songs, and her voice in person is just indescribable. She's even more beautiful than pictures portray her, and I was totally in awe at guitar playing. And of course, hearing her yodel for the first just blew me away. Now, for the faux pas of the day. As she neared the end of her hour, she asked for requests for the second time of the show. I requested at the top of my lungs my favorite song, "'Foolish Dreams!'" "'Foolish Dreams'?" she said. "Funny, I haven't written that one yet. You mean 'Foolish GAMES.'" And she smiled at me. Good thing I didn't have a mirror in front of me at that moment, because I knew I was bright red. I don't know why I said that. But she went on and sang it, and I just smiled the whole time as I absorbed every note and word. I really loved how she made eye contact with everyone the whole show. It was a really small bar (Edwin even played solo, but I didn't stick around for him...more on that later), but the intimate setting made for a very personal show, which was the whole mystique of it. She made eye contact with me so many times, I could have sworn she was singing to me. Well, once her set was done, I wandered about the bar and listened to a minute of Edwin's first song, but I decided I was too tired and had better head home. I was hoping to see Jewel come back into the bar to sign autographs, but decided I could always do it in NYC. Well, after walking past the tour bus, I look around and see Jewel walking around the corner from the front of the bar up towards the bus. Yes! I and other fans gathered around her. We all talked and she signed autographs. She asked us our names to make it even more personal. Wow. We (about 6 or 7 of us) talked for about a good 15+ minutes in the cold. She was such a sport about it. Finally, someone from the bus said that she had to get going. Well, I shook her hand and told her that I would see her in NY. She said, "Ok, I'll see you then, Eric." And then she walked off. But, what amazed me was that she remembered my name from when she signed my CD booklet. Whoa! (like Joey Lawrence). Well, I drove the hour home with a warm, happy feeling. I definitely can't wait for Friday at Irving Plaza. I think I'll bring her a gift for being so nice tonight. eric :) ------------------------------ From: roninam@ix.netcom.com (Eric Montas ) Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 22:00:40 -0800 Subject: Irving Plaza Jan 26th - Who's Going? concert. I've never been there so I don't know of any significant landmarks, but if people from the list want to meet, I'll plan what I'll wear and you can hunt me down. Let's see...hmm...ok, I'll wear this RED t-shirt I got from a Belly concert. So, look out for a Filipino-looking guy, about 5'8", 130lbs, with long black hair wearing a RED Belly t-shirt. I shouldn't be too hard to miss. And when I say long hair, it's at about the middle of my back. So, a guy in red shirt with long black hair. That's about it. I hope to see you there! First, Jewel is scheduled to play in Chicago on Feb 9. Is she opening for E. McCain? Secondly, according to Ticketmaster on-line on AOL, Jewel will be doing a concert at the Rosemont Horizon on March 24? I really doubt this, considering that the Rosemont Horizon is an absolutely enormous stadium, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Thanks! Anyone else heard it lately, or heard that she doesn't know it?? <> Ken Winchenbach walden@bluefin.net "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 09:12:36 +0000 Subject: Everyday Angels Services mailing list could provide for its members. We've had a lot of squabbles on here lately, and I think a way to remedy that would be to have the group doing some stuff. Here are some ideas, some original, some based on other mailing lists. 1) Tape Trees, tape trees, tape trees. One of the best things about a mailing list are the tape trees you can run, knowing that only real fans are getting the tapes, and knowing that nearly everybody on the list will have the same tape. Just like Rare Angels has expanded our discussion to include new songs, having a history of tape trees will allow the whole list to have concerts to discuss. It lends a sense of community, and a sense of Jewel History. I am currently arranging to run a tree within a few days with someone else on the list, and I'd like to arrange for a schedule of other tape trees in the future if we can find more volunteers. 2) Adopt A Newbie. Another good way I've seen to get concert tapes to the masses, is for those of us with tapes to adopt those without. We can run a thing where all the Angels with concert tapes are assigned a newbie with no tapes, and they make a couple tapes for them, for blanks and postage. Of course this requires the volunteering of those members of the list with tapes, but I think it's another great way to build community in the list. All this requires is that everyone who has tapes send in as givers, and then those who want tapes to send in as newbies, and someone in the middle to match them up. 3) Concert Database. This I think is a really great idea, especially on a list for Jewel an up and coming artist. On the Neil Young mailing list they are working on a database of all his concerts and the setlists for each one. And that is going back thirty years. We should take advantage of the fact that Jewel has only been playing for years in the single digits. We could start a database listing all the concerts she plays from now on, the setlist if one of the Angels knows it, and any other notes about the concerts: new songs, amusing talk, incidents. And we can attempt to go backwards and document as many of her past concerts as we can. And we could have Hiryana confirm that Jewel did play all the shows we list, right? This will be easy to upkeep once we get going, and it will be a great thing to have years in the future. All this would take is someone to start up a database for this information, and enter it in whenever we know that Jewel played a concert, and request info from people who went to it. 4) Angels With Concerts. Similarly we can make a database of all the members of Everyday Angels with concert tapes, and what concerts they have. This would only include people willing to disclose their lists, and hopefully people willing to trade with others. That way we would all be able to find who has the tape we really want, or who has the tape that will answer our questions, or add to our discussion. All this takes is everyone to send in their list, and someone to enter it into the computer. These are just a few ideas that I had. I would be willing to do any of these things, or if someone else would like to volunteer for some, that would be great. They all require the help of many people on the list. Does anyone out there think any of these are good ideas? I am already starting on the tape tree idea, and I am really fired up about the concert database idea. I'll start that if Hiryana and the others want to help. These databases could then be added to some of the Jewel web pages possibly. I don't have a web page yet, but maybe I could do that in the future. Or maybe some of the other web page holders would like to volunteer in that way. What does everyone think?
