I'm kinda new to the Jewel Mailing list. Up untill last night, all that I had ever heard of Jewel was "Who Will Save Your Souls." But, when I saw her at the Edwin McCain concert last night, I fell in love with the sound coming off of the stage. It was an unreal concert. I'll start at the begining. I was there to tape Edwin's show. But, I thought that it might be neat to tape the opening act as well. I just knew that she was a one-person, female, acoustic show. It sounded very interesting to me. So, I found Jewel's road manager and asked him for permission to tape the show. He gave me a no-go. However he was very polite and thanked me for asking first. Dissapointed, I turned around and immediately bumped right into Jewel herself. Whoops... (I'm kinda clumsy.) So, I was just about to move up to the front of the hall so that I could get a good look at the concert, and a young woman came up to the soundboard and tried to give the house sound guy a tape to tape Jewel's set. He just pointed at me. So, the woman (Kate) said that she just asked Jewel and SHE said that she could tape it. So, I made my way back to her, and she gave me the okay! Then she leaned over to the woman next to her and said something like "Man! These Bootleggers are everywhere!" Anyway... I was pumped. Then she just hopped up on stage. Setlist. 1.18.96 Flamingo's Knoxville, TN (This maybe wrong... Maybe Kate will post a revised version ) Pieces of You Little Sister She Cries The Morning Song Do You Wanna Catch a Cold Sometimes That Be The Way Very Big Girl Foolish Games Angel Standing By Kiss Your Ass Walkaway Who Will Save Your Souls Chime Bills The set was awesome! She had the whole place laughing with her commentary. Especially her imitation of the Cranberries during Pieces Of You. Gosh... I was just blown away by her music. This had everything that I had ever wanted in an acoustic set. Humor, a Polka, a Big Band song, parodies, and YODELING! Who could ask for more? Also, at one point, she said something like "A Bootlegger just asked me for permission to tape the show, just as if I had any control over it... well lets give him a good one!" I was excited... And her set was exactally 50min! It fit perfectly on one side of my tape. PERFECT! Anyway.... One of these days, I'll tree the show... please... just give me some time.... thanks, and peace... mike miller - -- _____________ |Mike Miller (a.k.a. I sat and listened (okay, i stood in this crowded Coffee House) and listened. She entertained, and she laughed and smiled. People played chess around her, and she incorporated them into her song of "I'm Sensitive" when she was done, she showed everyone her Tip jar (bucket) and was selling a tape of two unreleased songs, and was selling a t-shirt. I got to talk to her, actually talk to her, for over an hour. We sat and talked, and she tried to teach me to yodel that night, but unfortunately, i think i had a case of strep throat or some stupid thing going around, and could not do it, but we still talked and talked, and she had the same chlid like mentality that is so perfect for her... I wish you all could see her in a coffee house, where you can actually feel so close to her... no body guards, no bouncers, just her, and the audience... her in all her glory. I never got the chance to see her again, which is why i am looking forward to this next week. It was really great to see her live and Andy Laken wrote "Does anyone know who edwon mccain is and what kind of music he does?" I guess i'll bite on this one... I was very impressed with The Edwin McCain band. Although they were a little louder than they whould have been, as was Jewel. I don't know who's fault that was... maybe the engineers at Trax... But i would classify the group as something like Dave Matthews. For people who have heard "solitude" they are not quite that quiet or slow...McCain who turned 26 this morning and we and Jewel sang Happy Birthday to him at midnite is a good singer and guitarist. He sings with a lot of emotion and his own distinctive style that i can't quite place. Sometimes reminiscent of Eddie Vedder as he looks the sky as he hits the loud, long notes. Someone here compared Edwin McCain band to The Black Crowes. That i can definitely see. They both have roots in the southern blues and a somewhat country sound but, of course louder. They played a long set and then Edwin came out to play an Indigo Girls song by himself. The song was Romeo and Juliet. It was really nice...The guitar could have been played by Jewel on that song. It almost sounded like it was her. The set was probably too long but maybe We shouldn't have been standing from 9:00 till 1:30 when McCain left the stage. As far as Jewel goes, I think she played about 12 or so songs... She was out there for an hour. She did a lot of talking and joking with the audience. She started with Pieces of You. She stopped the song almost ten times to tell a little story as she played this song... She said she dreams of one day playing a really big stadium and getting a mosh pit going in the middle. She also played: Foolish Games, Morning song, painters, sensitvie, Near You Always, and Daddy. The story for Daddy was interesting. It's about when she was a kid watching the Jeffersons at a friends house. The parents of her friends didn't want their children watching black people on tv. She couldn't believe what parents teach their kids and how the kids are a reflection of their parents... That's what Daddy is about. She also played some songs i've never heard: Flower, Kiss your Ass, a song that was lyrically similar to Morning... About staying home called "let's get sick together" or something... Then she ended with "Who will Save your soul" It was great to see her in a small group of about 200 or so That's about all Jake ------------------------------ From: Kilgore Trout Date: Sat, 20 Jan 1996 13:48:13 -0800 Subject: . . . please . . .
