Date sent: 16-JAN-1996 01:47:34 Hello everybody...Something wierd happened to me today that I must share with you. I went to my local "cd-exchange" store and saw a bin of cd's for 50cents each, so of course I searched through it. Well, I found a Jewel promo entitled "Who Will Save Your Soul". Without thinking that I already own one called this, I bought it. When I opened it up, it contained not only the song "WWSYS", but also a 16:44 minute interview of Jewel and Mike Halloran (of 91X San Diego). I looked through the discography and the FAQ, yet didn't find it listed. Are there more out there???? This is not the promo with "WWSYS" and "I'm Sensitive" on it(I have that one, too though). Just wondering... I've concluded her vocal and song- writing abilites are on a par with Sarah McLachlan's, and the voice alone is definitely superior to Tori's. She asked for requests after the 2nd song, and I called out "Yellow Brick Road", but she didn't hear me (sigh). I was hoping for a smile from her or something... I finally got to hear "My Own Private God's Gift To Women", and it's marvelous! She's got a helluvan attitude, and it shows in that song. The "perfect 'Grab me' size" indeed! :-) We left before Ed McCain came on, so we ended up paying $10 each just to see Jewel, but even that was a bargain. Oh, if you're ever in Nashville, get the Buffalo Wings at Mulligan's Pub, on 2nd Street! Best I've ever had... I have this one listed on my lyrics page (which is really becoming more of a discography page as of late) at http://www.cs.mun.ca/~colins/jewel_lyrics.html. I sent a message a few weeks ago mentioning that it should be added to the FAQ although I'm not sure if Neal or Jeff read it. First time I've actually seen Jewel aside from her WWSYS video. Did anyone notice that the arrangement of You Were Meant For Me she played on the show was different from the recording? They didn't play the "dreams last so long/even after you're gone" part of the chorus. Sounded really weird to me. One cool note: I just bought a really nice new guitar yesterday (after 13 years with a lousy one.) I was strumming it as a waited for her to come on the show. Imagine my pride when I saw that the guy playing the acoustic in her band was playing the same brand (Taylor.) If anyone is looking for a beautiful playing and sounding guitar, I think you can't go wrong with one of these. Now if I could only learn to play as well as Jewel ;-) ------------------------------ From: Katie McCurry Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 13:17:45 -0500 (EST) Subject: Chat. Show WOW it was My first live jewel show. It was Great!!!!!!! I had so much fun!! I was right up front & i got to sit down, relax, & just enjoy her music! I thought it was rather funny how she acted towards talkers in the audience- but i was glad to see it. She told this one group- um..it's ok if you all want to talk... but go to the back... - then she got a round of applause. Before she played Angel Standing By- she told us that we had permission to elbow anyone that talked in the teeth. it was pretty funny. She told the Pot story... Very funny!! I requested 'Nicotine Love' & she asked me,"How do you know that song?" w/ a pretty confused face- I just said rare angels.-- Anyway- at first she didn't want to play it b/c she thought the crowd wouldn't like it- but it seemed to be one of there favorites!! I'm glad I asked. She played for only an hour :( she kept looking at her watch): But she was very talkative w\ the crowd. After the show- I got to meet her- YAY & I got her Autograph. I get to see her in Knoxville too, so I'm pretty happy. Sorry to ramble- It was a long night. See y'all later! Love,Katie P.s.- i forgot to say that she thought the South was beautiful- she said she didn't think anything was as beautiful as Alaska-- Maybe she'll come down here more often!!! They both have pretty cool pictures of Jewel, so go buy the mags, really, I mean it! (there I have assuaged my guilt at such a tawdry violation of copyright law). I suppose Steve and Colin could put these at the web site toooo. The picture in Sassy has Jewel in a nice bluish outfit looking, well exactly like my friend Cheryl, and nearly wholly un-Jewel-like. Jewel is holding a nice little gazing into our eyes like... like... there is some guy from a magazine taking her picture. The Us article has Jewel in a happy silver ski suit and cool, wild, furry boots, again looking very un-Jewel-like, but not at all like my friend Cheryl and entirely like she might just want nip off to do a gig with the Smashing Pumpkins. Jewel is looking down off into the fake snowy distance, like the photographer was looking at a lot of Dorothea Lange pictures and thinking "um, no." In anycase, this is my wildly apocryphal way of saying, here are the two articles. I'm with Steve Ito, I'm bummed that Toronto has seemingly up and disappeared from the current tour schedule. Oh well. She'll be back, I'm sure: maybe March would be apropos, to write another Cold Song :-) Regards, James. - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Sassy, Feb. 1996, p. 37 Eye On: JEWEL KILCHER Age: 21 Hometown: Homer, Alaska. "My grandfather moved to Alaska before it was a state - he was one of the first settlers." Although the family homestead was remote and luxuries were limited, "I knew who Cyndi Lauper was, I knew what blue eyeliner was!" Record: Pieces of You - an impressive, poetic, stark and startling take on the girl-with-guitar thing. How She Got Started: Her parents were a musical duo and Jewel would sing with them. After graduating from a performing arts high school, Jewel moved into her car and travelled around, playing coffeehouses. "I couldn't face consciousness doing something I hated." On tour nowdays, "I manage to hold 20,000 people's attention between Everclear and the Ramones." Most Famous Fan: Sean Penn, who digs her so much he directed the video for Jewel's second single "You Were Meant for Me." He saw me perform on Conan O'Brien and called me up to ask r his movie The Crossing Guard." As to Penn's directing prowess, she says: "He's very kind, professional and efficient, and the shots were beautiful." How She Stays Grounded: "I don't adore 'the biz' and I'm terrified of decadence, so I surround myself with what I know is real. I travel with things that remind me of home, like rocks and eagle feathers, and always remember to be joyful and thankful." Most Unusual Skill: Yodelling. "My father is Swiss - so I guess it's in my blood. When I was in third grade I got kicked out of class for yodelling." She's also an avid surfer: "I'm a long boarder; I'm not great but I can do a bottom turn." - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Us, Jan. 1996, p. 31 Hot Zone If anyone knows a thing or two about dressing for winter weather, it's JEWEL KILCHER, who has grabbed attention with her folksy debut album, Pieces of You. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter grew up on 800 acres near Homer, Alaska, driving a tractor in temperatures so cold "you woke up with frost on your eyes" and getting to gigs by dog sled. Because, money was tight, clothes were often secondhand, and she remembers one loathsome outfit in particular. "Everyone else had these brand-new pink and purple snowsuits, and I had to wear a black one with white piping and 'Jimmy Robertson' written in marker down the sleeve. It was so embarassing," says Jewel, who has recently been linked with Sean Penn ("We're friends," she insists, adding that they met when he asked her to write a song for his movie The Crossing Guard). But thanks to the current rage for sleek, ski-inspired looks, Jewel's new choices in winter wear are loads more stylish than anything she had growing up. Jewel is wearing Ralph Lauren Sport. Boots available at the Scandinavian Ski Shop. - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ From: Truna@aol.com Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 16:52:45 -0500 Subject: Re: wowwwww Oh my gosh, Jewel was sooooo great, I was staying up till 1:30 to here the song and the non existent interview!
