Personally, I think the album is too long. At first I had it on one side of a 45-min tape a friend gave me, and liked it so much that I bought the CD to get the full length. But upon repeated listening I feel a little editing near would have strengthened the album. I find "Daddy" preachy in its lyrics and monotonous musically. "Don't", "Amen", and "Angel" are OK songs, but I don't think they are up to the standard of some of the songs earlier in the record. This impression may be colored by the fact that all three are pretty subdued; maybe a different track sequence would leaven things a bit. ALSO (repeating my earlier request) Does anyone have or know of chords to any jewel songs, either posted here previously or elsewhere on the net? I may figure out some songs and post them on my own in OLGA. - - Andy - ----------------------------- Espresso - - Nectar of the gods - ----------------------------- ------------------------------ From: alaken@magnet.com (Andy Laken) Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 10:45:14 -0500 Subject: re: Faeries It's "pedestal" - - Andy - ----------------------------- Espresso - - Nectar of the gods - ----------------------------- ------------------------------ From: Joanne Elizabeth Matson Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 09:12:06 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: PofY too short? + Chords? Hi guys Hey Andy, please don't take this personally, but how can you possibly think PofY is too short??? As for not liking those songs, I can't even comprehend it. IMHO, "Don't" is the best one on the album. And Jewel's favorite is "Amen". I think that the album is perfect just the way it is. I would like it to be even longer, but I think that's the point :) -Joanne ------------------------------ From: "SEGAL,CRAIG JOSEPH,MR" Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 11:44:33 EST Subject: (*^(*^**GG!!!! Hello! I've been on the list for quite sometime now and I'm pretty disturbed by the childish fighting that continues from day to day. If people want to compare Tori and Jewel-do so. If others don't want ot-don't. But----people shouldn't be afraid to post their opinions to the list. If everybody is nervous about offending somebody than everyone will lose interest in the list. We all like Jewel, but we should stop ourselves from obsessing over comments that diverge from simply praising Jewel's work. The list should be an honest one rather than a pretentious one that limits conversation to "Jewel's the greatest and anyone who disagrees should bite me". I'm sure Jewel is pleased with the support of her fans, but I also would think that she would be quite upset with the obsessive way in which we manage the list. Anybody who agrees please say so... thanks, Adam brtk@musicb.mcgill.ca ------------------------------ From: alaken@magnet.com (Andy Laken) Date: Mon, 15 Jan 1996 12:50:05 -0500 Subject: Re: PofY too short? + Chords? >Hi guys >Hey Andy, please don't take this personally, but how can you possibly >think PofY is too short??? Nick & Eric's has God Lives Underwater on the 14th. They show no signs at all for McCain nor Jewel upto and including March. Gads, and here I was looking forward to seeing her. I'd like to go, and I wonder if anyone is interested in carpooling, or otherwise getting together to go down. I live in Exeter, NH, and if anyone lives north of me, they could stop at my house and we could go down. Or if someone lives south of me I could stop there and we could hook up for the trip. I don't really like driving into Boston, so I'm hoping that someone else who knows their way around better will be interested. But even if you don't know your way around, we could still hang out before we go in, it'd be great to have a Jewel gathering. I take it from the radio ads I've heard that Edward McCain is the main act of the show. Does anyone have an idea as to how long Jewel will be playing? Can we expect a long set? A CD only holds > about 78 minutes of music or something like that. And POY is one of the Well, I know I'm being anal, but since her album is not even close to 78 minutes long, don't you think that this is an unlikely explanation? Seriously though, several possible reasons immediately come to mind, and I'm sure there are others... Studio time costs big bucks, as does hiring backup musicians, etc. etc. Usually you don't see really long CDs except for bootlegs (which involve no studio time, and compilations/greatest hits CDs which consist mainly of stuff that has already been recorded. So why spend tons more money recording more songs than you need when they aren't going to result in correspondingly increasing sales? Once you reach the point of diminishing returns, it doesn't make sense. Some of those songs Jewel hadn't written yet. She's written a LOT of songs since the album was recorded in what, July '94? It means they are available for future albums/singles. They didn't really fit in with the concept of the album. She could have put "God's Gift to Women" or "Race Car Driver" on the album, but I recall her saying she didn't want to be perceived as a lightweight who didn't take things seriously, at least for her debut disc. The yodelling song is another... she didn't want to be known as "the girl who yodels". Which has only been partially successful, ironically. Finally, I do think that an album can be too long, just as a song can be too long, a movie can be too long, a book can be too long. I don't see an album as just a collection of songs, an album is a piece of work in itself, and the way the songs fit together, the way they are arranged on an album, is important to the integrity of the album as a work of art in itself. I don't get to do this as often as I like, but I do enjoy listening to an entire album all at once in one sitting. Maybe she feels the same way, or her producers do, or they simply recognize that there are many fans who think this way. Anyway, those are some possible reasons why many of her songs weren't included on the album. I can't believe I sat down and typed all that out. I must really want to procrastinate. - -------------- And I finally looked at the tour dates on Colin's web site a couple of days ago... can it be true? Can the world be so cruel? I guess it can, because Toronto has been struck from the list of tour dates... which is a shame, because Toronto has been mad over Jewel since March, and Jewel has always said she loves Toronto. I can't believe Jewel's been on the road virtually non-stop since what, November '94? And I haven't seen her since July...
